Evergrande liquidation: Here’s what may happen next

But there is still little clarity over how the liquidation of Evergrande will unfold. That’s because the legal systems of Hong Kong and China remain distinct, despite Beijing’s growing control over the former British colony in recent years. No Chinese company as huge as Evergrande — which was once China’s second largest developer— has been wound up by a Hong Kong court. Hui Ka Yan, chairman of property developer China Evergrande. Since then, Evergrande has been building and selling apartments in mainland China, even though it has been unable to repay its debts.

Malaysia Installs Sultan Ibrahim of Johor State as New King

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's Sultan Ibrahim from the southern state of Johor was sworn in as the country's new king on Wednesday, taking the oath of office in a ceremony at the national palace in Kuala Lumpur. The monarchy plays a mostly ceremonial role in Malaysia, but its influence has grown in recent years, prompting the king to wield rarely-used discretionary powers to quell political instability. Sultan Ibrahim, 65, succeeds Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, who is returning to lead his home state of Pahang after completing his five-year tenure as king. While the monarchy is largely seen as above politics, Sultan Ibrahim has been noted for his forthrightness and outsized personality, often weighing in on the country's political issues. Known for his large collection of luxury cars and motorbikes, Sultan Ibrahim has wide-ranging business interests from real estate to mining, including a stake in Forest City - a $100-billion China-backed land reclamation and development project off Johor.

New York CNN —A group of developers wants to construct what would be America’s tallest building in an unlikely place: Oklahoma City. The skyscraper would be more than double the height of Oklahoma City’s tallest building now and the fifth-tallest building in the world. Between 2010 and 2020, Oklahoma City was one of 14 US cities that added more than 100,000 people. A city’s population is also a strong indicator of how tall its tallest building will be. “It’s not fathomable to me that Oklahoma City is ready for a building like that.”CNN’s Andy Rose contributed to this article.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Norway’s minority center-left government and two large opposition parties made a deal Tuesday to open the Arctic Ocean to seabed mineral exploration despite warnings by environmental groups that it would threaten the biodiversity of the vulnerable ecosystems in the area. Norway said in June it wanted to open parts of the Norwegian continental shelf for commercial deep sea mining in line with the country’s strategy to seek new economic opportunities and reduce its reliance on oil and gas. “This is a disaster for the sea,” said Frode Pleym, head of the local chapter of Greenpeace. According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, there are sulphides and manganese crusts containing metals and minerals that are crucial for making batteries, wind turbines, PCs and mobile phones. The planned area is located southwest of the Arctic island of Svalbard.

The US Air Force is developing more dispersed bases to counter the threat posed by China's missiles. US engineers quickly began building what became the biggest and busiest air base of the war. "Air Force engineers are scheduled to remove the vegetation that have penetrated through the cracks and joints of the old pavement surfaces," Peden added. Money is allotted for work at Tindal air base — including $93 million to build a parking apron for six B-52 bombers — and Darwin air base, both of which are in Australia's Northern Territory. China's Powerlong Real Estate warns of debt default risk
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Nov 29 (Reuters) - Powerlong Real Estate (1238.HK) said on Wednesday its cash on hand and bank deposits would not be enough to cover existing and future debt, making it the latest Chinese property developer that could default. In an exchange filing, Powerlong also said it has not made an interest payment of $15.9 million under 5.95% senior notes due April 2025 issued by the company. China's property sector has been squeezed by a regulatory crackdown since 2020 as authorities curbed excessive debt, which tightened liquidity and raised default risks for developers. Powerlong Real Estate's interest became due and payable on Oct. 30 and the company had a grace period of 30 days to make the payment. Separately, Powerlong said it was working towards ensuring timely delivery of its property development projects to secure cash resources for sustainable development.

I didn’t know where to stand, where I would find the sign-up sheet or quite where to look when I spoke into the small microphone. But it doesn’t take long to fall in line with the rhythms of a municipal meeting. What first took me here was a collective effort to convince the Town Council to prohibit the use of gas-powered leaf blowers. Once, when a contentious meeting went late, someone, perhaps anticipating the rancor, passed out homemade cookies. REUTERS/Wolfgang Rattay/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 19 (Reuters) - Germany's Bayer (BAYGn.DE) has aborted a large late-stage trial testing a new anti-clotting drug due to lack of efficacy, dealing a fresh blow to the embattled drugmaker and throwing its most promising medium-term development project in doubt. The trial halt, which followed recommendation of independent trial supervisors, marks another setback for a company burdened by a weak herbicide business, high debt and by U.S. lawsuits over the alleged carcinogenic effect of its commonly used Roundup weedkiller. Bayer said it will further analyse the data of the discontinued trial, known as OCEANIC-AF, which was initiated in August 2022. It said the independent trial supervisors recommended the continuation of a separate phase III trial, OCEANIC-STROKE, testing asundexian to prevent repeated strokes in participants who have already suffered one.

CNN —Alphabet’s Google has scrapped a development deal to build $15 billion worth of homes, offices and retail space in California’s Silicon Valley. The announcement comes amid a period of deep cost-cutting and layoffs for Google and during a time when commercial real estate is faltering. Billion-dollar investmentsIn June 2019, Google made a $1 billion pledge to help develop more affordable housing in the increasingly unaffordable region. A month later, Google partnered with Lendlease to redevelop its landholdings for a 10- to 15-year project valued at $15 billion. Lending to commercial real estate developers and managers largely comes from small and mid-sized banks, where the pressure on liquidity has been most severe.
