Matthew Continetti Governor Haley is an excellent communicator, but her message was often lost amid all the cross talk. Daniel McCarthy In this debate, Governor Haley decided to play the role that Vivek Ramaswamy played last time, frequently interrupting and attacking others. Matthew Continetti Governor DeSantis is not an exciting debater, but he remains the most plausible alternative to Donald Trump. Jane Coaston He really, really, really wanted to fight Donald Trump, who was not present. His worst moment was a canned line in which he compared Donald Trump to Donald Duck (Disney defamation suit to follow).

“Most Republican grass roots voters are not sympathetic to the dumbest version of the election conspiracy. More important, the “dumbest” version of the stolen election conspiracy is precisely what Mr. Trump and his enablers have been aggressively spreading for years. It is what drove the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, landed many rioters in prison, led to Fox News paying a $787.5 million defamation settlement and prompted grand juries to indict Mr. Trump in federal and state courts. Mr. Vance may want to believe that most Republicans are too smart to buy such lunacy, but he is too smart not to recognize the damage to American democracy being wrought by that lunacy. As for those who criticize his approach, Mr. Vance saw them as out of sync with voters.

I find it egregious and very painful to witness this country’s willingness to abandon an entire generation as it ages and suffers inevitable illnesses. Barbara R. RauchNew YorkTo the Editor:Michelle Cottle paints a depressing picture of our nation’s failure to care for aging Americans who often have physical and mental impairments. Typically that’s a woman who is divorced, unmarried, childless or unemployed. Caregiving is a stressful and thankless job that often leads to the caregiver’s depression and social isolation. Other family members may provide money to caregivers, but they seldom convey their sympathy or contribute their own precious time.

To the Editor:Re “How We Can Fix Our Loneliness Epidemic,” by Nicholas Kristof (column, Sept. 7), and “Flexible Housing,” by Michelle Cottle (Opinion, Sept. 10):In recent weeks, Mr. Kristof and Ms. Cottle have written convincingly about the problems of loneliness and isolation and the need for more flexible housing options as our population ages. In neither piece was there any mention of the option of home sharing, which is a low-cost and immediate means of aiding the housing crisis for both young and old. At Home Share Oregon, a nonprofit based in Portland, we connect homeowners who have spare rooms — many of whom are mortgage-burdened, lonely and living on meager Social Security checks — with renters struggling to find a home. There was a time when boardinghouses were part of the cultural norm and helped bring people together. We are working to change the cultural norm by moving forward with a proven means of housing people while at the same time building financial resilience and combating the loneliness epidemic.

Gaetz & Company have a point: Mr. McCarthy is out of compliance with several of his promises — or at least several they claim he made. It is Mr. McCarthy who led them to believe he would champion their policies and priorities. And it is Mr. McCarthy who elevated their influence in the conference, empowering them to wreak even greater havoc. Some of what Mr. McCarthy committed to was beyond his power to deliver. At that point, Mr. McCarthy really should have started adjusting his strategy — and the hard-liners’ expectations — accordingly.

Is it just me, or did Kevin McCarthy look a little rough around the edges on Tuesday when announcing his decision to open an impeachment investigation into President Biden? I realize that Mr. McCarthy, the House speaker, needed to convey a dignified solemnity on such an occasion. But in his brief appearance, Mr. McCarthy came across not so much as serious and statesmanlike but as if the words were being dragged from his lips. That it has finally sunk in that he has become the not-so-glorified puppet of the House Republican conference’s radicals, folks like Dan Bishop, Chip Roy and, most prominently, Matt Gaetz. Mr. McCarthy may wield the gavel.

Afterward the summit, Biden and Vietnamese General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong will meet in Hanoi and are expected to announce plans to tighten economic cooperation. The Chinese economy is weighed down by a property bubble, local government debt, high youth unemployment and a broader inability to rebound as expected from pandemic lockdowns. But so far this year, the U.S. economy has outperformed expectations as the Chinese economy has underperformed. Still, China’s economic challenges could create more geopolitical risk as economics can often inform national security strategies. At an August fundraiser in Utah, Biden called China's economy a “ticking time bomb.”“When bad folks have problems, they do bad things,” the president said.

“I knew Mom was having a hard time,” Ms. Parrish recalled. Soon the three of them were in search of a way to keep Ms. Dalrymple close — but not too close. Their solution was to build Ms. Dalrymple a small home literally in the Parrishes’ backyard. Ms. Dalrymple sold the California house to fund the construction, and in 2014 she downsized into a custom-designed, 740-square-foot house that suits her needs perfectly. Aging in place, surrounded by familiar places, faces and memories, can provide a sense of comfort and independence. Being an aging nation also means becoming a nation of caregivers, one that requires a new system of support. For most older Americans, care will come from unpaid family members or friends, who contributed around $600 billion worth of free labor to the economy in 2021, according to AARP. Starting in the mid-1990s, he spent several years caring for his mother, who suffered from schizophrenia and lung cancer. With increasing frequency, he shuttled between his home in upstate New York and hers in South Carolina, taking her to medical appointments.

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the first Republican presidential primary candidate debate, held in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Gail Collins: She seemed generally reasonable and wow, when the debate turned to education and she actually brought up reading. If there’s any life left in the old G.O.P., Haley gave it hope. Perhaps more important, in taking on the glib and callow Ramaswamy on Ukraine, she showed anger and dominance, essential qualities in a Republican debate. Mr. Trump may well be correct to assume he has more to lose than gain from these matchups. They are meant to provide voters with a meaty opportunity to judge their options side-by-side, to listen to them field tough questions, to compare their policies and priorities and visions of leadership. It is all the truer for Mr. Trump, who is dominating the Republican herd. Even with Mr. Trump missing, there will be much awkward talk of him. The candidate needs to lock down savvy people he trusts and will listen to, even as he jettisons the troublemakers. When Mr. McCain cut loose a couple of his top advisers in 2007, several senior staff members followed them out the door. This is when a candidate really needs to step up and impose order. The harsh reality of reboots is that some presidential hopefuls are just too out of step with the political moment to rescue. By the fall of 2015, Team Jeb was slashing staff and hoping for the debates to help him win free media.

The Cure to Male Loneliness - The New York Times

As a former colleague noted of her husband, “I am not sure he’d be functioning without tennis friends. Facing a looming career switch and an empty nest, my friend Cathy’s husband, Rick, formed a bourbon club. But it is also critical, because the crisis of male loneliness isn’t hurting just men. In heterosexual relationships, many men overwhelmingly lean on their female partners for emotional support. But being someone’s everything can be a bit much, putting a strain on even the most loving relationships.

But with a majority this scrawny, House conservatives are playing with fire. All Democrats need to do is flip a handful of seats to snatch the gavel from Mr. McCarthy’s hand. And many are particular tired of it on the issue of abortion, which drew key numbers of swing voters to Democrats in last year’s midterms. But time and again, Mr. McCarthy’s troops seem dead set on signaling that the G.O.P. Swing voters aren’t generally all that keen on posturing, do-nothing Congresses, either.
