New York CNN —The strike at Boeing by 33,000 members of the International Association of Machinists union, which reaches its seventh day today, has already cost the company and workers $572 million, according to an estimate from Anderson Economic Group. “The first week of losses for Boeing are substantial, but they’ll pale in comparison to what comes in the following weeks,” Anderson told CNN. The strike at Boeing (BA), on the other hand, has yet to have a measurable economic impact on airlines so far, Anderson said. The losses for workers, primarily the 33,000 union members who have gone on strike, as well as for suppliers come to about $117 million in the first week. The strike will also cost about $10 million in local losses, including at businesses near the plants, according to Anderson.

CNN —Ukraine’s electricity supply risks “severe disruptions” this winter, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned, urging Kyiv’s allies to help address the country’s energy security. Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with missiles and drones since its full-scale invasion in February 2022, but its bombardments have intensified recently, leaving the country in a precarious position as colder weather approaches. Ukraine has also attacked Russia’s energy infrastructure. In its report, the agency outlines 10 measures that Ukraine and its allies should implement to tackle risks to the country’s energy supply. She also noted that the EU had contributed at least €2 billion ($2.2 billion) toward Ukraine’s energy system since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

New York CNN —Once a holdout on using third-party services, Olive Garden is reversing course and will use Uber to deliver breadsticks and pasta. Olive Garden already offers delivery through its website and app, delivered by the restaurant’s employees. Even during the height of the pandemic, Olive Garden didn’t use the services, although the services benefited their competitors. The partnership likely alleviated some of the pain of a dismal quarter for Olive Garden, which reported a 2.9% drop in same-store sales for the quarter. Olive Garden doesn’t offer many discounts, like its competitors do.

Amelia is the latest generative AI tool that Amazon has brought to market in the past year as it seeks to capitalize on the hype sparked by OpenAI's ChatGPT. The company has introduced an AI-powered shopping assistant named Rufus, a chatbot for businesses dubbed Q and Bedrock, a generative AI service for cloud customers. More than 400,000 of Amazon's millions of third-party sellers have used its AI listing tool, up from 200,000 in June, he said. With Amelia, Amazon is counting on generative AI to help with a key issue for third-party merchants — account troubleshooting. Amazon said the tool uses retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, a popular AI industry framework that combines generative AI with long-established methods of information retrieval.

The visit came just days after Shoigu traveled to North Korea for talks with leader Kim Jong Un, and after he met Monday with Syrian leader Bashar Assad. This would mark an escalation in Iran's support for Russia, with the Islamic Republic previously sending aerial drones used by Russia to attack Ukrainian towns and infrastructure. AdvertisementIn recent months, North Korea has reportedly sent millions of shells to Russia, as well as ballistic missiles. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said last week that the delivery of Iranian missiles to Russia had changed the debate about Ukraine using Western long-range missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia. Russia is currently making incremental but important advances in its campaign to seize more territory in eastern Ukraine, while Ukraine has occupied parts of Russia's Kursk province, after a surprise attack last month.

Amazon announced Wednesday it's raising wages for its hourly warehouse workers, and adding a new employee perk that will give them a Prime subscription at no extra cost. Starting this month, Amazon's average starting pay for front-line employees in the U.S. will be bumped to an average of more than $22 an hour, up from roughly $20.50 an hour, the company said. The service, which costs $140 a year, gives members access to speedy shipping and video streaming, among other perks. Amazon said Tuesday it plans to host a second Prime Day-like deal bonanza on Oct. 8-9, the third year it's held the discount event.

The Haitian Times, an online publication, has covered Haiti and the Haitian diaspora around the world since it was founded in 1999. Springfield, Ohio, was already on the Haitian Times’ radar well before the conspiracy theories began. The Haitian Times covered the comments aggressively — describing them as racist and false. The day after the debate, The Haitian Times published an article reporting that Haitian immigrant families in Ohio were “under attack” amid the intense swirl of false claims. Springfield’s city manager told the publication that it could not guarantee the safety of its staff, Haitian Times founder Garry Pierre-Pierre told CNN.

