Altria seeks US import ban on Juul e-vapor products

The move escalates a dispute between the two e-cigarette makers after Juul filed a similar patent infringement case against NJOY at the ITC in June. NJOY said in its filings that Juul products infringe two of its patents, and that it intends to obtain a ban on products including its currently marketed Juul device and Juul pods. NJOY also sued Juul in Delaware on Tuesday for infringing the same patents, seeking an unspecified amount of damages. Juul filed its own patent lawsuits against NJOY and Altria at the ITC and in Arizona federal court in June, seeking money damages and a ban on imports of NJOY's Ace vapor device. Altria won more than $95 million from cigarette rival R.J. Reynolds in North Carolina federal court last year after a jury found RJR infringed other Altria e-cigarette patents.

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The indictment of Former President Donald Trump for interfering in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia will be the biggest case of prosecutor Fani Willis' career, but it will not be her first contentious prosecution. “She’s not afraid of big cases,” said Gerald Griggs, a criminal defense attorney and president of the Georgia state conference of the NAACP. Willis worked from 2001 to 2018 in the Fulton County prosecutor's office, then won election as county prosecutor in 2020, defeating her former boss, Paul Howard. Willis campaigned on building leniency programs for some low-level offenders, but also adopted a hard line on violent crime and gang activity. “Anybody that thinks they can unleash insults from a podium and that’s going to shake Fani Willis is sorely mistaken."

Aug 15 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump was indicted on Monday for his alleged efforts to illegally overturn the Georgia vote in the 2020 presidential election which put Joe Biden in the White House. After defendants in Georgia are indicted by a grand jury, they are arraigned, which is the formal reading in court of the charges. Trump will have his mugshot taken upon being taken into custody, Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat told local media this month. A jury of 12 people from Fulton County must all agree beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump is guilty for a conviction on any count. If Trump is convicted, he would likely seek a new trial by asserting the outcome was inconsistent with evidence or contrary to the law.

In a video posted by Vice, Clarke addressed Clearlink's return-to-office mandate and said that many of his remote workers didn't open their laptops for a month. Online therapy fills a critical need — but it has a dark side. The data Loris used to create its "empathetic" software was generated from text conversations with people in distress, sourced from Loris' parent company, Crisis Text Line, a nonprofit suicide-prevention hotline. That is, however, according to Musk, who told Tucker Carlson that the two tech billionaires disagreed on safety and regulation. The real reason bosses are freaked out by remote work: they think it's for "sissies."
The deal, which also included Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts and New Mexico, means that San Francisco-based Juul has now settled with 45 states for more than $1 billion. The various states had accused Juul of falsely marketing its e-cigarettes as less addictive than cigarettes and targeted minors with glamorous advertising campaigns. It previously reached a $439 million settlement with 34 states and territories, as well as settlements with several individual states. As of December, its share of Juul was valued at $250 million, down from $12.8 billion in 2018. The CDC also has said using nicotine in adolescence may raise the risk for future addiction to other drugs.
The tech industry has now lost an entire generation of trailblazing women leaders and replaced them mostly with men. And in the wake of the pandemic, women leaders in corporate America more broadly are more likely than ever to quit, according to the most recent Women in the Workplace report from McKinsey & Company and LeanIn.Org. Now that she’s departing, Big Tech is facing a new reckoning over its failure to promote and support women leaders, and what this could mean for the next generation of women in the industry. “Without women in the C-suite who have come before them, it could make this transition period tougher for next generation women leaders,” Kray said. “I think that what she achieved and what she modeled will be something that will live on beyond the fact that now we don’t have a female Big Tech CEO.”

REUTERS/Elijah NouvelageWASHINGTON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - A group representing major U.S. airlines on Wednesday blasted White House proposals on competition in the industry as "short-sighted" and said they would "drive-up costs and reduce choices" for consumers. The Biden administration has taken steps it says will inject more competition into the airline industry. A4A on Wednesday said "the White House should get the facts straight amid efforts to impose new policies and regulations on our nation’s aviation industry." The White House declined to comment.
Holiday meals were also more expensive, and food prices outpaced inflation throughout the year. But while some items saw massive double-digit increases in 2022, others were a deal. REUTERS/Elijah NouvelageWASHINGTON, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Airlines canceled more than 2,700 U.S. flights Thursday and Friday, disrupting holiday travel for thousands, as a powerful winter storm hit the United States. The extreme weather coincided with the start of a holiday travel season that could be one of the busiest ever. The Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday that the winter storm was bringing blizzard conditions to the Midwest with major travel disruptions expected in Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul. More than 1,830 U.S. flights had been canceled Thursday and another 900 flights for Friday were scrapped, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Last year's holiday period was marred by an outbreak of COVID-19 among staff that forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights.

This is the latest in a series of rules the Biden administration has proposed to boost airline consumer protections. "Airline passengers deserve to know the full, true cost of their flights before they buy a ticket," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Last month, Buttigieg told Reuters airline rules were in need of a "refresh." In July 2021, USDOT proposed rules to require airlines to refund fees for significantly delayed bags and refunds for services like onboard Wi-Fi that do not work. Under existing U.S. rules, passengers are entitled to a fee refund if bags are lost, but not when delayed.
