One of the downsides of taking new anti-obesity medications is that patients tend to lose lean muscle mass along with body fat. "This is a major shortcoming in terms of not just quality of life for the patients who have to lose lean muscle mass, but there's actually room to improve on the weight loss and there [are] other metabolic benefits to improving your lean muscle mass ... [including] you might have better durability of weight loss." The drug is being tested in a phase 2b study alongside semaglutide to protect against loss of muscle mass. Until then, patients will need to watch what they eat and focus on exercise just as they would on any other weight loss regimen. When that occurs, muscle loss will be an even bigger issue than it is now.

“They tend to close in these neighborhoods regardless of whether or not there is another pharmacy nearby,” Qato said. Closings can create so-called “pharmacy deserts,” or neighborhoods without easy access to a drugstore. “It’ll kind of worsen the problem of pharmacy deserts and disparities in pharmacy access,” Qato said. She noted that patients who lose drugstore access are less likely to stay on their regular prescriptions, and that can affect their health. Jonas said drugstores do want to help with pharmacy access, but the economics still need to work for these companies.

At the same time, legacy media companies face off against another well-known demon: cord-cutting. Technology companies such as Apple and Amazon can lean on their respective hardware and e-commerce businesses, said Paul Fanelli, a research analyst at Gabelli Funds. Even so, Wall Street sees only a handful of pure-play winners in the TV and streaming space winning consumer attention over the long run. Already, the technology companies have shown some promise. Consumers are increasingly forgoing pay TV packages from cable companies and opting for bundles from companies like Alphabet, he said.

Overall U.S. banks' cash assets were $3.26 trillion as of Aug. 23, up 5.4% from the end of 2022. In such an environment, pricing power is crucial to a firm's success, says Kevin Dreyer. One of the qualities that makes a company attractive to them is strong pricing power: being able to hold prices steady in tough times or even raise them as inflation surges. "I don't tend to think of private label firms as having the best pricing power out there, but that said, what Treehouse has done is pretty unique," he said. The third firm Dreyer talked about was BellRing Brands (BRBR), which owns protein snack brands like PowerBar and Premier Protein. Dreyer also thinks they're a good candidate to be acquired by a larger firm at a premium.

2 JPMorgan buys First Republic Bank's assets

May 1 (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), the biggest U.S. bank by assets, said on Monday it will buy most of First Republic Bank's (FRC.N) assets after U.S. regulators seized the troubled bank. low single digits), strategically consistent (US wealth expansion), and system friendly - FDIC loss of only $13B (<est. "First, as with the GFC (Global Financial Crisis,) this once again shows the value of a fortress balance sheet. "Assets such as the U.S. dollar and Japanese yen will be on the radar as traders look for an asset of safety. Still, unlike Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, the FDIC had a buy waiting in the wings.
A simple focus on what is now a well-known phenomenon helped Mario Gabelli execute what he calls some of the best trades in his decades-long career. One of those companies, Chris-Craft, was eventually bought by News Corp. for $5.5 billion in the early 2000s. It was an investment on which Gabelli said he made at least 10 times his original stake. The other money-making trade, on the now defunct Lin Broadcasting, was one Gabelli said he made a "significant amount of money" on. "It basically became EBITDA minus capex, and that notion has gotten pretty far along in the last 40 years," he said.

Billionaire investor Mario Gabelli is finding some value buying opportunities in this murky macroenvironment. Due to its reasonable balance sheet, solid management and defense tailwinds, Gabelli said investors can make 50% on their investment in two years' time. Finally, Gabelli highlighted Grupo Televisa SAB , a Latin American media company based in Mexico. In 2021, Grupo Televisa agreed to sell its media and content division in a deal valued at $4.8 billion, while maintaining a stake in the newly formed TelevisaUnivision. A potential public offering in the next year and a half should also benefit Grupo Televisa, now trading under $5 a share, Gabelli said.

First Republic seeks new ways to escape unrealized losses
  + stars: | 2023-03-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
March 21 (Reuters) - First Republic Bank's (FRC.N) efforts to secure a capital infusion continued without success on Tuesday, as the troubled regional lender started to plan for the possibility it may need to downsize or get a government backstop. Bloomberg News reported U.S. officials and Wall Street leaders seeking to aid First Republic were exploring the possibility of government backing that would help overcome the issue of the bank's unrealized losses. JPMorgan is advising First Republic on its options to raise capital from investors, a source familiar with the situation previously said. "There are a number of factors lifting the (financial) stocks, including the comments by Yellen. "We believe First Republic remains in crisis," said Jason Benowitz, senior portfolio manager at CI Roosevelt.
