The GOP’s South Carolina primary won’t be held until Feb. 24. Arguing that voters of color should play a larger role in determining the Democratic presidential nominee, Biden championed a calendar beginning in South Carolina. South Carolina was also where Biden reversed his fortunes with a resounding victory during the 2020 Democratic primary after defeats in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. “I wouldn’t be here without the Democratic voters of South Carolina, and that’s a fact,” Biden said at the state's Democratic Party’s “First-in-the-Nation” celebration dinner last weekend. South Carolina’s primary will be the first opportunity Black voters have to voice their support – or displeasure – with Biden since that election. In 2020, Biden won 61% of the Black vote, which made up 56% of the Democratic primary electorate, according to CNN exit polling. South Carolina's primary was the first official nominating contest for Democrats, who – egged on by Biden – moved the state up in the primary schedule. But buoyed by Black voters – especially Black women – Biden earned nearly half of the primary vote in South Carolina in a five-way race, propelling him ultimately to the Democratic nomination. Despite the expected primary victory in South Carolina, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made a concerted effort to campaign there, visiting the Palmetto State the last two weekends. Harris also visited South Carolina three times since the beginning of the year, speaking at college campuses about student debt relief and abortion rights. Further, 76.5% of the early vote was made up of Black voters, 13% higher than in 2020, he added.

Biden stands as the overwhelming favorite to win the South Carolina primary against comparatively weak opposition: U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and Marianne Williamson, an author who ran unsuccessfully in 2020. In drawing up the official primary calendar, Democratic officials put South Carolina first. Biden hopes to win South Carolina by a whopping margin, which might infuse his candidacy with more energy and help deflect attention from his low standing in public opinion polls. A total of 55 delegates are at stake Saturday in South Carolina. South Carolina Democrats want a huge turnout to justify the party's decision to bump the state to the front of the line.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Supreme Court ordered state elections officials Friday to include U.S. Rep Dean Phillips on the state's Democratic presidential primary ballot, finding that Democrats on a bipartisan presidential selection committee who left him off the ballot without a discussion should have at least talked about him. “Today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck a blow against the anti-democratic attempts by Biden allies to unlawfully keep Congressman Dean Phillips off the ballot," Phillips campaign officials said in a statement. “We conclude that the Presidential Preference Selection Committee erroneously exercised its discretion under (state law) with respect to Phillips,” the ruling said. Phillips has been certified to appear on the primary ballot in other states. The Wisconsin selection committee also placed former President Donald Trump and five other Republican challengers, including four who have since ceased campaigning, on the ballot.

When Rep. Dean Phillips first began making noise about launching a quixotic presidential campaign, the mood among House Democrats might have best been described as anger and disbelief. Since launching his campaign, Phillips has generally been absent from Capitol Hill, effectively cutting down Democrats' ranks by one seat. AdvertisementOn Wednesday evening, Sen. Tina Smith made light of her Minnesota colleague's recent struggles in a video message to the Congressional Dinner, an annual gathering of reporters and lawmakers. At first, Phillips's campaign seemed to constitute a real threat to Biden, even if he was unlikely to actually defeat him. In a statement for this story, a Phillips spokesperson chastised his Democratic colleagues who now speak ill of him.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the state elections commission not to transmit the presidential primary ballot to county clerks as it ponders an attempt by Democratic U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips to get added as a candidate. The order comes six days after Phillips asked the court to intervene and have his name added to the ballot in the battleground state after state Democratic leaders on a presidential selection committee did not include it. The Supreme Court's one-sentence order Thursday directed the Wisconsin Elections Commission not to transmit the ballot until further notice. The court has yet to decide whether it will rule in the case, but it has accepted arguments from Phillips, the elections commission and the presidential selection committee. Attorneys from the state Department of Justice representing the elections commission and the presidential selection committee said in court filings Wednesday that Philllips' challenge should be rejected because he brought it too late.

