CNN —The Israeli military announced Friday that it has recovered the bodies of three hostages from a tunnel in the Gaza Strip. The hostages were identified as Shani Louk, Amit Bouskila, and Itshak Gelernter, IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a press conference in Tel Aviv. All three were killed while escaping the Nova music festival and their bodies taken into Gaza, he said. “They were celebrating life in the Nova music festival and they were murdered by Hamas,” he said. The IDF believed that of those 132 hostages, 40 are believed to be dead, including two who were taken in 2014.

As the war in Gaza reaches its six-month mark, I’m getting a disturbing sense of déjà vu. Israel is facing many of the same challenges that America faced in Iraq, and it is making many of the same mistakes. The terrible civilian toll and looming famine in Gaza are a human tragedy that should grieve us all; they are also directly relevant to the outcome of the war. A modern army like Israel’s can absolutely defeat Hamas in a direct confrontation, regardless of whether it provides aid to civilians. But as we’ve learned in our own wars abroad, it cannot preserve its victory unless it meets Gazans’ most basic needs.

CNN —Russia on Sunday held a day of mourning after at least 137 people were killed in an attack on a concert venue in Moscow, the country’s worst attack in two decades. As the only grandchild, our kiddo was surrounded by a large, extended family of people who showered them with affection and support. However, in 2020, when our teenager came out as queer and nonbinary, they experienced a painful wake-up call: Their grandparents' love was not as unconditional as we'd hoped. Our kid is excited to step out into the world, knowing it won't always tolerate them, but assured that there is a support system at home. I wish their grandparents would allow themselves to be part of this support system, but we respect the choice to be absent.

Sydney, Australia CNN —The alleged murder of a young Sydney couple by a serving police officer has opened a tragic new chapter in the troubled history between the force and the city’s LGBT+ community and cast a shadow over Mardi Gras, a vibrant annual celebration of their culture. The bodies of Sydney couple Luke Davies and Jesse Baird were found a week after their alleged murder. Adding to that distress was a photo circulated widely of the alleged killer marching in police uniform at the 2020 Mardi Gras. The couple's alleged murder has cast a shadow over the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. Recommendations to police included reinvestigating some of the suspected hate crimes murders, but also for officers to take courses in LGBT+ bias and to improve relations with the LGBT+ community.
