Starting in 2029, a new federal safety regulation will require all new cars and trucks in the United States to be sold with automatic emergency braking — sensors that hit the brakes to avoid a collision if the driver does not. The new rule, which was made final on Monday, imposes more stringent requirements than the automatic emergency braking technology now sold on most vehicles, and even goes past the point of present technological feasibility, automakers said. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration set a September 2029 date for compliance, saying it was confident that the systems would be ready by then. The system will also have to at least begin to apply the brakes at speeds up to 90 m.p.h. That’s higher than the maximum U.S. speed limit of 85 m.p.h.

Federal authorities say a "critical safety gap" in Tesla 's Autopilot system contributed to at least 467 collisions, 13 resulting in fatalities and "many others" resulting in serious injuries. The findings come from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration analysis of 956 crashes in which Tesla Autopilot was thought to have been in use. Tesla's Autopilot design has "led to foreseeable misuse and avoidable crashes," the NHTSA report said. The agency also said it was opening a new probe into the effectiveness of a software update Tesla previously issued as part of a recall in December. Fifteen people were taken to local hospitals with injuries, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. “There was a tram incident at the theme park tonight that resulted in multiple minor injuries, confirmed by the LA County Fire Dept,” a Universal Studios Hollywood spokesperson told CNN in a statement. The theme park did not provide further details on what caused the issue with the tram. CNN —One rescued crew member has died and seven others are still missing after two Japanese military helicopters appeared to have crashed during a drill late Saturday, Japan’s Defense Minister Minoru Kihara said. “It is very unfortunate that this situation has come to this point,” Kihara told reporters on Sunday. Kihara said that “there is a high possibility of a collision,” and the flight recorders of the two helicopters were found and recovered from the area. “What is believed to be part of the aircraft has been confirmed at sea, and the two aircraft are thought to have crashed,” Kihara said. The SH-60K helicopters are mainly stationed on and operated from destroyers, and the two aircraft were conducting night-time training to search for submarines, according to the JMSDF.

CNN —The investigation into why a cargo ship lost power and struck a Baltimore bridge last month, causing it to collapse, is currently focused on engine room equipment, the National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday. Hyundai, the equipment’s manufacturer, has sent employees to the Dali ship to help “download data from the electrical power system and look at the circuit breakers,” NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy told the Senate Commerce Committee. “There isn’t enough information on that to understand what’s going on in the engine room,” she said. Investigators also spoke with crewmembers who may be involved in the engine and electrical systems, including the chief and an assistant engineer, and the electrician. Separately, the US Army Corps of Engineers released new 3D sonar images of the wreckage below the surface of the river.
