BEIRUT, March 8 (Reuters) - Lebanon's commercial banks do not have enough liquidity to pay back depositors, the secretary general of the country's banking association said on Wednesday in a letter that laid out the banks' positions. The letter was signed by the Association of the Banks of Lebanon (ABL)'s Fadi Khalaf and served as the introduction to the ABL's monthly report. The letter said commercial banks had approximately $86.6 billion deposited at Lebanon's Central Bank as of mid-February, and a net negative position with correspondent banks of $204 million as of Jan. 31, 2023. El a cerut de asemenea anchete asupra rolului mai multor altor persoane ce au ocupat respectivele funcţii ministeriale în cadrul a trei guverne precedente. Investigaţiile făcute deja de judecătorul Swan însuşi au generat “unele suspiciuni în ceea ce priveşte responsabilitatea acestor miniştri şi a deficienţelor lor în gestionarea prezenţei de nitrat de amoniu în port”. Explozia a sute de tone de nitrat de amoniu în portul din Beirut s-a soldat cu peste 200 de morţi şi cu mii de răniţi şi a distrus o mare parte din capitala libaneză. Guvernul libanez a demisionat după această tragedie, însă continuă să gestioneze problemele curente, în condiţiile în care un nou guvern nu a fost nici până acum constituit.

Judecătorul care a fost ales pentru a investiga explozia încă nu a difuzat nicio informație asupra anchetei pe care o efectuează. O echipă a FBI și una franceză au venit în Liban după explozie și au fost implicate în investigațiile inițiale. Până în prezent, judecătorul Fadi Sawan a ordonat arestarea a 19 suspecți, inclusiv a șefului vămii din portul Beirut, Baderi Daher, a predecesorului său Shafik Merhi și a directorului portului, Hassan Kuraitim. Familiile victimelor au cerut o investigație internațională asupra exploziei care a provocat demisia premierului de la acea vreme, Hassan Diab.
