To assemble our database, we looked at all 1.7 million car listings on cargurus.com from August 2 to December 16, 2023. To weed out anomalies, we considered only counties with at least 400 car listings, and only car models that appeared at least 400 times nationally. (In calculating political popularity, we included models that appeared at least 250 times nationally.) Cars were included in a county's listings if they appeared in a ZIP code associated with that county. We then placed car models in those counties on a political spectrum of reddest (-1) to bluest (+1).

China’s National Health Commission (NHC) is surveying 30,000 people to understand factors influencing their attitudes towards childbearing and the “fear surrounding having children”, as authorities struggle to boost a flagging birthrate. The survey will include people from 150 counties in China and 1,500 different communities, the state-backed Global Times said late on Thursday, citing the China Population and Development Research Center, which falls under the NHC. Beijing is trying to encourage young couples to have children after China posted a second consecutive year of population decline in 2023. The survey aims to analyze “reluctance and fear surrounding having children” and ultimately provide fertility support and incentive measures, the newspaper said. It comes after China’s National Bureau of Statistics said it will conduct a nationwide sample survey from Oct. 10-Nov. 30 to monitor population changes.

Nearly all of those jurisdictions provide multiple vote reports (updates to the vote count) on election night and in the following days. I spoke to voters and a mayor in Northampton, one of two bellwether counties in Pennsylvania. The mayor told me that politics are local — and the election will likely come down to grocery bills. Both Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump were in Pennsylvania on the same Monday, courting voters at a rally and town hall respectively. There was 46-year-old Michelle Kerns, who said she doesn't think Harris gets enough credit for easing inflation. I heard many iterations of "I'm not following the election" or "I'm sick of talking about it" on Monday afternoon.

Early voting is getting underway throughout the country, including in key battleground states like Georgia, where more than 300,000 people voted Tuesday, the first day of early voting. However, there were substantial differences in the number of early voters based on a city or county’s partisan lean. So far in 2024, more absentee voting has occurred in places that tend to support Republicans than places that tend to lean Democratic. However, if early voters are less consistent or new voters, it could signal a shift in electoral trends ahead of November. These satellite voting locations may make early in-person voting accessible in more populous areas, which tend to be more Democratic-leaning.

A Georgia judge on Tuesday blocked a new rule from the state's election board that would have required counties to count ballots cast on Election Day by hand, a provision critics had said would cause delays and disruptions in reporting results in the battleground state. CNN —Two critical battleground states – Georgia and North Carolina – are kicking off early in-person voting this week. In Georgia, voters can head to the ballot box beginning on Tuesday and in North Carolina, early in-person voting begins on Thursday. “I don’t want to discourage people from using drop boxes by any means, but I can see why people would think it’s easier to show up in person.”Meanwhile, the opportunities to vote early in-person have expanded: Georgia law mandates two Saturdays of early voting and allows for two Sundays of early voting if a county desires. A doctor shortage is projected to hit 86,000 by 2036. According to the Rural Medical Training Collaborative, 133 rural residencies in family medicine and 69 rural-track programs are recruiting for 2025 enrollment, along with 30 internal-medicine residencies and 16 psychiatry residencies. Several pieces of legislation have also been introduced to Congress to address the doctor shortage. For example, HR 7855, the Association of American Medical Colleges-endorsed Rural Residency Planning and Development Act of 2024, would codify the Rural Residency Planning and Development Program, which funds the startup costs of residency training in rural areas, Dill said. From 2019 to 2024, the program has enabled the launch of 46 accredited rural residency programs across 38 states and Puerto Rico.

CNN —A judge in Georgia has paused a new rule from the Georgia State Election Board that would have required officials to hand-count the number of ballots cast at each polling place, criticizing state election officials for approving it so close to Election Day. The hand-count rule is the subject of litigation on multiple fronts and a separate hearing on the matter is set for Wednesday. Passed by the Donald Trump-backed Republican majority on the state election board, the rule would require officials at a polling place to match the number of ballots tallied by voting machines with a hand-count of the number of ballots cast. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, has noted the state took several steps to speed up the reporting of results in Georgia this year. He has said the hand-count rule could delay the reporting of results, foster an atmosphere for misinformation and present chain of custody issues for ballots.
