Rep. George Santos insulted his potential Dem rival's chin during a heated Twitter exchange. The tweet backfired on Santos, who faced quick backlash and raised the profile of his opponent. "Corrective jaw surgery helped me breathe normally & saved my life," Josh Lafazan fired back. With Chicago, Democrats chose a 2024 convention site that signals the significance of the Midwest. But the city has also been at the center of Democrats' weakest spot with voters: crime. Crime was a defining issue of the city's latest mayoral election that upended the city's Democratic leadership. And Republicans have long hammered the city's crime rates to put Democrats on the defensive. "Chicago is a vibrant, metropolitan city with neighborhoods that reflect the diversity of America," said Natalie Edelstein, a spokesperson for the city's convention bid.
A North Carolina lawmaker is expected to switch parties in what would be a stunning turn of events. It would give the GOP a supermajority, meaning they could override the Dem governor's vetoes. As of March 2023, Cooper had issued 75 vetoes — more than all previous North Carolina governors combined — since taking office six years ago, according to The Assembly NC. From 2005 to 2009, Jerry Meek, whom Cotham married in late 2008, was the chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party. According to the North Carolina political blog Watauga Watch, Cotham and Meek are no longer married.

Biden says Republicans can help build a "significant majority" for Dem priorities in a GOP House. "It looks like it's Marjorie Taylor Greene and extreme MAGA Republicans," Rep. Pramila Jayapal said. They question whether they can work with House Republicans on anything beyond "must-pass" legislation when they say "extreme" GOP members seem to be leading the caucus. And you know, Marjorie Taylor Greene seems to be the lead spokesperson these days." "You're gonna have a lot of Republicans running our way," he told House Democrats on Wednesday night.
A Nebraska lawmaker promised to filibuster every bill introduced this session in order to block an abortion ban. At Thursday night's session, Cavanaugh was heard filibustering through Legislative Bill 147, KMTV reported, but she isn't stopping there. Another student used DALL·E to generate pictures in an essay about the role of women in the First World War. The AI didn't score more than a C."I would say that if you're getting C level answers from ChatGPT, you're asking the wrong question," Gademann adds. "Can you imagine a scenario where we're throwing millions and millions of dollars to find out if a student used a calculator in math homework in the '80s?"
The tumult that broke out last month during the election of Kevin McCarthy for speaker illustrated the potential for profound dysfunction in the new House Republican majority. Here is a closer look at the fractious House Republican caucus. Chart of House Republicans highlights members who denied the 2020 election results, were supported by the House Freedom Fund, or both. Representative Harriet Hageman of Wyoming, who has also denied the 2020 election results, defeated Representative Liz Cheney in the primary. A Venn diagram shows the Republican newcomers in the House who either denied the 2020 election results, were supported by the House Freedom Fund, or both.

Jan Schakowsky told Politico it was "seriously a mistake" and he should go back to explain why. Following Musk's visit, McCarthy told reporters: "He came to wish me a happy birthday," Bloomberg reported at the time. Democrats told Politico they were unimpressed at Musk arranging meetings only with conservatives.

An NYT report revealed that at least some of the GOP knew of Rep. George Santos' lies. "I guess unfortunately we rely on the person to be truthful to us," the GOP Nassau County chairman told The Times. According to the Times, Santos hired an unnamed Washington research firm to conduct a vulnerability study in connection to his campaign towards the end of 2021. But the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee failed to follow up on red flags when looking into Rep. George Santos because researchers were encumbered with other researching dozens of other candidates, per the Times. House Dem whip says caucus will keep voting in speaker race House Democratic whip Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Mass, said her caucus will stick around and continue voting in the speaker race. Davidson suggested there are "a couple procedural paths" where McCarthy could become speaker if Republicans changed the threshold needed to win the election. The polarization is too great.” Cole said that for all the House GOP divisions, “there’s no question” that most members in the caucus are closer in policy and vision to the anti-McCarthy rebels than they are to centrist Democrats. As Biden celebrated an upgrade to an aging bridge linking Kentucky and Ohio, House Republicans deadlocked on the basic task of electing a speaker, foreshadowing what is likely to be two years of infighting. The McCarthy-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund and the conservative Club for Growth agreed to not pick sides in some competitive House GOP primary races in exchange for supporting McCarthy's bid for speaker.
Several Republicans have cast their votes for Representative Byron Donalds of Florida. The only way Mr. McCarthy could still win on this ballot is if several members decide not to vote or if he gains Democratic support. Mr. McCarthy could win the speakership with fewer than 218 votes by persuading lawmakers who do not want to support him to instead vote “present” or to not vote at all. During the second vote, those same 19 opposed him but rallied around Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, a founding member of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus. How Every Representative Voted
He repeatedly attacked the media, leading UN experts to warn that Trump's rhetoric raised the risk of violence against journalists. Though President Joe Biden was the clear winner of the 2020 election, Trump refused to concede. Even as world leaders began to congratulate Biden, a major sign of Biden's legitimacy, Trump continued to deny reality. After the violence, Trump released a video acknowledging that a new administration would take over, but he did not explicitly concede. Every president prior to Trump allowed for a peaceful transition of power after they'd served two terms or lost an election.
The Dem-controlled House Ways & Means Committee will decide whether to release Trump's tax returns. Democrats have been working since 2015 to gain access to the former president's financial documents. Lawmakers on the committee are set to vote Tuesday whether to publicly release Trump's returns, which he kept confidential during his campaign and presidency in a buck of recent tradition. It was unclear when exactly the returns would be released if the committee decides to make them public. Democrats on the committee have long been working to gain access to the former president's financial documents spanning from 2015 to 2020, while Republicans have framed the Democrats' fight as politically-motivated.
Sen. Joe Manchin dodged questions about whether he will remain in the Democratic party. "I'll let you know later what I decide to do," Manchin told Margaret Brennan on CBS "Face the Nation." Brennan then asked Manchin if he saw any value in becoming an Independent and not being affiliated with a political party. "Now, I'll let you know later what I decide to do. Manchin's comments follow Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema's announcement earlier this month that she will leave the Democratic Party and register as an independent.

All of this is a direct result of the work Democrats have done in Congress and in the White House. While Democrats are moving America forward, Republicans are working to move our country and economy backward. Under President Biden's leadership, Democrats have grown our economy 3 times faster than when Republicans controlled Congress and the White House. This is what a pro-business, pro-worker, pro-economic growth party and economic plan look like. While Republicans look to the past, New Dems look to the future – and in about a week, Americans will decide between the two.
