The bodies of around 1,500 Hamas fighters have been found inside Israeli territory since the fighting began on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces said. In a briefing Tuesday morning, Richard Hecht, a spokesman for the IDF, said Israel had nearly finished evacuating all Israeli towns on the border with Gaza as the military makes preparations for a ground offensive in the Palestinian enclave ruled by Hamas. Hecht said there was no order for an invasion as yet, but that "we are building infrastructure for future operations."

CNN —More than 100 bodies have been found in the Israeli kibbutz Be’eri, as details gradually emerge of the horror that unfolded as Palestinian Hamas militants launched their deadly surprise attack. Civilians were killed and taken hostage, according to Israeli authorities and videos obtained and authenticated by CNN. Footage shows militants pulling three bodies out of a car, before stealing the vehicle and driving north. Another video shows armed militants taking five Israeli civilians captive, with the bodies of four later seen lying on the ground nearby in another video verified by CNN. Of the 107 bodies discovered in the aftermath, most were of local residents of the kibbutz, though some were of Israeli security forces, a search and rescue spokesperson told CNN.

Israel has pledged that Hamas will pay a heavy price and may now be preparing a ground incursion into Gaza. Hamas’s attacks are also being ascribed to an intelligence failure, just as 9/11 was. But this is a fundamental misunderstanding of the 9/11 attacks, which were not so much an intelligence failure as a policy failure. Intelligence distributed to officials in the George W. Bush administration included warnings entitled, “Bin Ladin Planning High Profile Attacks,” “Bin Ladin Attacks May Be Imminent,” and “Planning for Bin Ladin Attacks Continues, Despite Delay.” (“Bin Ladin” was the spelling used by the US government at the time.) Certainly, the Hamas attacks in Israel were a surprise, just as 9/11 was, but it is premature to label it an intelligence failure. Right now, we have no idea if there were signals amid the “noise” coming into Israeli intelligence about a likely Hamas attack.

A day that began with air raid sirens blaring out in the early morning had by lunchtime turned into one of the most terrifying attacks Israel has known in the 75 years of its existence. Though Israel is no stranger to terrorist attacks, Saturday’s assault was unprecedented – not least because of the lack of warning. Since Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, it has spent billions of dollars securing the border from attacks. To stop rocket attacks, Israel has used the Iron Dome, an effective rocket defense system developed with help from the United States. The Israel Defense Forces have already begun airstrikes in Gaza targeting Hamas infrastructure, resulting in hundreds of dead and injured.

The capability of Hamas to coordinate terrorist attacks on Israeli towns without detection has raised concerns about technological blind spots for US intelligence officials, a senior US intelligence official told CNN. But there was no tactical-level intelligence that alerted US officials that an attack of this size would happen on this day. US intelligence officials are focused on understanding the secure communications and training used for the attacks and whether that knowledge is being shared with other groups elsewhere. Speaking publicly Saturday, Israeli officials acknowledged they were caught by surprise at Saturday’s air assault. “I assume the intelligence question will be talked about down the road and we’ll learn what happened there,” he told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.

The microwave-size device called MOXIE, or Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, is on the Perseverance rover. The experiment kicked off more than two years ago, a few months after the rover landed on Mars. The instrument works by converting some of Mars’ plentiful carbon dioxide into oxygen. MOXIE works by dividing up carbon dioxide molecules, which include one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. Lessons learned from the small MOXIE experiment can now be used to create a full-scale system that includes an oxygen generator that can also liquefy and store the oxygen.

I loved the pair of Gwendoline Riley novels NYRB put out last year, “My Phantoms” and “First Love.” I enjoy reading about awful, sickening people, and these books are filled with them. But they’re awful and sickening in a way that, while not unfamiliar to my life experience, felt new — they’re awful and sickening in a way I’d not seen in literature before. Can a great book be badly written? I bought a book called “The Loser,” by William Hoffman Jr., based on its incredible cover (Funk & Wagnalls hardcover edition circa 1968).

NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters) - Shares of SoFi Technologies Inc (SOFI.O) rose by more than 22% on Monday, hitting highest level in more than a year, after the financial services provider reported second quarter results that beat analyst expectations. That result exceeded the average analyst estimate of $476.2 million and $261.3 million for SoFi's revenue and NII, according to Refinitiv data. SoFi's shares rose as high as $11.70, the highest level since March last year, before closing at $11.45 on Monday - a nearly 20% gain from the previous session. "(Second quarter) results beat expectations and were largely positive with continued rapid member and deposit growth," Jefferies analysts, led by John Hecht, said in an investor note. "We highlight that results were more from net interest income and less from fair value marks relative to our forecast, which represents recurring revenues," the analysts added.

While I utilize several productivity tools I love, the one I've tried that was the most epic fail was to be a morning person. Knowing this would sabotage my morning, I'd fight the wave of energetic flow to try to get to bed early to start the cycle again.
