What it was like to pilot the supersonic Concorde jet

It’s said that during the aircraft’s 27 years of service, there were more qualified American astronauts than there were British Airways Concorde pilots. It would take him back to the day he stood at Heathrow, watching the first commercial Concorde flight take off. Future of supersonic flightAlmost two decades since Concorde’s final flight, the allure of supersonic flight hasn’t waned, with companies such as Boom Supersonic plotting plans for Concorde’s successor.

“He knows democracy is on the line, he knows slavery is a moral evil,” Crawford said of Adams, who became a leading antislavery voice in the House of Representatives, where he served after leaving the White House. He deserves to be in the pantheon.”“Founding Son,” available through iHeartRadio starting April 13, is the latest entry in the crowded field of history podcasts. But it’s one where Crawford (who composed and played the show’s old-timey mandolin theme) hopes to use his musical celebrity and serious historical chops to illuminate a complex, formative period in the evolution of American democracy. The Early Republic, as scholars call it, may be a rich field of study. But it’s largely a blank for most Americans, who are a bit foggy on what exactly happened between the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Morning Bid: Glass half full on disinflation
  + stars: | 2023-04-11 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Headline March consumer price inflation is expected to drop as low as 5.2% from 6% - showing the disinflation journey from more than 40-year highs of 9.2% last June to the Fed's 2% target more than half way there. The rider is that headline inflation rates are expected be below stickier annual 'core' rates, which are forecast to have ticked higher to 5.6% last month. The International Monetary Fund's updated World Economic Outlook is also due on Tuesday ahead of the Fund's Spring meeting in Washington. The disinflation picture was encouraged around the world on Tuesday as Chinese consumer price inflation hit an 18-month low last month and the annual decline in factory prices sped up. Hopes that central bank rates are cresting worldwide lifted risk appetite across the spectrum with major cryptocurrency bitcoin broke back above $30,000 level for the first time in 10 months on Tuesday.
I tried intermittent fasting for a month, and I felt less tired and more productive at work. I talked to the fitness coach Farren Morgan, who explained that intermittent fasting focuses on when — not what — you eat. "Most people find it easy to stick to this particular fasting plan because it's achievable and sustainable long-term," he said. He advised anyone considering intermittent fasting to first consult their doctor, especially if they have a preexisting medical condition. A study published in the National Library of Medicine actually found that, for some people, intermittent fasting reduced fatigue.
Morning Bid: Markets labor under recession cloud
  + stars: | 2023-04-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Mike Dolan. If the tight U.S. labor market is finally unwinding, markets suspect the Federal Reserve's job may well done after all - but at the cost of a looming recession. With Wednesday's private sector jobs reading for March and Friday's national payrolls report ahead, U.S. interest rate markets were jolted again on Tuesday by surprisingly soft data on job vacancies that suggested cooling demand for staff. More decisively, the two-year Treasury yield plunged more than 20 basis points intraday to hover just above 3.8% on Wednesday. LONDON, March 31 (Reuters) - Even after a bank shock that could well have changed the whole picture, investors appear reluctant to give up the ghost just yet. The tech-heavy, interest-rate sensitive Nasdaq (.IXIC) is up 14% and even broad European bank stock indices (.SX7P) are still up more than 4% for the year. Pull the lens out as far as it can go and MSCI's all-country index of world stocks (.MIWD00000PUS) is up more than 5%. That U-turn in thinking during the month saw wild swings in the bond and rates markets, where key volatility gauges (.MOVE) hit their highest since the 2008 crash. by Mike Dolan; Editing by Toby Chopra; Twitter: @reutersMikeDOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Arif Ali | AFP | Getty ImagesAbout 90% of the global population in 2022 experienced unhealthy air quality, and only six countries met the World Health Organization's recommendations of safe air pollutant levels, according to a new report from Swiss air quality technology company IQAir. The report found that the top five most polluted countries in 2022 were Chad, Iraq, Pakistan, Bahrain and Bangladesh. Lahore's air quality worsened to 97.4 micrograms of PM 2.5 particles per cubic meter in 2022 from 86.5 in the year prior, making it the most polluted city in the world. The 2022 report used air quality data from more than 30,000 regulatory air quality monitoring stations and air quality sensors from 7,323 cities across 131 countries, regions and territories. "Too many people around the world don't know that they are breathing polluted air," Aidan Farrow, senior air quality scientist at Greenpeace International, said in a statement.

