Hong Kong CNN —She appeared to be a beautiful woman and in the minds of men across Asia, the video calls they spoke on confirmed their newfound love was real. But Hong Kong police say the men had fallen prey to a romance scam that used deepfake artificial intelligence to lure its victims into parting with more than $46 million. In a news conference Monday, police in the Asian financial hub announced the arrests of more than two dozen members of the alleged scam ring, which they say targeted men from Taiwan to Singapore and as far away as India. But increasingly realistic deepfake technology has raised the stakes and put authorities on high alert. According to Hong Kong police, the romance gang’s deepfake scam typically began with a text message, in which the sender – posing as an attractive woman – said they had mistakenly added the wrong number.

Since then, I've been to 86 countries and have learned how to travel on a budget. I book directly with local businesses and I embrace public transportation, among other things. Now, 20 years later, I've visited 86 countries on a shoestring budget. It feels more ethical, too, as our money went straight to people living by the river instead of a tour company based elsewhere. If that is the case, make sure to book the tours while you're in the country, as it will save you money.

However, despite the measures, which have mainly focused on monetary policy, the World Bank's 2025 growth projection was unchanged from earlier projections. The international lender estimated that China's growth rate would drop to 4.3% next year, down from a projected 4.8% in 2024, in an economic update on Tuesday. China's economic growth rate is expected to decline further in 2025 despite a temporary boost from recent stimulus measures, according to the World Bank. The World Bank has long advocated for China to boost its growth through bold policy actions such as unleashing competition, upgrading infrastructure, and reforming education. "For three decades, China's growth has spilled over beneficially to its neighbors, but the size of that impetus is now diminishing," the World Bank said in its Tuesday report.

Meanwhile, the People's Republic of China, which governs mainland China from Beijing under leader Xi Jinping, celebrated its 75th birthday on October 1. Advertisement"Therefore, in terms of age, it is definitely impossible for the People's Republic of China to become the motherland of the people of the Republic of China," Lai said. "On the contrary, the Republic of China may actually be the motherland of the people over 75 years old in the People's Republic of China," Lai continued as his audience applauded and cheered.

More than 90% of travelers from Southeast Asia say that gun prevalence in the United States influences whether they will visit, according to a new survey. However, nearly 80% said the likelihood that they would attend a mass gathering — such as a concert or music festival — would be greatly or moderately affected by the number of guns in the United States. Half of those surveyed said they have been to the United States. But a prior visit didn't calm Singaporeans' worries about gun violence to the same extent as other nationalities. Another 5% said they will out-and-out refuse to visit if Trump wins, with 2% saying the same about a Harris win.

The C919 is China’s first homegrown mainline passenger plane, manufactured by the Shanghai-based state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). Steven Jiang/CNNI was happy to hear the flight attendant highlight the aircraft type in his pre-takeoff briefing. “Today you’re flying with Air China C919 aircraft, which is the first large airliner independently developed by China,” he said, as the jet taxied to the runway. Air China serves hot meals in economy during meal hours even for short-haul flights (today’s flying time: 1 hour 40 minutes). As far as my passenger expectation goes, this C919 flight has earned a solid B in terms of safety and comfort.

A level playing field produces better products and services," Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Romeo Lumagui said in a statement. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr signed into law on Wednesday the imposition of VAT on non-resident digital service providers such as streaming services and online search engines. The Philippines will impose a 12% value-added tax on digital services offered by tech giants such as Amazon , Netflix , Disney , and Alphabet , in a move that will level the playing field with domestic brick and mortar players, the internal revenue agency said on Thursday. Only domestic digital service providers are now subject to paying the 12% VAT, the agency said. Digital services provided by foreign firms are considered rendered in the Philippines if the digital services are consumed in the Southeast Asian nation, the revenue agency said.

Phnom Penh AP —A Cambodian woman who worked as a maid in Malaysia has been deported to her homeland for comments she posted on social media criticizing Cambodian government leaders, in the latest example of a Southeast Asian government helping another arrest a dissident. Nuon Toeun is neither an opposition leader nor a well-known activist. Radio Free Asia said Nuon Toeun was a supporter of the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party, which was dissolved ahead of the 2018 general election as part of a crackdown on the opposition. The Khmer Movement for Democracy, a movement formed by opposition leaders in exile, condemned Nuon Toeun’s deportation from Malaysia. TOKYO — Japan’s new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Tuesday unveiled his cabinet as he seeks to heal party divisions and secure a national mandate with an Oct. 27 snap election. The 67-year-old former defense minister, who last week won a close-fought contest to lead the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was confirmed earlier in the day as prime minister by parliament. In his victory speech on Friday, Ishiba spoke about the need to beef up Japan’s security after recent territorial incursions by Chinese and Russian military vessels. Five of the lawmakers who contested the leadership race with him have not been included in his government nor given key party jobs. But despite its troubles, the LDP, which has ruled Japan for most of the post-war era, remains likely to hold on to power in the upcoming election given Japan’s weak opposition.

As Microsoft investors get ready for quarterly earnings this month, there's one particular metric that's become increasingly important: finance leases. Overall, Microsoft made $19 billion in capital expenditures in the latest quarter. "It's an insane ramp," said Charles Fitzgerald, a former Microsoft manager who writes about capital expenditures on his blog Platformonomics. Investors will get further clarity on Microsoft's lease finances when the company reports fiscal first-quarter results in late October. Executives at Microsoft and other top tech companies have approved higher capital expenditures in the past two years, often to boost their performance in generative AI.

Some expat Indians are moving back home to launch companies of their own. But the chaos, where even established startups are trying and failing, makes India a fair playing field for new entrants, Hassan said. Programs like Startup India, which provides founders benefits like tax exemption, easier compliance, and funding support, have made creating a company smoother. Bhide returned to India in January, leaving behind about $580,000 in total compensation at ticketing platform StubHub. Bhide said the general sentiment among local founders is shifting from "Build from India" to "Build for India."
