LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jordan Spieth signed for the wrong score on Friday at the Genesis Invitational and was disqualified for the first time in the 263 tournaments he has played on the PGA Tour. Spieth was within three shots of the lead at the turn in the second round at Riviera until he dropped three shots as Patrick Cantlay, playing in his group, began to pull away. Spieth made bogey on the 18th hole for a 73, leaving him 10 shots behind. Spieth had missed the green to the left, chipped to about 4 feet and lipped out. That leaves 51 players in the field for the weekend at Riviera.

CNN —Tiger Woods has withdrawn from The Genesis Invitational in the second round due to illness, the PGA Tour announced Friday. The 15-time major champion was 1-over through six holes before exiting the course on a golf cart during Friday’s second round and 2-over par for the whole tournament. He returned to the tournament scene for The Genesis Invitational, an event he hosts in Southern California. Woods acknowledged he was dealing with back spasms for the final three holes of his opening round on Thursday. The Genesis Invitational continues through Sunday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tiger Woods returned to the PGA Tour and lasted only 24 holes, withdrawing Friday at the Genesis Invitational after hitting his tee shot on the seventh hole. PGA Tour rules official Mark Dusbabek said on the telecast that Woods had an illness, and that it was not related to his ankle or back. Wood was 1-over par for the round and projected just outside the cut when he asked for a cart and was driven off the course by a rules official. Woods had not played an official event since the Masters last April, withdrawing in the middle of the third round of the rain-delayed major. Woods had said he hoped to play one tournament a month through the major season.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Patrick Cantlay began with an eagle and never let anyone close to him the rest of the round Friday. He shot a 6-under 65 to build a five-shot lead at the Genesis Invitational going into a weekend that won't include Tiger Woods. Woods made another early exit, this one because of flu symptoms instead of his injured body. Cantlay was making it tougher on the field with every birdie. The cut was at 1-over 143, eliminating Pebble Beach winner Wyndham Clark and Justin Thomas.

CNN —The genesis of photographer Joy Gregory’s latest project, “Shining Lights,” began 40 years ago, at a Valentine’s Day party in London. After the party and as they became friends, Mercer suggested the pair collaborate on a book about women’s photography. Courtesy the artist/MACKThe idea then, for a book surveying the work of Black women’s photography in Britain in the 1980s and 1990s, lay dormant for several decades. The result is “Shining Lights: Black Women Photographers in 1980s–90s Britain,” a new photography book edited by Gregory and co-published by Autograph and Mack. “I think as women, it wasn’t open, and I think being of color, it definitely wasn’t open.”In the book, Black “refers to the whole gamut of color, which was really about difference,” says Gregory.

Woods said his back began to spasm over the final few holes in the Genesis Invitational at Riviera. The shot called for the same club he had just shanked — 8-iron — for a low punch between the trees. “I had a small window there and tried to hit a punch-hook 8-iron after I just shanked an 8-iron," he said. Woods managed five birdies on a pristine day at Riviera, with mostly sunshine and a strong breeze late in the afternoon. A shank is rare, especially for Woods, but it has been a while since he mentioned back spasms.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thousands of fans watching Tiger Woods in his 2024 debut missed out on the best golf Thursday at the Genesis Invitational. In the group ahead of Woods was Patrick Cantlay, looking as though he wants to be the next Southern California native to win at Riviera. Cantlay opened with three birdies in four holes and never really slowed until a sycamore tree halted his great run. “Jordan and I were a bunch under on the front nine and a day where I putted really, really well. That shank was a shocker, and perhaps more concerning was Woods saying his back was acting up int the final hour, leading to the shank.

There's an ideological gap widening between Gen Z's young men and women. Half of young men also believe they face some kind of discrimination, and less than half identify as feminists. Sharing the data, journalist and lawyer Imani Gandy commented on the pattern, saying: "YouTube algorithms are turning young men into sociopaths."
