The Columbus Blue Jackets fired general manager Jarmo Kekalainen on Thursday, ending his time on the job after more than a decade. President of hockey operations John Davidson made the call midway through Kekalainen’s 11th full season on the job and three weeks before the trade deadline. Davidson and the hockey operations team will assume GM duties on an interim basis until a full-time replacement is hired. (AP) — A Louisiana State University football player was arrested Thursday and charged with attempted second-degree murder after a shooting last week that wounded two people. Treyvion Antwan Holly, a freshman running back, faces three charges — attempted second-degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property and illegal use of a weapon on a public roadway, the Union Parish Sheriff said in a press release Thursday evening. Jordan Ramond Jones, 18, was charged with attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of weapons. A 16-year-old boy was also charged with attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, aggravated criminal damage to property and illegal possession of handgun by a juvenile. A spokesperson for Louisiana State University could not immediately be reached for comment.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly has been suspended five games for cross-checking Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig in the final seconds of the teams' game over the weekend. CNN —Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid is set to undergo surgery to deal with a left knee issue, the team announced on Sunday. “Joel Embiid will have a corrective procedure this week to address an injury to the lateral meniscus in his left knee. Embiid has spent time out of the Philadelphia lineup this season as result of persistent injury issues and has missed 14 out of the 76ers’ 48 games. The Cameroonian was recently named to his seventh career All-Star team, but it appears that he will miss this month’s festivities in Indianapolis.
