Oil prices eased on Thursday as concerns over weak demand in China, the world's largest crude importer, and expectations of a nearing ceasefire deal in the Middle East overcame gains in the previous session after draws in U.S. inventories. Oil prices eased on Thursday as concerns over weak demand in China, the world's largest crude importer, and expectations of a nearing ceasefire deal in the Middle East overcame gains in the previous session after draws in U.S. inventories. Brent crude futures for September fell 38 cents, or 0.5%, to $81.33 a barrel by 0129 GMT. This year, China's oil imports and refinery runs have trended lower than in 2023 on lower fuel demand amid sluggish economic growth, according to government data. "If Middle East ceasefire talks progresses, U.S. equities continue to slide, and China's economy remains sluggish, oil prices could fall to early June levels," said Satoru Yoshida, a commodity analyst with Rakuten Securities.

New York CNN —Gas prices have spiked in and around Chicago after a tornado sidelined a major ExxonMobil oil refinery last week. A gallon of gas in Chicago is now selling for an average of $4.34, according to AAA. That’s 27 cents more expensive than just a week ago after a tornado narrowly missed the Joliet Refinery and knocked power out to the Channahon, Illinois, facility. Gas prices have also jumped in nearby Michigan, another battleground state in the upcoming presidential election. “It will increase supply and lower prices,” Lipow said.

Oil prices rise as U.S. crude and fuel inventories seen shrinking

Falling U.S. crude inventories caused oil prices to rebound on Wednesday after several days of decline, while expectations for a nearing ceasefire deal in the Middle East kept prices from continuing to climb. U.S. crude oil, gasoline and distillate inventories fell last week, according to market sources citing the American Petroleum Institute, a trade organization. Gasoline inventories fell by 2.8 million barrels and distillates shed 1.5 million barrels. That would be the first time crude stocks in the United States fell for four weeks in a row since September 2023. Prices also suffered on continued concern that economic softening in China, which is the world's biggest crude importer, would weaken global oil demand.

An oil pump jack is shown in a field in Stanton, Texas, on June 27, 2024. U.S. crude oil futures rebounded more than 1% Wednesday, breaking a three-day losing streak as an industry report pointed to falling U.S. crude inventories and as wildfires in Canada raise the risk of supply disruptions. The American Petroleum Institute reported that U.S. crude oil stocks fell by 3.86 million barrels for the week ended July 19, according to reports. It is the fourth consecutive week of inventory declines. U.S. crude oil fell nearly 2% on Tuesday, the third consecutive day of losses, amid renewed hopes that Gaza cease-fire negotiations could de-escalate Middle East tensions, and as gasoline demand in the U.S. has largely disappointed so far this summer.

And, fittingly, in the first full year of his reign, the British monarchy introduced a slew of measures to tackle its rising carbon emissions. The King’s two Bentleys will also be modified within the next year to run on biofuel, according to Britain’s PA Media. The Royal Household aims to transition to an “almost fully electric” fleet of vehicles eventually, the accounts said, without providing a target date. Whether biofuels used for vehicles reduce carbon emissions is contentious and depends on many factors, including their source. Crown Estate profits soared in the 2023-24 financial year to a record £1.1 billion ($1.4 billion), boosted by revenue from offshore wind projects.

New York CNN —Shares of Ford fell more than 11% in after-hours trading Wednesday after the automaker reported much weaker than expected earnings. The company said it was compelled to set aside more money to cover the cost of repairing customers’ vehicles. That badly missed analysts’ forecasts of earnings per share of 68 cents a share. It was the nearly 50% drop in operating profit in Ford Blue, which includes traditional gasoline-powered cars and truck sales to consumers, that hurt its bottom line. Ford Pro, which includes fleet sales to businesses and governments, reported a modest gain in operating profits.

Oil prices drop to lowest levels in more than a month

Crude oil futures on Tuesday dropped to the lowest level in more than a month, as the market has largely ignored recent tit-for-tat strikes between Israel and Houthi militants in Yemen. Israel responded with airstrikes against Houthi targets near the Al Hudaydah Port in Yemen over the weekend, hitting oil facilities. "Oil is starting to feel as if it is heading for the doldrums," John Evans, analyst at oil broker PVM, told clients in a note. Wildfires in Alberta, however, poses a potential risk to crude supplies in Canada though production has remained solid so far, according to Goldman. The worst of the wildfire season likely lies ahead, with a third of the wildfires in Alberta burning out of control, threatening 400,000 barrels per day in production, according to the investment bank.

