Welcome to the Great Internet Splintering

But instead of spelling the death of social media, it may be the beginning of a better era. Welcome to the Great Social Media Splintering. One recent study found social media could cause an increase in eating disorders and poor body image in men and women. The fatigue I have felt is therefore partly fueled by another, more-pressing concern: Which social network should I bank on? But until it emerges, I expect to continue living a splintered and nomadic online social life.

And I'm not alone: People are spending less and less time on social media. But instead of spelling the death of social media, it may be the beginning of a better era. Welcome to the Great Social Media Splintering. One recent study found social media could cause an increase in eating disorders and poor body image in men and women. Studies have found that news overload from social media can cause stress, anxiety, fatigue, and lack of sleep.

AdvertisementAdvertisementWhen numbers take overThe 10,000-step benchmark has generally been the baseline goal for smartphone apps and fitness trackers. When the Fitbit tracker launched in 2009, 45 years after Yamasa's gadget cemented the 10,000-steps ideal in the public consciousness, it kick-started a boom in fitness wearables and spawned a frenzy for health data. This flood of easily accessible health data has certainly had some positive effects. Many fitness-tracking products also incorporate social-sharing features, which can give us a better perspective on how our exercise habits stack up against our friends', providing a little healthy competition as motivation. Many health- and fitness-tracking apps and wearables issue notifications throughout the day to urge their users toward their movement goals.

The government says the online safety bill passed this week will make Britain the safest place in the world to be online. Here's a closer look at Britain's law:WHAT IS THE ONLINE SAFETY LAW? The government says the law takes a “zero tolerance” approach to protecting kids by making platforms legally responsible for their online safety. Senior managers at tech companies also face criminal prosecution and prison time if they fail to answer information requests from U.K. regulators. The law also sets up a clash between the British government and tech companies over encryption technology.

California's legislature unanimously passed Piqui's Law, named after a 5-year-old murdered by his father following a custody dispute. This week, the California legislature passed that bill, known as "Piqui's Law." In cases where fathers countered by claiming alienation, judges were even less likely to credit mothers, she found. A good treatment option for indigestion may already be in your spice rack, according to a new study. Researchers found no significant differences in the symptoms of the groups taking the drug, turmeric or the combination of the two, according to the study. Turmeric has been used by people in Southeast Asia to treat stomach discomfort and other inflammatory conditions, Pongpirul said. That said, curcumin and turmeric is “generally considered safe when consumed in the amounts typically found in food,” he added. Typically, turmeric spices contain around 3% curcumin, according to the National Library of Medicine.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia can resume enforcing a ban on hormone replacement therapy for transgender people under 18, a judge ruled Tuesday, putting her previous order blocking the ban on hold after a federal appeals court allowed Alabama to enforce a similar restriction. The 11th Circuit panel's ruling last month said Alabama can implement a ban on the use of puberty blockers and hormones to treat transgender children. Political Cartoons View All 1145 ImagesThe Georgia law, Senate Bill 140, allows doctors to prescribe puberty-blocking medications, and it allows minors who are already receiving hormone therapy to continue. But it bans any new patients under 18 from starting hormone therapy. The injunction was sought by several transgender children, parents and a community organization in a lawsuit challenging the ban.

Our study suggests that both ADHD and major depressive disorder are risk factors for suicide attempt,” Freuer said in an email. Instead, “the increased risk for anorexia nervosa can be attributed entirely to ADHD,” Freuer said. Researchers looked for a link between ADHD and seven mental health conditions: anorexia nervosa, anxiety, bipolar disorder, major depression, PTSD, schizophrenia and at least one suicide attempt. “Also on the list are Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, substance use disorders, eating disorders, learning disabilities and sleep dysfunction,” he added. Both children have the same biological disorder — ADHD — but different environments will uncover different symptoms such as anxiety or depression, Greenblatt said.

New York CNN —YouTube announced Tuesday that it will start removing false claims about cancer treatments as part of an ongoing effort to build out its medical misinformation policy. Under the updated policy, YouTube will prohibit “content that promotes cancer treatments proven to be harmful or ineffective, or content that discourages viewers from seeking professional medical treatment,” Dr. Garth Graham, head of YouTube Health, said in a blog post Tuesday. As part of the announcement, YouTube is rolling out a broader updated medical misinformation policy framework that will consider content in three categories: prevention, treatment and denial. YouTube says its restrictions on cancer treatment misinformation will go into effect on Tuesday and enforcement will ramp up in the coming weeks. YouTube also plans to promote cancer-related content from the Mayo Clinic and other authoritative sources.

CNN —The weight loss drug Wegovy was shown to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke or heart disease-related death by 20% in a major clinical trial in people with cardiovascular disease, the first to show a weight loss drug alone can have such protective effects. It called the five-year trial “Select.”The finding of a 20% reduction in heart risk is higher than many experts had anticipated. A similar trial for the type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic, which uses the same ingredient, semaglutide, previously showed it could reduce cardiovascular risk by 26% — but no trial had yet shown a risk reduction in people without diabetes. It said it will present detailed results from the trial at a scientific conference later this year. It’s awaiting US Food and Drug Administration approval for weight loss as well.