No, it’s not about how to get your kids Taylor Swift tickets in Tokyo. My news is that Dean Phillips is not going to run as a third-party candidate for president. OK, you’re thinking that you’ve had more thrilling news from the grocer on banana prices. People there were a tad piqued by the Democrats’ decision to move the first official party vote to South Carolina. Despite all that rancor, Phillips, who, unlike President Biden, was on the ballot, got about 24,000 votes to Biden’s nearly 80,000 write-ins.

Phillips last week asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court to order that his name be added to the primary ballot in the battleground state after he was excluded by the state’s top Democrats who only put President Joe Biden’s name on the April 2 primary ballot. The bipartisan presidential selection committee that didn't forward his name in time, as well as the Wisconsin Elections Commission, told the Supreme Court in a joint response on Wednesday that Phillips waited too long. They also argued that Phillips has no standing to bring the challenge because the presidential selection committee has the sole discretion to decide who gets on the ballot. The Wisconsin Elections Commission traditionally just accepts the recommendations from party leaders that come forward through the presidential selection committee. Phillips has been certified to appear on the primary ballot in other states.

Story highlights Trump is looking to attract union members, who have traditionally voted Democratic. CNN —Former President Donald Trump Wednesday met with Teamsters union leaders and members in Washington as his campaign tries to drive a wedge between President Joe Biden and one of his most loyal constituencies: organized labor. The Teamsters have twice endorsed against Trump, backing Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden four years later. “We’re not ceding any territory, any group, any demographic to Joe Biden,” one senior Trump adviser said of the campaign’s outreach to working class voters. The group said Biden had been invited to its headquarters on the same day as Trump.

On Monday, the Wisconsin Supreme Court gave the committee that put forward Biden's name as the only Democratic candidate, as well as the state elections commission, until Wednesday to respond. Former President Donald Trump and five of his challengers, including four who have ceased campaigning, will also be on the Wisconsin ballot. Before then, no candidate in modern history had failed to win his party's contested New Hampshire primary and gone on to win the presidency. Front-runners Biden and former Republican President Donald Trump won their respective party's primaries. As a sitting president in 2020, Trump took 86% of the New Hampshire primary vote and 97% of the vote in the Iowa caucuses. An incumbent president who got 59% of the vote in the Iowa caucuses and close to half in the New Hampshire primary? About two-thirds (67%) of Republican primary voters in New Hampshire told exit pollsters they opposed a national ban on abortion.

The problem with this approach is that most Republican voters do not want an alternative to Trump; they overwhelmingly back him. At least that’s what the Nikki Haley campaign said after finishing second to former President Donald Trump in the New Hampshire primaries on Tuesday. Democratic nominee Bill Clinton and third-party candidate Ross Perot exploited that division in the Republican Party against Bush in the fall. The Republican Party is united behind Trump, and with optimal conditions for an opponent like Haley, Trump was still unstoppable. “Democrats deserve options, and it’s not clear at all that President Biden can beat Donald Trump.

What to Watch in the New Hampshire Primary

New Hampshire voters head to the polls on Tuesday for the first presidential primary of the 2024 nomination cycle, in a state that has been known to throw curveballs at overwhelming favorites. The withdrawal of Gov. Ron DeSantis from the Republican race on Sunday effectively left what had recently been a crowded field of candidates down to two: former President Donald J. Trump, and former Gov. The national Democratic Party, pushed by President Biden, had wanted New Hampshire Democrats to break tradition and move their primary to the end of February. New Hampshire refused, leaving the president’s supporters to mount a write-in campaign for the absent Mr. Biden against Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, the self-help author Marianne Williams and 19 other Democrats whose names are on the ballot.

The former South Carolina governor is pushing back hard against Trump’s bid to end the GOP primary race after only two nominating contests. She’s calling on voters to make a generational shift and is appealing especially to independents who can join the GOP primary in New Hampshire. According to a CNN poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire before DeSantis dropped out, Haley trailed Trump by 13 points in a two-person race. But like the late Arizona senator, Haley might still have a South Carolina problem. Even Haley’s most vehement supporter, New Hampshire GOP Gov.
