Nov 30 (Reuters) - Amkor Technology (AMKR.O) said Thursday it will spend $2 billion to build a new advanced semiconductor packaging and test facility in Arizona that will package and test chips for Apple (AAPL.O) produced at a nearby Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC (2330.TW) facility. Amkor said the facility will be the largest U.S. outsourced advanced packaging facility. Earlier this month, the Commerce Department disclosed details of its plans to spend $3 billion for advanced packaging. Advanced packaging is a high-tech method of placing multiple chips with a variety of functions in a densely interconnected “package." Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has made advanced packaging a priority and said earlier this year "the U.S. will develop multiple high-volume advanced packaging facilities, and become a global leader in packaging technologies."

Pay growth is also cooling faster for production and manufacturing jobs, at 4.2% year-over-year in August, down from an 11% annual peak in December 2021 and compared to the national average of 4.5%, according to jobs website Indeed. By 2030, technological and cognitive skills in the manufacturing sector will be in far higher demand as the share of physical and manual tasks drops by more than a quarter from 2016, McKinsey says. Based in upstate New York, GlobalFoundries isn't a household name because it's manufacturing semiconductors that are designed and sold by other companies. "Look at every electronic device in your house, and I would bet you money that every one of those devices has at least one GlobalFoundries chip in it," Thomas Caulfield, GlobalFoundries CEO, told CNBC. GlobalFoundries chips are inside everything from smartphones and cars to smart speakers and Bluetooth-enabled dishwashers. Although GlobalFoundries' chips are considered legacy nodes, the process and resources needed are still incredibly complex.
