The USS Bataan, an amphibious assault ship currently operating near the Red Sea, is moving towards Israel’s shores and could potentially help evacuate Americans, a U.S. defense official said Monday.
The Bataan, which is carrying members of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is expected to arrive near Israel in roughly five days, the official said.
It will join the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group, which is nearby.
The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, a second aircraft carrier strike group, is expected to reach the region in roughly two weeks.
