June 28 (Reuters) - Private equity firm Arcline Investment Management on Wednesday proposed to buy Circor International (CIR.N) for $57 per share in cash, topping a rival bid from KKR & Co (KKR.N) for the industrial machinery maker. Circor, which makes flow-control products to help manage and control liquids and gases, did not respond to a Reuters request for comment. Arcline's funds own a direct competitor of Circor called Fairbanks Morse Defense, a provider of diesel engines and equipment to the U.S. Navy, KKR said. It said its bid was supported by financing from BMO Capital Markets Corp and Bank of Montreal. Circor too had said on Tuesday that KKR offered more financing certainty as well as a clearer and faster path to antitrust approvals.

Circor, an industrial machinery maker, said KKR had sweetened its all-cash deal from $49 to $51 per share in the wake of a rival bid of $52.65 per share in cash from an unidentified party. One of Fairbanks' subsidiaries is Hunt Valve, which competes with Circor in providing valve systems to the Navy. Arcline and KKR declined to comment. Circor said it rejected the higher offer because it concluded there was a risk of a protracted review by antitrust regulators that would jeopardize the deal. Circor shares ended at $51.49 on Tuesday, above the $51 per share deal clinched with KKR, indicating that some investors believed an even better deal was possible.

Two U.S. Army helicopters returning from a training flight crashed in Alaska on Thursday with four people aboard, killing three soldiers and injuring the fourth, Army officials said. The Army’s 11th Airborne Division confirmed the deaths late Thursday, saying that the two AH-64 Apache helicopters had crashed near Healy, Alaska, which is more than 200 miles north of Anchorage. Two of the four soldiers were declared dead at the crash site, and a third died on the way to a hospital in Fairbanks, it said. “This is an incredible loss for these soldiers’ families, their fellow soldiers, and for the division,” Maj. Gen. Brian Eifler, the division’s commanding general, said in a statement. John M. Pennell, a spokesman for 11th Airborne Division, said that he did not yet have details on the injured soldier’s condition.
The "State of the Air" report found that nearly 120 million people, more than a third of the population, lived in areas with unhealthy levels of air pollution between 2019 and 2021. The report assigned letter grades reflecting the number of days that air quality in a specific area reached unhealthy levels on the Air Quality Index. Exposure to unhealthy levels of ozone air pollution makes breathing difficult for more people across the U.S. than any other single pollutant, the report said. Wildfires in the region were a major factor in the increasing number of days and places with unhealthy levels of particle pollution, the report found. The report used data from air-quality monitors managed by state, local and tribal air pollution control authorities in counties across the country.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines have exited 74 airports since 2020. Some of the airports are in the Essential Air Service program and are now served by a new airline. In September 2022, the company's research revealed American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines had exited 59 airports. In total, American has left 19 airports, Delta has exited 17, and United has departed 38. American, Delta, and United have all cut routes in recent years, citing poor performance and the pilot shortage as contributing factors.
New analysis reveals dynamic volcanism on Venus

A February 1991 image showed the vent as a circular formation covering about one square mile (2.6 square km). A October 1991 image showed the vent with an irregular shape covering about 1.5 square miles (3.9 square km). Another study published in 2020 identified 37 volcanic structures apparently active in the past 2 million to 3 million years. Venus, with a diameter of about 7,500 miles (12,000 km), is slightly smaller than Earth. Its thick atmosphere - mainly carbon dioxide - traps in heat in a runaway greenhouse effect, rendering Venus the solar system's hottest planet.
Military officials say that until they are able to recover the debris, they are unlikely to know for sure what the objects were. Scientists use balloons to study wind patterns, air quality, and other aspects of Earth's atmosphere. STILL UNEXPLAINEDThe object downed over Canada on Saturday was described by Canada's defense minister as resembling a balloon. Senator Marco Rubio, leaving a classified briefing on the objects on Tuesday, told reporters that they are no different than the hundreds of benign objects cited in past intelligence reports. "We've never shot down anything in over 65 years of NORAD, and in one week they shot down three things," he said.
They were picked for their high rate of bookings, growing revenue, affordability, and regulations. The list of 25 cities and towns captures destinations with "momentum," said AirDNA economist Jamie Lane. This year, the team also responded to the growing wave of regulations cities and towns are putting on short-term rentals. Locations like Burlington, Vermont and Madison, Wisconsin, for example, were removed because of new rules that limit who can own short-term rentals or require month-long stays. The list, however, is mostly dominated by midsized cities in the Midwest, where home prices are cheaper than in more expensive coastal cities.
Multiple experts told Reuters that HAARP could not have been responsible for the earthquake in Turkey or anywhere as it does not have such capabilities. HAARP CANNOT TRIGGER EARTHQUAKESAccording to the HAARP website’s FAQ section, it cannot control or manipulate the weather (haarp.gi.alaska.edu/faq). Nishimura said there may not have been lightning strikes at all in the video shared online. Experts say the Feb. 6 earthquake in Turkey was not a result of a HAARP operation because HAARP does not have capabilities to trigger earthquakes. Meanwhile, one group of a related species — Neanderthals — developed a mutation that could have spared them the smell of their own body odors. It's a popular idea that humans have a bad sense of smell, as compared with dogs, for instance. Will Oliver/PA Images/Getty"We have to really understand ourselves within our own context," rather than comparing humans to dogs or monkeys, as previous research on smell receptors has done, Hoover said. To Hoover's surprise, the Neanderthals, Denisovan, and humans all appeared to have the same repertoire of smells. More research like it, with more samples of ancient genomes, could reveal a clearer picture of Neanderthal and Denisovan life.

