REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBRUSSELS/STOCKHOLM, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's X social media platform has just 2,294 content moderators to ensure users comply with EU online content rules, significantly fewer than Google (GOOGL.O) and TikTok, a senior European Commission official said on Friday. X has triggered concerns after Musk laid off many employees responsible for monitoring and regulating content amid the spread of disinformation on the platform. According to reports the companies submitted to the EU in September, X's 2,294 EU content moderators compared with 16,974 at Google's YouTube, 7,319 at Google Play and 6,125 at TikTok, the senior Commission official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Regulators are hoping that X will feel the pressure to boost its number of content moderators to catch up with its rivals, the official said.

REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - EU industry chief Thierry Breton has launched investigations into three tech platforms over content moderation decisions, including Elon Musk's X. The tech giants have faced mounting scrutiny in recent weeks, with a surge in harmful content and disinformation following Hamas' attack on Israel. Under the bloc's wide-sweeping Digital Services Act, very large tech platforms and search engines must do more to tackle illegal content and risks to public security, and to protect their services against manipulative techniques. Speaking during a radio interview with France Inter, Breton did not specify the other two platforms being investigated.

An overwhelming majority of the world's biggest-spending advertisers have stopped advertising on X following Elon Musk's acquisition of the company, according to new data provided exclusively to Insider by the marketing consultancy Ebiquity. The company drew its X data from its digital media solutions unit, through which it gathers digital media investment data from agencies and platforms. In the same interview she cited Visa, Nissan, and AT&T as among the "1,500" brands that had resumed spending on X. "We would welcome an official follow-up with supporting data in a time where trust and transparency are of critical importance," said Schreurs.

Elon Musk's X relies on free speech to work. But free speech is slowly tilting to paid speech on the platform. After all, "free speech" isn't very free if you're asked to cough up a regular fee. But the billionaire seems to have a grand plan for X, which involves taking the "free" out of "free speech." But by starting to charge users for access to X, Musk enters dangerous territory: a platform vital for documenting and sharing current affairs through free speech in real-time risks turning into a pay-to-play game.
