Discovery teamed up with Disney to create an anticipated Max-Hulu-Disney+ bundle, which launched in late July for $17 per month. AdvertisementThere were less than 2 million net streaming subscribers additions in the US in Q2, according to Antenna. In August, Hulu's cancellation rate rose to its highest level since January, and Max's churn rate jumped to its highest mark since November. AdvertisementWhen taken in the context of Antenna's other data, it looks like some Hulu and Max customers are canceling their subscriptions so they can subscribe to the Max-Hulu-Disney+ bundle without paying twice. Discovery to form sports streaming service Venu, which promised to offer access to tons of live sports at less than half the cost of traditional cable bundles. Unlike ESPN+, this service will have all of ESPN's content, including Monday Night Football games and shows like "First Take." Disney is doing everything it can to make sure it's not in the same boat — hence its investments in projects like Venu and ESPN Flagship. Despite that drawback, Nollen is optimistic about ESPN Flagship. If ESPN Flagship hits those milestones, it can fully offset the losses from pay TV, which it will — ironically — be partially responsible for.

The Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse float passes by during the daily Festival of Fantasy Parade at the Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World on May 31, 2024, in Orlando, Florida. The Walt Disney Company will no longer use Slack for in-house company communication months after a hack that involved more than a terabyte of company data being leaked to the public. Representatives from Disney and Salesforce, the owner of Slack, did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. "Companies also have to take the right measure to prevent phishing attacks and to lockdown their employees' social engineering," he added. Benioff noted that Disney continues to use Salesforce products in other aspects of its business including its Disney store, Disney guides, sales and service operations and its call centers.

Disney's networks went dark on Sept. 1 after the two sides could not agree to terms on fees and bundle structures. DirecTV called Disney anti-consumer, and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro called the responses DirecTV made to Disney's package offers "basically hypotheticals." The amount of customers DirecTV lost during the dispute was not "immaterial," said DirecTV Chief Marketing Officer Vince Torres at Goldman Sachs' Communacopia & Technology Conference on Thursday. DirecTV offered its customers a $30 credit, financed by stopping payments to Disney as soon as the blackout began, Torres said. This was the second dispute in a year that left pay TV customers without Disney's networks.

Disney and DirecTV are not likely to reach a deal in time for "Monday Night Football" according to people familiar with the matter. Thanks to some anthropomorphic emotions and a bad-mouthed, fourth-wall breaking antihero, the domestic summer box office scraped together $3.6 billion in ticket sales. Box office analysts and cinema owners braced themselves a few months ago for the possibility that the summer movie season could be the worst showing in a decade. But it wasn't until mid-June that the box office got a proper surge of moviegoers. Through Labor Day, the film was the highest-grossing summer movie with $650 million in box office receipts. Box office analysts foresee the summer's momentum carrying over into the fall, ultimately bolstering the overall third-quarter box office results.

In fiscal 2022 and 2023 combined, Disney's experiences unit, which houses the parks, generated 67.5% of the company's operating income. That represents a significant deceleration in growth from its first and second quarters, when operating income rose 8% and 12%, respectively. Nispel argued that negative sentiment around Disney's theme parks performance could be a reason to have less conviction on the stock in the near term. The more excitement around its movies, the more interest in everything from theme parks to streaming services to branded merchandise.
