EU slaps tariffs on Chinese EVs, risking Beijing payback
  + stars: | 2024-10-29 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
A senior EU official said the extra tariffs had been formally approved on Tuesday. It says China's spare production capacity of three million EVs per year is twice the size of the EU market. Beijing has called the EU tariffs protectionist and damaging to EU-China relations and automotive supply chains, and has launched its own probes this year into imports of EU brandy, dairy and pork products in apparent retaliation. The Commission estimates Chinese brands' share of the EU market has risen to 8% from below 1% in 2019 and could reach 15% in 2025. German carmakers have heavily criticized the EU measures, aware that possible higher Chinese import duties on large-engine gasoline vehicles would hit them hardest.

Republicans, led by Trump, have largely condemned EVs, saying that they are being forced upon consumers and that they will ruin the U.S. automotive industry. CNN —A “staggering array” of witches’ marks have been discovered on the walls of a Tudor property in England. News of the discovery, aptly timed to coincide with Halloween, was released by English Heritage, a charity that looks after hundreds of historic monuments, buildings and sites. These include a “staggering array” of designs, according to English Heritage, though there’s a notable concentration in the servants’ wing of the hall. Over the course of two years, long-time English Heritage volunteer Rick Berry discovered and mapped around 20 carvings at the Tudor property. In 2019, hundreds of witches’ marks were found scratched into the walls of an English cave system in the East Midlands, central England.

To distinguish this type of turbid Japanese alcohol from that of the ubiquitous and transparent sake, there are two distinct if slightly misleading categories: seishu (清酒), or clear sake, and doburoku (濁酒). However, when making doburoku, they are all simultaneously placed in with the yeast starter, causing the resulting mixture to be comparatively overflowing with sugars. For nearly as long as rice has been cultivated in Japan, doburoku has existed. In essence, all doburoku made from then on came to be called mitsuzoushu (密造酒), “secretly produced alcohol,” or moonshine. LA PAZ, Bolivia — Bolivian ex-president Evo Morales said on Sunday his vehicle was fired upon amid rising political tensions in the South American country between a faction around the iconic former leader and the government of his former ally, President Luis Arce. Morales posted a video on Facebook taken inside a moving car, showing him sitting in the front passenger seat and at least two bullet holes in the windshield. Morales and Arce, his former economy minister, are both part of the same socialist MAS political party but have clashed over the last year, part of a power struggle ahead of 2025 elections. Morales is also facing allegations that he had relationships with minors. He was formally summoned by regional prosecutors to testify in the case but did not appear, and now faces an arrest warrant.

In an interview earlier this year, he ruled out the possibility of ordaining women deacons, who can carry out functions like a priest apart from saying Mass and hearing confessions. Furthermore, Catholic teaching bars women from ordination to the priesthood, a decision that Francis has maintained, although he has allowed studies of female deacons. During previous papacies the question of ordaining women was not even up for discussion. CNN —Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have laid out a broad array of ideas aimed at making life more affordable and strengthening the economy, which rank at the top of voters’ concerns. Both Trump and Harris have rolled out pricey provisions without specifying how they would cover the cost. Though his campaign hasn’t released details on the proposal, Trump has indicated that he would eliminate both federal income taxes and payroll taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. Around half of beneficiaries – mainly those with higher incomes – pay federal income tax on their Social Security payments. Harris’ plan would also accelerate the speed of Medicare’s drug price negotiations so that the costs of more medications come down faster.

BEIJING, China — China will offer the Taliban tariff-free access to its vast construction, energy and consumer sectors, Beijing’s envoy to Afghanistan said on Thursday, as the ailing resource-rich but diplomatically-isolated regime looks to build up its markets. “China will offer Afghanistan zero-tariff treatment for 100% tariff lines,” Zhao Xing, Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan, wrote on his official X account late on Thursday, above a photo of him meeting acting deputy prime minister Abdul Kabir. The country exported no commodities to China last year, the data shows, but Zhao has regularly posted photos of him meeting Taliban officials responsible for mining, petroleum, trade and regional connectivity since his appointment last September. “In the Horn of Africa, China’s Special Envoy Xue Bing said that the best way to resolve security and terrorism challenges is through economic development. I think they are bringing that same mindset to Afghanistan,” said Eric Orlander, co-founder of the China-Global South Project.

President Joe Biden is scheduled to issue a formal apology Friday for a government-run boarding school system that forcibly separated generations of Native American children from their families. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland listens to testimony from students who attended Native American boarding schools, at the Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, Okla., on July 9, 2022. In June 2021, Haaland launched an initiative to investigate the federal Indian boarding school system and shed light on its traumas. An initial report on the system published in 2022 found that hundreds of Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian children died attending Indian boarding schools run or supported by the U.S. government. The report this year urged the federal government to both establish a national memorial to acknowledge the experiences of those in the boarding schools and to apologize to those harmed by the policy.

CNN —President Joe Biden on Friday formally apologized to Native Americans for what he described as “one of the most horrific chapters in American history,” government-funded boarding schools that abused indigenous children and forced them to assimilate over a 150-year period. Three years ago, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary, commissioned the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative to review the schools’ impacts on Native Americans. Their final report, issued this summer, found at least 973 Native American children died while attending these federal boarding schools. It’s the first time he has visited Indian Country as president and the first time in 10 years a sitting president has visited tribal lands. He paused his speech to say that the killing of people in Gaza “has to stop.”CNN’s Arlette Saenz contributed to this report.

CNN —President Joe Biden is expected to issue an apology to the Native American community for the federal government’s role in the abusive Indian boarding schools that forced Native American children to assimilate over a 150-year period, two sources familiar with the plans said. “The federally-run Indian boarding school system was designed to assimilate Native Americans by destroying Native culture, language and identity through harsh militaristic and assimilationist methods,” the White House said Thursday. In 2021, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary, commissioned the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative to review the impact of the federal boarding school policies. The department issued a final report this summer confirming at least 973 Native American children died while attending these federal boarding schools. At least 18,000 children were taken from their families and forced to attend more than 400 Indian boarding schools across 37 states or then-territories between 1819 and 1969.

CNN —The US and Western allies are moving forward with a $50 billion loan package to Ukraine backed by the profits of frozen Russian assets, which includes a US contribution of $20 billion, the White House announced Wednesday. “Ukraine will receive the assistance it needs now, without burdening our taxpayers,” said White House deputy national security advisor for international economics Daleep Singh. The US will disperse at least half of its $20 billion loan by this December, according to Singh. European lawmakers on Tuesday approved a loan of up roughly $37.7 billion (35 billion euros) for Ukraine backed by the frozen Russian assets. Exactly two weeks before Election Day, a new CNBC/Generation Lab survey finds that Vice President Kamala Harris has grown her advantage in recent months over Republican Donald Trump among Americans between the ages of 18 and 34. Faced with a similar question in July's Youth & Money Survey, only 46% of respondents selected Harris, while 34% said they would be voting for Trump. Kennedy formally dropped his bid for president on Aug. 23, and respondents in the latest poll were not offered a third option. Harris' 20 point lead over Trump in the latest poll is in line with the margin by which President Joe Biden ultimately won younger voters in his 2020 presidential election victory. The latest poll results also hint at an enthusiasm gap among young voters, which Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov.
