This in effect creates an 'implied' 2H of 2024 guidance that is perhaps excessively optimistic," CEO Adam Parker wrote Sunday. Parker's warning comes after S & P 500 reported earnings growth of 4.2% for the fourth quarter on a year-over-year basis, per FactSet. He also screened for stocks in which there's a big difference between earnings expectations for the first and the second half of the year. Parker surmises that these stocks may disappoint on these aggressive earnings turnarounds. Consensus estimates from analysts surveyed by FactSet suggest the stock, which is down nearly 5% this year, could gain 13.2% from Monday's close.

"And I sort of look at the stock market right now as that clown of the circus blowing up the balloon." That earnings multiple is based on future earnings prospects, the economy, and interest rates. When the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates and the yield curve steepens, he said big banks should bring opportunities. "There will be areas to dip your toes in, but not for the overall market," Rosenberg said. He's bullish on long-term bonds and gold as the Fed cuts interest rates.

Please note, that Abbott Laboratories is not listed below as we did not own the name before the company's earnings release. Meta Platforms had one of the best earnings reports of the entire season, as sales, earnings, and cash flow trounced expectations. Despite missing earnings expectations, Coterra Energy delivered where it matters most: discretionary and free cash flow. Honeywell 's earnings results weren't great, with sales missing across the board and segment profit results coming up mixed. Given the stock's reaction, one might wonder why we don't think the earnings results from Palo Alto Networks were flat-out ugly.

Eight economists, investment chiefs, and strategists that Business Insider recently spoke to credited healthier-than-anticipated consumer balance sheets and spending for the continued expansion. Growth stocks have often been investor darlings — the S & P 500 is driven by stocks in sectors like tech. Value stocks are less popular. But many growth stocks are also becoming expensive, prompting some investors to turn to value stocks. Goldman Sachs also recently highlighted value stocks that stand out for their cheap valuations compared with earnings growth prospects. In a market bedazzled by flashy growth stocks, Torray Investment Partners instead runs a fund that's trying to redefine what value is. The Torray Fund , founded by the late Robert Torray in 1990, is ahead 7.4% so far this year, outpacing the 6.5% gain in the S & P 500. Apart from the Torray Fund, the firm manages four other concentrated portfolios that also hold between 20 and 30 companies. These portfolios are separately managed accounts of either concentrated large growth companies, small- and mid-capitalization growth names, large value companies and equity income. The Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit on Monday, joined by several state attorneys general, to challenge a merger between the supermarket giants Kroger and Albertsons. The agency’s rationale in many ways echoed Mr. Biden’s renewed attempts to blame corporate greed for rising prices and shrinking portions in grocery aisles. Because grocery prices have risen significantly in recent years, they added, “the stakes for Americans are exceptionally high.”That is true for consumers, and it is true for the president. More Americans disapprove of his handling of the economy than approve of it. Consumer confidence, while improved in recent months, remains relatively weak for an economy with low unemployment and solid growth like the one Mr. Biden is presiding over.

Why rich companies also keep getting richerThere's another major disconnect that the broader market's impressive performance is masking, strategists at Morgan Stanley remarked in a recent note. Since then, the return gap has gotten even worse in a historically narrow market, Wilson wrote. Morgan Stanley"The equity market understands this economy is not that great for the average company or consumer," Wilson wrote. This rare combination of expansionary fiscal policy and restrictive monetary policy has had the unintended consequence of "crowding out the private economy," Wilson wrote. Companies that can grow without borrowing money at unattractive rates are at a huge advantage, which Morgan Stanley believes has fueled their immense success lately.

The two funds stood out among 8,300 equity ETFs worldwide screened by CNBC Pro using FactSet data. Over that period, the ETF more than doubled investors' money, with a cumulative total price gain of 118%. While the MSCI Healthcare index, valued in euros, dipped slightly into negative territory in 2016, 2020 and 2022, the Amundi ETF's total returns have remained positive because of the weakness in the pound sterling.
