Caleb McGillvary, known as Kai, may have been among the first so-called milkshake ducks, a term for a noncelebrity who delights the internet, only to fall from grace. In 2013, he was interviewed for an on-the-scene news segment in which he recounted how he had intervened to stop a crime while hitchhiking in Fresno, Calif. The video, where he is referenced as “Kai, the Homeless Hitchhiker With a Hatchet” quickly went viral, and McGillvary — a goofy, charismatic, eccentric vagabond — was hailed as a hero.

So if you’re planning to be in the market this year, here’s what to expect this spring — and how to be ready to pounce. Don’t wait for better prices or ratesLast year was the least affordable housing market since the 1980’s as mortgage rates spiked to 23-year highs at the end of October. But a slightly brighter season is dawning this spring. This spring is offering a bit of rate and price stability said Betty Jans, an Annapolis, Maryland-based real estate agent. “If you wait, and all of the sudden we have a little dip in rates, you’re going to be competing with everyone else that wants to buy then, too,” Jans said.

"Interest rates took the elevator going up; they're going to take the stairs coming down," McBride said. As the Fed goes into its first Federal Open Market Committee meeting of 2024, here's what that elevator ride up has looked like over the last 12 months in five major consumer categories: credit cards, savings accounts, certificates of deposit, auto loans and mortgages. Credit cardsNowhere has that express rate elevator been more obvious than with credit cards. Even as the Fed slowed the pace of increases over the last 12 months, the average APR for credit cards rose more than a full percentage point. He cautions, however, that buying a car is still a major expense, regardless of what interest rates are.

That allowed Biden the political space to mete out U.S. retaliation, inflicting costs on Iran-backed forces without risking a direct war with Tehran. Republicans accused Biden of letting American forces become sitting ducks, waiting for the day when a drone or missile would evade base defenses. In response, they say Biden must strike Iran. "The only answer to these attacks must be devastating military retaliation against Iran's terrorist forces, both in Iran and across the Middle East." "Unless the U.S. prepared for an all out war, what does attacking Iran get us," the official said.

As my birthday rolled around that fall, the idea of writing a haiku a day was simply a way of promising myself that that day, I’d steady myself make note of — ha — just one thing. California poultry farms are implementing strict biosecurity measures to curb the spread of the disease. So we’ve got to be as vigilant as possible to protect our birds,” said Bill Mattos, president of the California Poultry Federation. Climate change is increasing the risk of outbreaks as changing weather patterns disrupt the migratory patterns of wild birds, Pitesky said. For example, exceptional rainfall last year created new waterfowl habitat throughout California, including areas close to poultry farms. “I’m very concerned because this avian flu is transmitted by wild birds, and there’s no way I can stop the wild birds from coming through and leaving the disease behind,” Peterson said.

According to Cruising Ducks, the rubber duck scavenger hunt started in 2018 when a 10-year-old passenger on the Carnival Breeze cruise hid 50 ducks aboard the ship. The fad became so popular that there are now entire Facebook groups dedicated to sharing photos of rubber ducks discovered on cruises and their hiding places. "Let me tell you, they are not shy about sucking the whole pool down right into the ocean and then sucking up some new water," Sebastian added.

The duck stamp act incident of early 2024 sets up two new funding deadlines on March 1 and March 8. Short-term funding bills that keep the lights on are clearly not how the massive US government is supposed to be run. There’s been least one short-term spending bill in all but three fiscal years since 1977, according to the Congressional Research Service. Why use the duck stamp bill to fund the government? Spending bills are supposed to begin in the House, and so to make this latest stopgap measure work, senators substituted the spending bill into a House-passed bill originally having to do with the duck stamp, making it possible for duck hunters to carry an electronic as opposed to paper duck stamp during the “taking of waterfowl.”Fear not for the duck hunters.

France puts country on 'high' alert for bird flu
  + stars: | 2023-12-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
PARIS, Dec 5 (Reuters) - France raised the risk level of bird flu to 'high' from 'moderate' on Tuesday after the detection of new cases of the disease, forcing poultry farms to keep birds indoors to stem the spread of the highly contagious virus. Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has led to the culling of hundreds of millions birds worldwide in recent years. France said last week that it had detected a first bird flu outbreak on a farm this season in Brittany, in the northwest of the country. The "high" risk level implies that all poultry should be kept inside on farms and additional security measures taken to avoid a spread of the disease. Vice President Kamala Harris speaks during the New York Times annual DealBook summit on November 29, 2023 in New York City. Vice President Kamala Harris refused to speak Wednesday about two hot-button issues — TikTok regulation and the promotion by Elon Musk of an antisemitic conspiracy — despite the fact that the White House has taken strong stances on both topics. The vice president likewise ducked questions about Musk, the mega-billionaire head of Tesla , SpaceX, and X, the social media site where he recently boosted the antisemitic claim. The vice president's tight-lipped evasion Wednesday starkly contrasted with how vocal the White House has been on both TikTok and the Musk controversy. At the time of the post, however, the White House blasted Musk for appearing to support antisemitism on social media.