More than 150 athletes, including Biles, said that the former USA Gymnastics team doctor sexually abused them under the guise of providing medical treatment. “I think this just really shows the lack of leadership of USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic Committee.”However, there is hope that a brighter future is in store for USA Gymnastics.

SCAFFOLD DANCINGPeople performed modern dance routines that included dangling from scaffolding above the pope as they moved a large cross around a structure that resembled a construction site. When the meditation about climate change was read, they donned gas masks as white smoke simulating air pollution engulfed the scaffolding. [1/2] A selection of injector pens for the Wegovy weight loss drug are shown in this photo illustration in Chicago, Illinois, U.S., March 31, 2023. The global market for weight-loss drugs is forecast to reach as much as $100 billion within the decade. Beyond severe mental health disorders, other patients struggling with obesity tend to suffer from mental health issues like depression and anxiety at higher levels than the general population, studies show. However, psychiatrists specializing in eating disorders are wary that drugs like Wegovy could exacerbate their patients’ focus on weight loss because they are so effective. Dr. Michael Weintraub, an endocrinologist at NYU Langone Health, said ideally psychiatrists will work with endocrinologists because weight-loss drugs require careful monitoring not related to mental health issues.

It was July 2022, and the prospect of giving birth to a girl in the United States was fraught. The Supreme Court had just overturned Roe v. Wade — a ruling that made me fear for my daughter’s future and her ability to determine her own destiny. And yet I’ve spent decades of my life avoiding and restricting it according to rigid rules of my own design. I find food terrifying and had long been afraid of passing that fear along to a future daughter. While plenty of men suffer from eating disorders, patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are overwhelmingly female.

Big Tech companies also prey on ordinary users. It’s time to rein in Big Tech. In 1975 the Nuclear Regulatory Commission took on nuclear power, and in 1977 the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission took on electric generation and transmission. We need a nimble, adaptable, new agency with expertise, resources and authority to do the same for Big Tech. Our legislation would guarantee common-sense safeguards for everyone who uses tech platforms.

But Coleman is one of nearly two dozen parents who told CNN that they are grappling with a different but related issue: teens using social media to diagnose themselves with mental health conditions. Some parents said social media has helped their teens get mental health information they’ve needed and has helped them feel less alone. According to Hamlet, social media companies should tweak algorithms to better detect when users are consuming too much content about a specific topic. Meanwhile, Mary Spadaro Daikos from upstate New York feels mixed about her daughter using social media for reasons related to her autism diagnosis. “She’s doing a lot of self-discovery right now in so many areas, and social media is a big part of that,” she said.

As the coronavirus pandemic dragged through its second year, an increasing number of American families were so desperate to get help for depressed or suicidal children that they brought them to emergency rooms. A large-scale analysis of private insurance claims shows that this surge in acute mental health crises was driven largely by a single group — girls aged 13 to 17. During the second year of the pandemic, there was a 22 percent increase in teenage girls who visited emergency rooms with a mental health emergency compared with a prepandemic baseline, with rises in patients with suicidal behavior and eating disorders, according to the study of 4.1 million patients published on Wednesday in JAMA Psychiatry. During the same period, March 2021 to March 2022, the records showed a 9 percent drop in teenage boys who made emergency room visits for mental health problems.

People often feel a pressure to look a certain way to have a “bikini body” or “summer body,” said Ally Duvall, senior program development lead at Equip, an online center for eating disorder treatment. Duvall shares how to leave the body image issues at home when packing for your summer getaway. Ally Duvall said the shame that comes with not meeting body image expectations for the summer can be tied with eating disorders. Trying to have our body look a certain way is not something that a majority of people can do safely. It makes sense that when we are faced with summer, we feel a lot of apprehension, or we are hyperfixating on how our body looks.

Videos posted on the young influencer’s account showing her running and weight-lifting were shared heavily on Chinese social media and also appeared in various state media outlets following her death late last month. State media outlets said that the influencer’s family had received “compensation” from the weight loss camp in Shaanxi, but did not say how much. In China, as in much of Asia and the rest of the world, social media is awash with unhealthy and unrealistic trends promoting extreme weight loss. One notorious recent social media trend in China involved women posing behind vertical sheets of printer paper to prove their waists were so thin they could not be seen either side. Zhou’s death has also increased scrutiny of the social media influencer industry more generally.

The idea behind a chatbot project funded by the National Eating Disorders Association was that technology could be unleashed to help people seeking guidance about eating behaviors, available around the clock. Their creation was named Tessa, and the organization invited people to chat with it in an Instagram post last year, describing it as “a wellness chatbot, helping you build resilience and self-awareness by introducing coping skills at your convenience.” In March, the organization said it would shut down a human-staffed helpline and let the bot stand on its own. But when Alexis Conason, a psychologist and eating disorder specialist, tested the chatbot, she found reason for concern. Ms. Conason told it that she had gained weight “and really hate my body,” specifying that she had “an eating disorder,” in a chat she shared on social media. Tessa still recommended the standard advice of noting “the number of calories” and adopting a “safe daily calorie deficit” — which, Ms. Conason said, is “problematic” advice for a person with an eating disorder.