Dovish economist Paul Krugman concurs with hawk Larry Summers on the Fed's path forward. Summers told Bloomberg TV on Friday that the Fed is facing symmetric risks in going too fast or slow on rates. "This really disturbs me to say this, but I think I agree with Larry," Krugman told Bloomberg TV on Monday. In an interview with Bloomberg TV on Monday, the inflation dove Krugman concurred with an earlier statement from his more hawkish counterpart. On the other side, Krugman has warned that the Fed is at risk of going too far in fighting inflation, causing unnecessary economic damage.
We’re currently in the thick of fourth quarter earnings reports, but traders don’t seem to care about how companies fared during the final months of 2022. These slowdowns have been partially factored into stock prices, he said, “but not necessarily in full.”The upside: Market reaction appears to go both ways. Gas prices are surging this month. Gas prices are rocketing higher. Why are gas prices jumping?
NEW DELHI, Jan 26 (Reuters) - India showcased its military and its cultural diversity in a colourful parade on Thursday at the revamped colonial avenue in New Delhi to mark Republic Day, the anniversary of the day the country's secular Constitution came into effect in 1950. Several thousand people watched the parade from seats around Kartavya Path - or path of duty - braving the cold on a foggy morning in New Delhi, while millions more watched on television. Accompanied by marching bands, troops from the country's military, border and police forces paced in perfect synchronisation towards the dais where President Droupadi Murmu took the salute. Morning bid: Netflix flickers

With the macro picture turning foggy again, streaming giant Netflix (NFLX.O) generated a rare bright spark in an otherwise gloomy corporate earnings season. But it has bounced back more than 60% from the lows of last June and the leadership shakeup may not shape the road ahead. With aggregate S&P500 earnings tracking a year-on-year contraction of about 3% for the fourth quarter, the Netflix news was welcome. In wider markets, a dour Thursday showed some retreat of the early year optimism on peaking central bank interest rates. The outlook looks foggy for Salesforce as the software giant adjusts to a new normal after years of record growth, according to Cowen. "With several recent exec departures & a major restructuring underway, we expect to see elevated levels of disruption risk," Wood wrote. The company also announced late last year the departure of co-CEO Bret Taylor and Slack founder and CEO Stewart Butterfield . Woods trimmed Cowen's price target on Salesforce to $160 from $175 a share, reflecting just 9% upside from Thursday's close. "After a long cycle of high growth through both organic & inorganic efforts, Salesforce has reached greater market penetration and is entering a more mature growth phase," Wood wrote.
"If you’re on a road trip and you encounter foggy weather or a dangerous highway, it’s a good idea to slow down. "That’s why I supported the (Fed's) decision last month to reduce the pace of rate increases. And the same considerations suggest slowing the pace further at the upcoming meeting." With so much unknown about 2023, she said, the Fed should not "lock in" on a peak policy rate but instead stay flexible by increasing rates in smaller increments. Inflation by the Fed's preferred gauge, the personal consumption expenditures price index, has averaged 5.8% at an annual rate for the past two years.
Against a backdrop of slowing economic activity and demand, these "base effects" strongly suggest broader inflation has peaked and could fall rapidly in the coming months. Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon, reckons that these disinflationary dynamics will intensify, so much so that headline U.S. consumer price inflation may fall below 2% by the end of this year. Brent oil is below $80 a barrel, and on Wednesday its year-on-year price differential turned negative for the first time in two years. This trend is likely to continue due to base effects - Brent hit a 14-year peak around $130/bbl last March and was above $100/bbl as recently as July. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the non-seasonally adjusted average monthly rate of consumer price inflation in the first half of last year was 1%.

Matt McLennan and Kimball Brooker have guided their fund to a top 8% performance in the past decade. That's in sharp contrast to Matt McLennan and Kimball Brooker, co-managers of the $42 billion First Eagle Global Fund (SGENX). "What you'll find is that the amount of whatever it is that we're collecting never becomes large enough to do too much damage to the portfolio," Brooker told Insider. Those first two points are often prioritized by managers seeking quality stocks, but fewer fund managers target those latter two attributes. Fund managers should carefully consider a stock's long-term outlook instead of simply whether or not it diversifies and lowers the volatility of a portfolio.

It was a foggy September morning in 1941 when he approached Ellis Island on the deck of a boat called the Serpa Pinto. An 11-year-old Jewish refugee separated from his parents, he had spent two years shuttling through French orphanages in flight from the Nazis. Remembering the sight of the statue 80 years later, he was still stirred by his first enchanted vision of freedom. The country has a long history of conflict over newcomers that is at odds with its image of itself as a welcoming melting pot. “The U.S. and the Holocaust” recounts exhaustively the migration barriers and public bigotry that plagued desperate Jewish people seeking refuge in the U.S. in the 1930s and 1940s.
