HONG KONG, Aug 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - South Korea’s dealmaking skeletons are back to haunt. Paul Singer's Elliott opposed a $9 billion union eight years ago of Samsung C&T (028260.KS) and Chiel Industries. South Korea’s successful prosecution of Lee, Park and a former minister that oversaw NPS, provided cause for Elliott to demand payback. Elliott sued in 2018 and the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague in June awarded the U.S. fund over $100 million. Far from being the end of it though, President Yoon Suk Yeol’s government is contesting that award in a British arbitration court.

Activist Commentary: Elliott is a very successful and astute activist investor, particularly in the technology sector. In January 2017, the firm filed a 13D on NRG with a plan centered around operational improvements and portfolio actions. As part of its plan, Elliott suggested that NRG focus on its core businesses by reducing costs, monetizing non-core assets to simplify its portfolio and paying down debt. To effectively oversee this plan, Elliott believes that the board needs new independent directors with expertise in the power and energy industry. "Strong management will be key to the success of the Repower NRG Plan," and "significant changes are needed."

Lots of Club holdings, including Nvidia (NVDA) and Alphabet (GOOGL), were among the stocks traded by some of Wall Street's biggest investors and money managers in the first quarter. Goldman Sachs said only a handful of activist investors have the power to move stocks the way he does. The Wall Street firm analyzed 2,142 shareholder activism campaigns since 2006 and identified the investors with the most number of campaigns. "A wide performance distribution exists for both successful and unsuccessful activist campaigns and varies by type of activist demand," Goldman's head of U.S. equity strategy David Kostin said in a note. The stocks Carl Icahn invests in tend to enjoy a double-digit boost in the 12 months after he starts an attack, according to Goldman. Other activists that have a similar impact on stocks during the time frame are Ancora Advisors and Clinton Group, Goldman said.

Hedge fund Elliott Management's decision to nominate candidates for Salesforce 's (CRM) board represents an escalation of the activist agitation at the Club holding. The Club generally believes activists' wishes for cost-cutting at Salesforce are positive, as long as Benioff remains at the helm. It's unclear whether Elliott is nominating two or three candidates for Salesforce's board, according to CNBC's David Faber, who broke the story Wednesday morning . Benioff is chairman of Salesforce's board. However, we don't want the activist pressure at Salesforce to cause Benioff to depart the company.

Feb 21 (Reuters) - Canada's Suncor Energy Inc (SU.TO) said on Tuesday former Exxon Mobil Corp executive Rich Kruger would take over as its chief executive from April 3, replacing interim boss Kris Smith, sending its shares up nearly 3% in afternoon trading. Kruger, a near 40-year veteran of Exxon (XOM.N), served as CEO of Imperial Oil Ltd (IMO.TO) for six years before retiring in 2019. "Investors are likely going to see this as a key reason to expect a complete positive change in the safety culture at SU," Eight Capital analysts said. Smith replaced Mark Little as CEO in July following a worker death, which was the fifth fatality at the company since 2019. The company named Smith as its finance chief in place of Alister Cowan, who plans to retire at the end of the year.