Some Brazilian users reconnected with X on Wednesday despite the Supreme Court's recent nationwide ban, the result of the social network apparently changing the way its servers are accessed. That rendered X effectively inaccessible in the country until Wednesday, with AP journalists among those who had access. It acts as a proxy between users and X's servers, filtering traffic and preventing the original Internet Protocol (IP) address from being recognized, Diogenes told The Associated Press. Former president Jair Bolsonaro celebrated the return of the social network. Some Brazilian X users trumpeted the platform's return — with several addressing de Moraes directly, vowing that they weren't using a VPN.

That also means that AI data centers are growing fast — as is the demand for them. That in turn is set to drive up the demand for cooling systems for data centers. We believe the demand for liquid cooling for AI data centers should sustain for the following 5-10 years, driven by continuous iteration of AI chips and rising heat dissipation requirements," Jefferies said in a Sept. 10 report. Cooling services have been said to improve power efficiency in data centers and, by extension, cost efficiency. Envicool Technology : Jefferies expects data center cooling sales in Southeast Asia to contribute one-third of such sales for the Chinese firm.

Now, the retail giant is turning to generative AI to drive more same-day shipping. But not all the changes that generative AI may bring to the e-commerce giant are positive. Robots and new rolesThe number of Amazon warehouse robots grew from 350,000 in 2021 to more than 750,000 in 2023, according to the company. "They're using generative AI and computer vision to avoid obstacles and find the right place to stop," Armato said. Amazon's AI is three times better at identifying damaged products than humans are, the company said.

When Prime launched in 2005, two-day shipping was virtually unheard of. By March 2024, 60% of Prime items were delivered same or next day. Now Amazon wants to push that number even higher, using generative AI, despite concerns about energy and cost. CNBC got an exclusive look at Amazon's use of generative AI to optimize delivery routes, make more intelligent warehouse robots, and better predict where to stock new items.

Elon Musk said his now-deleted X post about how “no one is even trying to assassinate” Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden was intended to be a joke. The tech billionaire’s comment came after what the FBI is investigating as an “apparent assassination” attempt on former President Donald Trump on Sunday. Musk, who owns X, had posted a response to a user who had asked, “Why they want to kill Donald Trump?” Musk, who took over X — then Twitter — in October 2022, has been known to elevate debunked conspiracy theories on the platform. Musk on Monday also responded to a post from Donald Trump Jr. on X about the former president. “The incitement to hatred and violence against President Trump by the media and leading Democrats needs to stop” Musk wrote.

Is TikTok trying to secretly influence Americans at the behest of the Chinese government? And an analysis of the ownership structure of TikTok parent company ByteDance, obtained by NBC News, argues that the company is deeply entangled with some of China’s major government propaganda organs. The most recent one, published last month, found that TikTok suppresses anti-China content compared to YouTube and other social media platforms. In recent years, according to media reports, Chinese government entities have increasingly taken golden shares in technology companies. “This report establishes that TikTok algorithms actively suppress content critical of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) while simultaneously boosting pro-China propaganda and promoting distracting, irrelevant content,” the researchers wrote.

Marc Piasecki | Getty ImagesTesla CEO and X majority owner Elon Musk wrote and then deleted a Sunday post on X that appeared to question why there weren't more assassination threats made against President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk, who has 197.8 million listed followers on X, posted the message shortly after a second apparent assassination attempt against Republican former President Donald Trump. The post was prompted by an X user who asked, "Why they want to kill Donald Trump?" "Well, one lesson I've learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn't mean it's going to be all that hilarious as a post on X," Musk posted at 2:58 a.m. E.T. In battleground Pennsylvania, a must-win state for Harris, Biden spoke to a Philadelphia conference attended by leaders of historically Black colleges and universities. The divided ground game by the vice president and her boss-turned-top surrogate, aides say, is all part of a plan. Even watching Harris do what he failed disastrously to do during his own debate with Trump, Biden has evinced only pride in his vice president, not bitterness. In 2000, Vice President Al Gore sought distance from scandal-marred President Bill Clinton as he campaigned against George W. Bush. Biden is now one of several high profile surrogates the Harris campaign will seek to deploy.