American Airlines is cutting 3 cities from its network, blaming the pilot shortage and "soft demand." One small airport — Del Rio, Texas — will lose airline service entirely after the carrier's exit. Del Rio, a tiny city in southern Texas with only about 35,000 people, is currently served by American from Dallas/Fort Worth. However, the airline's announced exit will leave Del Rio without any air service link to the rest of the country. Del Rio joins a growing list of 19 cities that American has dropped since the pandemic, the carrier confirmed to Insider.

Beavers are invading Alaska's Arctic tundra as it warms, transforming the landscape like wildfire. As the Arctic tundra warms, woody plants are growing along its rivers and streams, creating perfect habitats for beavers. The beaver ponds create lush oases that could increase biodiversity, but they also play a role in accelerating the climate crisis. All in all, satellites reveal more than 11,000 beaver ponds have appeared across the tundra. Environmental Research Letters/Imagery © DigitalGlobe"All of western Alaska is now really densely populated with beaver ponds," Tape said.
A man in his 50s had an eight-hour window to get from Alaska to Seattle for a heart transplant. His flights were canceled because of the massive winter storm, NBC News reported. More than 4,500 flights were canceled by last Friday afternoon as the winter storm engulfed the central and eastern US, Insider reported. According to another Facebook post by his wife, they turned the flight around due to the winter storm and landed in Anchorage, Alaska. Holland had hoped that the heart transplant would give him another 30 years of life, his wife wrote.
In the span of eight hours, Patrick Holland went from excitement to hope to crushing disappointment after a massive winter storm caused him to miss a lifesaving heart transplant procedure. Patrick Holland told the news station that he was in the air for four hours when the pilot made an announcement: the plane was being diverted to Anchorage. "I think I cried more that day than I have in my life," he told King 5. In the meantime, Patrick Holland will be staying in Washington state so he is closer to the hospital. Patrick Holland told King 5 that receiving a new heart would hopefully give him the opportunity to live another 10, 20, or even 30 years.
Broken up sea ice is seen from the window of a NASA research flight above the east coast of Greenland. That's causing Arctic sea ice to diminish, the tundra to turn green with vegetation, and sea birds to starve to death in droves. Sean Gallup/Getty ImagesFor the first time this year, NOAA has determined that Arctic precipitation — either rain or snow — is increasing across all seasons. But in places like southwest Alaska, that means rain falling on top of snow, then freezing. Bhatt is part of a group of researchers assessing whether the Arctic tundra in southwest Alaska should be reclassified as sub-Arctic tundra.
In a 250-page proposed decision, regulators outlined reforms to the so-called "net energy metering", a state policy that issues credits to solar energy customers for generating excess electricity and feeding it back to the grid. The proposal will not affect current home solar owners and will maintain their current compensation, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) said. Shares of rooftop solar system providers, including Sunrun Inc (RUN.O), SunPower Corp (SPWR.O) and Sunnova Energy International Inc (NOVA.N), closed 20% to 27% higher on Thursday. "This has been an overhang for rooftop solar stocks that would be alleviated if passed similar to today's proposal," said Morningstar analyst Brett Castelli. "The CPUC's new proposed decision would really hurt.
NASA is studying "thermokarsts" in Alaska, lakes that appear as permafrost there thaws. Walter Anthony has been working with NASA's ABoVE project to study Big Trail lake's effect on climate change. "As they decompose it, they are belching out methane gas," she said. Walter Antony is seen in a kayak on Big Trail lake in Alaska. It's only the newer lakes, like Big Trail, which appeared less than 50 years ago, that give off high levels of the gas.
