AdvertisementAs the way we save for retirement has evolved, some people are now cashing in on the golden age for retirement savings — when benefits were more generous and investments in real estate and stocks boomed. While it's still possible to achieve, a fat retirement account has become rarer. AdvertisementBack in 2007, per GAO's calculations of the Survey of Consumer Finances, around 21% of low-income households had a retirement account balance. While losses weren't as profound for those in the middle-income quintile, their retirement account balances did fall slightly from 2007 to 2019. All of that comes as retirement savings become more of an individual onus.

Basic income programs are the next victim, now on Fox. "Universal Basic Guys" stars a pair of brothers who join a $3,000-a-month basic income program after the hot dog factory where they work becomes automated. A universal basic income is often cited as a potential solution to the likely job losses created by artificial intelligence. A universal basic income would give monthly no-strings-attached cash payments to everyone, regardless of their financial status. While more cities are experimenting with basic income programs, they have also been the target of conservative ire.

CNN —As the conservative Supreme Court majority has won case after case in recent days, liberal dissenters are having their moment in the courtroom. Other justices stared out at spectators or down at notes, perhaps anticipating the next opinions, and dissents, to be revealed. The court majority reversed a 1984 milestone that required judges to defer to reasonable agency interpretations of their congressional mandates. Her oral dissent lasted nearly 15 minutes, about five minutes longer than Roberts’ rendition of the majority opinion. They begin with the author of the majority opinion delivering the facts of the case, law involved, and the resolution.

The US housing market is distorting a core principal of economics: supply and demand. Home prices soared to record highs in May, even as existing home sales fell and supply of homes for sale jumped. AdvertisementThe US housing market has officially entered bizzaro world. The law of supply and demand is a basic principle of any free market, and right now, it's being subverted by strange happenings in the real estate market. Read previewContaminated milk may be spreading H5N1 bird flu between dairy cattle, contributing to a major outbreak across 12 US states. A new study shows the virus can survive for over an hour in raw (unpasteurized) milk left on the surfaces of materials used in equipment for milking dairy cattle. That's a clue in the mystery of how the virus has spread so rapidly between US dairy cattle, infecting over 130 herds in Idaho, Michigan, Colorado, Texas, and more. The cattle outbreak has scientists increasingly worried that the H5N1 virus could mutate enough to cause an outbreak in humans. However, the study suggests that cleaning milking equipment between cows and outfitting workers with protective gear could help prevent the spread.

A yoga practice, a mindfulness practice, a gratitude practice. I’m not totally sure when a nourishing activity passes into the realm of a practice, but I think it has something to do with intention and devotion. You commit to doing it on a regular basis, and after enough reps, it becomes part of who you are. I’ve done the first day of the “Yoga With Adriene” 30-day challenge at least 30 times. It might be something witty I said, or the way I reframed how I was thinking about a situation.

Some people could find themselves wrangling with summer travel bills well after Labor Day. To that point, 36% of Americans said they plan to take on debt in order to travel this summer, according to a March survey from Bankrate. The payment methods for summer travel expenses ranged from personal loans (5%) and buy now, pay later services (8%) to borrowing from family and friends (6%). Additionally, 26% of summer travelers said they intend to use a credit card and pay over for the vacation over multiple billing cycles. "The reason that's worrisome is because the average credit card charges more than 20%, which is close to a record high," said Ted Rossman, a senior credit card industry analyst at Bankrate.