Caracas CNN —It would be easy to dismiss this Sunday’s presidential election in Venezuela as a fait accompli. The opposition campaign has re-energized its bases, and the candidature of Edmundo González has attracted widespread support in Venezuela and abroad. A chance to rebuild Venezuela’s economic power“On the ballot is how long it’ll take to fix Venezuela’s economy,” said Asdrubal Oliveros, founder of Caracas firm Ecoanalitica, in his weekly podcast on July 8. Once the fifth-largest economy in Latin America, today Venezuela’s economy has shrunk to the equivalent of a medium-sized city, smaller than say, Milwaukee, according to data from the IMF. As Venezuela’s economy has crumbled, around eight million Venezuelans have already fled their country, many of them scattered across South America.

Ford Motor said on Thursday it would retool a plant in Canada to produce large pickup trucks rather than the electric sport-utility vehicles it had previously planned to make there. The Ford plant, in Oakville, Ontario, recently stopped making the gasoline-powered Ford Edge S.U.V., and was slated to shift to new electric versions of the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator, both three-row S.U.V.s. Instead, Ford will turn the factory in Oakville into a third production location for its Super Duty pickup trucks, which are among its most profitable models. Jim Farley, the chief executive of Ford, said the company’s two other Super Duty plants, in Kentucky and Ohio, were running at full capacity but couldn’t produce as many vehicles as its commercial customers wanted. Super Duty trucks are typically used to haul heavy equipment and materials by building contractors, oil and gas companies and other businesses.

U.S. oil futures edged slightly lower on Thursday after jumping 2.6% in the previous session as crude inventories fell for the third week in a row. U.S. commercial crude inventories fell by 4.9 million barrels last week, though gasoline stocks rose by 3.3 million barrels and motor fuel demand weakened by 615,000 barrels per day. Here are today's energy prices:Falling oil inventories, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, seasonal demand and expectations of lower interest rates have all coincided to push oil prices higher in recent weeks, Bart Melek, head of commodity strategy at TD Securities, told clients in a note late Wednesday. "However, we don't expect the current rally to be sustained," Melek said. But the market will be volatile as hurricanes, uncertainty in the Middle East, policy in China, and statements from OPEC all have the to potential to move prices, according to Melek.

New York CNN —Gas prices could soon soar across the Chicago metropolitan area after a tornado narrowly missed a major ExxonMobil refinery outside of Chicago Monday night, knocking out power to the facility. The refinery, know as ExxonMobil’s Joliet Refinery, is located in neighboring Channahon, Illinois. The line of storms that hit the area Monday night produced 11 tornadoes in the greater Chicago area, including the one that hit Channahon, according to the National Weather Service. It will take a few days to return the Joliet refinery to normal production, assuming no damage occurred beyond the power outage, Lipow said. For decades, one industry has sustained the small, remote Colombian village of Caño Cabra: cocaine. Later, they mix the leaves with gasoline and other chemicals to make chalky white bricks of coca paste. But two years ago, the villagers said, something alarming happened: The drug traffickers who buy the coca paste and turn it into cocaine stopped showing up. The same pattern was repeated again and again in communities across the country where coca is the only source of income. Colombia, the global nexus of the cocaine industry, where Pablo Escobar became the world’s best known criminal, and which still produces more of the drug than any other nation, is facing tectonic shifts as a result of domestic and global forces that are reshaping the drug industry.

Physical goods have accounted for much of the deflation over the past year, according to economists. Outside of supply-demand dynamics, the U.S. dollar's strength relative to other global currencies has also helped rein in prices for goods, economists said. However, a shift toward higher tariffs and less free trade could serve to push up goods prices "quite significantly," she added. Why there's been deflation for food, travel, electronicsPrices have also declined for items including food, travel and electronics. Travelers have seen deflation for airline fares (prices are down 5.1% annually) amid factors like an increased volume of available seats.
