COPENHAGEN—Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen looked poised to win re-election by a razor-thin margin Tuesday in an election dominated by a cost-of-living crunch and a disruption in gas supplies from Russia, which had added pressure on her government already under fire for its order to cull millions of mink during the Covid-19 pandemic. Ms. Frederiksen’s Social Democrats won 27.5% of the vote, making it by far the largest of the 14 parties on the ballot. The center-left coalition backing her had gained 87 of the 90 mandates needed to win a majority after all the votes had been counted in metropolitan Denmark.
COPENHAGEN, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Former prime minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen looked set to become the king-maker after Denmark's election on Tuesday in which neither the ruling left nor right-wing opposition looked set to win a majority in parliament, according to an exit poll. It indicated that Rasmussen's new Moderates party, founded only four months ago, stood to become the fourth biggest in parliament with 17 seats. The right-wing opposition appeared on course for 73 seats, and could thus also form a government with Rasmussen's mandate. The Liberals, Rasmussen's ex-party and the main opposition, looked set to win only 24 seats, down from 43 previously. Frederiksen campaigned for a broad coalition across the political middle, arguing that political unity is needed at a time of international uncertainty.

COPENHAGEN, Oct 7 (Reuters) - The screenwriter of hit series "Borgen" says the main theme in the show's latest season - the darker side of holding power - drew inspiration from Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who has been criticised for centralising authority. "We have a premise for Borgen ... Can you remain in power and still remain true to yourself?," Price told Reuters during an interview in Copenhagen. 1/3 Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen speaks during a news conference in front of Marienborg in Copenhagen, Denmark October, 5 2022. "Naturally, we are also inspired by elements in the character of our current Prime Minister," Price said, adding that Nyborg's character was also influenced by many other current and former political personalities. "I'm sure a lot of people in the UK would enjoy that, especially if we weren't very friendly towards Brussels," Price said.

The CIA told Germany weeks ago the Nord Stream pipelines could be attacked, sources told Der Spiegel. The pipelines were intended to be the main artery of natural-gas supply from Russia to Europe. On Monday, three severe leaks were discovered on the four Nord Stream pipelines, which run from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea. Nord Stream AG, the operator of the pipelines, said Tuesday the damage they'd sustained was "unprecedented." German media earlier Tuesday reported government officials as saying they believed the damage to the Nord Stream pipelines wasn't accidental.
Two senior German lawmakers have pointed the finger at Russia over suspected sabotage of Nord Stream. European lawmakers had previously left open the question about who the suspected Nord Stream saboteur could be. On Monday, Danish and Swedish authorities detected three severe leaks affecting the four Nord Stream pipelines, which run from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea. Before Russia invaded Ukraine, Nord Stream was intended as the main artery for natural-gas exports from Russia to Europe. The US Central Intelligence Agency warned Germany weeks ago about potential attacks on Nord Stream, German magazine Der Spiegel reported Tuesday.
US security advisor is speaking to his Danish counterpart about the "apparent sabotage" of the Nord Stream pipelines. The US is supporting investigation efforts and will continue safeguarding Europe's energy security, he said. "I spoke to my counterpart Jean-Charles Ellermann-Kingombe of Denmark about the apparent sabotage of Nord Stream pipelines," Sullivan tweeted Tuesday night. "The U.S. is supporting efforts to investigate and we will continue our work to safeguard Europe's energy security," he added. The Nord Stream 2 natural-gas pipeline, which runs parallel to Nord Stream 1, has never been operational because Germany shelved the project in February, days before Russia invaded Ukraine.
Denmark said the Nord Stream 1 pipeline gas leaks in the Baltic Sea were likely deliberate sabotage. European natural gas benchmarks jumped above 200 euros )$191.56) early Wednesday due to worries about the risks to gas supplies to Europe. The region is already facing an energy crisis after Russia choked off flows via the key Nord Stream 1 pipeline. Investors meanwhile were monitoring developments after recent damage to the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, which are leaking natural gas into the Baltic Sea. The US Central Intelligence Agency warned Germany weeks ago about potential attacks on Nord Stream, German magazine Der Spiegel reported Tuesday.
CNN —Leaders of several Western countries have said leaks in two Russian gas pipelines are likely the result of sabotage, vowing a strong response as investigations continue. “The destruction that occurred on the same day simultaneously on three strings of the offshore gas pipelines of the Nord Stream system is unprecedented,” said the pipeline’s operator Nord Stream AG. The incident has sank any remaining expectations that Europe could receive gas via Nord Stream 1 before the winter, as gas prices soar and countries hunt for alternative energy supplies. Russia halted all gas supplies to Europe via Nord Stream 1 in August, blaming Western sanctions for causing technical difficulties – which European politicians say is just a pretext to stop supplying gas. The new Nord Stream 2 pipeline had not yet entered commercial operation.
A senior Ukrainian official called the incident a Russian attack to destabilise Europe, without giving proof. Neither pipeline was pumping gas to Europe at the time the leaks were found, but the incidents will scupper any remaining expectations that Europe could receive fuel via Nord Stream 1 before winter. Operator Nord Stream said the damage was "unprecedented". Damage to the Nord Stream pipelines was caused by intentional acts of sabotage, Denmark said. The Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines have been leaking natural gas into the Baltic Sea. The Danish military captured footage on Tuesday of natural gas swirling at the sea's surface, and published photographs of the massive spill. After Russia's late-February full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Moscow suspended gas flow through the newer Nord Stream 2, which wasn't yet operational. More recently, it has stopped gas flow through what was previously a fully operational Nord Stream 1.

It was not an accident," Mette Frederiksen said at a press briefing in Copenhagen. The leaks, first reported on Monday, were in international waters but inside Denmark's and Sweden's exclusive economic zone. Danish authorities assess that the damage was caused by blasts, Energy Minister Dan Jorgensen said at the briefing.

BRUSSELS, Sept 27 (Reuters) - European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday said the leaks of the Nord Stream pipelines were caused by sabotage, and warned of the "strongest possible response" should active European energy infrastructure be attacked. "Spoke to (Danish Prime Minister Mette) Frederiksen on the sabotage action Nordstream," von der Leyen said on Twitter, adding it was paramount now to investigate the incidents to get full clarity on the "events and why." "Any deliberate disruption of active European energy infrastructure is unacceptable and will lead to the strongest possible response," she warned.
