☆ Martin Stolar, Lawyer Who Fought for Social Justice, Dies at 81

Martin R. Stolar, a prominent civil rights lawyer who in the early 1970s defended war resisters and inmates who rebelled at Attica prison, as well as initiating a landmark case restraining the New York Police Department from spying on left-wing activists, died on July 1 in Manhattan. His wife, Elsie Chandler, said he died in a hospital after suffering heart failure while awaiting surgery for a broken hip. Mr. Stolar was one of a generation of idealistic lawyers who, inspired by the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements, forsook lucrative careers to lend their expertise to social justice causes. “He had a practice that not only defended needy people, it propelled social movements,” said Franklin Siegel, a Distinguished Lecturer at the City University of New York School of Law, who knew Mr. Stolar for nearly six decades.

CNN —Reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian has won Iran’s presidential election, Iranian state news agency Press TV reported Saturday citing the country’s election headquarters, beating his hardline rival in a pivotal vote at a time of tensions at home and abroad. The first round saw the lowest voter turnout for a presidential election since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979. The lawmaker was the only reformist candidate vying for the top elected seat in the country after dozens of other candidates were barred from running. Part of that case was that our political system is governed by a gerontocracy that evokes the age of Leonid Brezhnev and Yuri Andropov. After watching Joe Biden’s performance on the debate stage, I think Ferguson can claim that point as proven. His essay folded the gerontocracy argument into a larger case that exemplifies what you might call conservative doomerism. In general there is more doomerism on the American left today than on the right — both more personal pessimism and more anxiety about various apocalypses, from climate change to Trumpian authoritarianism.
