Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London CNN —On an unseasonably warm autumnal morning in East London, Mary Beth Schumen and her husband have made an early start to their Sunday. Yet on London’s underground, the Schumens are not the only ones in Bills blue. “It’s another feeling to be live in the stadium,” he tells CNN Sport in anticipation of his third London-based NFL game. Fireworks light up the sky before the start of the second international NFL game of the 2023 season. Ultimately, it was back-to-back London wins for the Jaguars who are now, like the Bills, 3-2 for the season.

London CNN —London’s office market has plunged into a “rental recession,” with the share of empty space hitting its highest level in three decades, investment bank Jefferies said in a note Wednesday. Packing upOn Monday, British Land said Meta had agreed to pay £149 million ($181 million) to break its lease on a 310,000-square-foot office near London’s Regent’s Park. More bankers are reportedly leaving the area as UBS (UBS) begins relocating staff working for Credit Suisse to its main London office in the City. Regulators have been watching the commercial real estate market closely for any sign that spiraling vacancy rates and falling rents could become the source of the next financial crisis. The downturn in office rentals stands in stark contrast to London’s residential rental market where demand is high and supply chronically low.

Adidas, its bigger rival Nike and other sports brands, have been locked in a "supershoe" war for years, since the first running shoes containing a thick, shock-absorbing foam and carbon fibre plate helping athletes run more efficiently, were released. At $500 a pair, the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1 cost $225 more than Nike's equivalent Alphafly 2, raising the question of how many amateur runners will swallow the extra cost. "The price tag is just insane," said Harry Swinhoe, founder of Grove Lane Runners, an amateur running club in southeast London. "This is a shoe optimized for speed, versus durability," Adidas said. Assefa broke the world record by more than 2 minutes to finish in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 53 seconds.

NINETEEN STEPS, by Millie Bobby Brown with Kathleen McGurlOn the evening of Wednesday, March 3, 1943, 173 men, women and children lost their lives descending the steps — 19 of them — to an underground air raid shelter in East London. It was the largest civilian tragedy of the war and yet it was a mystery how it happened. However, after all that East London had endured during the Blitz, to be blamed for panicking at this point was intolerable and unfair. The residents of Bethnal Green demanded an inquiry. I first learned of the Bethnal Green tube station disaster almost 25 years ago when I was living in London.

Are you in love, or are you merely experiencing a giddy dopamine rush? Is there a true, innermost “you” that is distinguishable from your neurochemistry? “The Effect” revolves around two young people, Tristan and Connie, who take part in a trial for a dopamine-based psychiatric drug with powerful antidepressant properties. Throughout the study, the participants are monitored by two psychiatric doctors, Lorna and Toby, who debate their findings: Is the drug pulling their subjects together, or are their feelings organic? And if one of the trial participants was actually receiving a placebo the whole time, what then?

In Opera, Clocks Take the Spotlight
  + stars: | 2023-08-09 | by ( David Belcher | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“At times I get up in the middle of the night and stop all the clocks. All of them,” an aging princess sings in “Der Rosenkavalier,” Richard Strauss’s sprawling opera of love, devotion and loss. But this year several productions around the world have been using clocks in their set designs, either as a subtle background item or so central that the timepiece seems like a character itself. Perhaps the opera most connected with clocks is “L’heure espagnole” (“Spanish Time”), Maurice Ravel’s one-act farce about a neurotic clockmaker and his unfaithful wife. It is being staged Aug. 22-26 at the Grimeborn Opera Festival in East London — with a twist.

London CNN —A graffiti wall in London’s bustling street art hub of Brick Lane has become an unlikely canvas for protest messages against China’s authoritarian rule, after it was whitewashed and painted over with propaganda slogans promoting Chinese Communist Party ideology. On Chinese social media, some supporters argued the young Chinese artists were exercising freedom of expression and applauded them for “exporting” Chinese culture and values. By Sunday, the slogans had been overlaid with a flurry of new graffiti that was deeply critical of both Xi and the Chinese Communist Party. A grafitti wall in Brick Lane was whitewashed and painted over with red slogans promoting China's "core socialist values." There’s no one leader or anything, but everybody’s expressing their dissenting views against the Chinese Communist Party,” he said.

The Barclays headquarters building is seen in the Canary Wharf business district of east London February 6, 2013. REUTERS/Neil Hall/File PhotoLONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - British bank Barclays (BARC.L) is weighing up whether to move its continental Europe headquarters from Dublin to Paris, in a potential further boon for the French capital as it seeks to expand as a global financial centre after Brexit. Barclays said in an interim earnings filing for its Barclays Bank Ireland business - known internally as Barclays Europe -that it was exploring switching its European Union headquarters in order to "be closer to the balance of operations" of the division on the continent. Any potential move by Barclays would result in a "small number of roles" moving to Paris, the document said, adding initial engagement with regulators and other stakeholders was underway. It would also not impact the group's UK activities, it added, where the bank's global headquarters are in London.

Today, the roughly 230 open-air booksellers, stationed along the Seine for about two miles, make up the largest open-air book market in Europe. About 170 of the stalls will be required to close for at least two weeks during the Paris Games, according to a copy of a document that city officials showed bouquinistes at a meeting last month. After the empty arenas of the Olympics in Tokyo, postponed to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, and in Beijing in 2022, organizers in Paris are aiming to bring back grandeur to the Games, which begin July 26. In Paris, with its perfectly preserved mid-19th-century facades, there is more concern about preserving traditions and elements of the city during the Olympic Games than in other cities. The city allows bouquinistes to sell rent-free, but some have had to resort to selling cheap souvenirs rather than books to earn a living.

She gave up her six-figure salary to retrain as a teacher and set up the charity Now Teach. My mum was a great school teacher and when she died when I was in my forties I briefly thought about becoming a teacher like her. Ten years later when my dad died, I thought I needed to do something radical with the time I had left of my working life. So for me to leave readers with the impression that my life is like "Dead Poets Society" couldn't be further from the truth. I knew from writing about working life that many people in their fifties who were lawyers or worked in other corporate roles get bored with it and want to do something more useful.

LONDON, July 27 (Reuters) - A former Barclays (BARC.L) director who was fired for sexual harassment has lost an employment lawsuit against the British bank in which he sought nearly 600,000 pounds ($770,000) in compensation, a London tribunal announced on Thursday. He argued at the East London Employment Tribunal in March that female colleagues fabricated allegations against him and that his dismissal was unfair. But his complaints of unfair dismissal, breach of contract and sex discrimination were rejected on July 10, according to a summary of the tribunal's findings published on Thursday. Barclays and Record's lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But Barclays said Record's dismissal was fair based on disciplinary findings including "unwelcome physical contact with a female colleague" and sexual harassment, filings showed.
