"It's about leaning into my age and experience as an asset versus being 'too old' for the startup world," Loria, 61, said. A survey by Gusto, a payroll-services company for small businesses, found that nearly one in four new businesses started in 2023 were in the professional-services industry. It also found that among the businesses started by people 55 and older in 2023, about 35% were in the professional-services industry. Though many say they are thankful to have Social Security payments at all, they aren't enough to fill the gap. To help pay the bills, nearly 80% of retirees receive some Social Security income, per BI's calculations, and the Social Security Administration estimates that 97% of older adults will ultimately receive benefits. She told BI that her expected $2,000 monthly Social Security payments may not be enough. As pensions dissipate and only higher-earning retirees have savings, Social Security might only become more pivotal for retirees. Advertisement"I don't want to be rich, I just need to be comfortable," 62-year-old Angela Babin — who lives on her $1,100 monthly Social Security check — told BI.

This ascent is something scientists have been looking forward to for years, long before Perseverance landed on Mars. Turning back Martian timeThe impact that created Jezero Crater also generated a lot of heat, partly from the energy of the object that slammed into Mars. CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s Supreme Court has backed President Nicolás Maduro’s claims that he won last month’s presidential election and said voting tallies published online showing he lost by a landslide were forged. CNN —Human brain samples collected at autopsy in early 2024 contained more tiny shards of plastic than samples collected eight years prior, according to a preprint posted online in May. “Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50% higher,” Campen said. Nanoplastics are the most worrisome plastics for human health, experts say, because the minuscule pieces can take up residence inside individual cells. In that report, the consortium determined plastics are associated with harms to human health at every single stage of the plastic lifecycle. A March 2024 study found 1 liter of bottled water — the equivalent of two standard-size bottled waters typically purchased by consumers — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics.

Reuters —Cruise will offer its autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform starting next year, the companies said on Thursday, as the General Motors-backed robotaxi firm attempts a comeback. The multi-year partnership will allow Uber riders to choose a trip using a Cruise autonomous vehicle, they said. Uber’s partnership with Cruise comes as Tesla CEO Elon Musk is set to unveil its delayed plans for a robotaxi product in October amid slowing demand for electric vehicles. Commercializing autonomous vehicles has been tougher than expected and taken longer than promised due to complex technology, soaring investments, tight regulatory scrutiny and federal investigations. Trips by self-driving vehicles on Uber’s platform rose six-fold in the June quarter year-on-year, helped by partnerships with companies including Waymo, as well as startup Waabi for freight services.

“They are using food as a weapon,” a senior aid official told CNN. “No official travel authorization has been granted to humanitarian partners to implement activities outside of Sittwe township since November 2023,” a senior aid official told CNN. The UN aid officials made clear in their meetings, which have not been previously reported, that the status quo is unacceptable, the sources said. A World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse in Maungdaw was looted and burned in June, depriving that community of urgently needed food aid. A senior UN aid official in Myanmar blamed the funding shortfall in part on international apathy.

Now, one of those buildings is struggling, and equity investors risk being wiped out. Crowdfunding platform Yieldstreet, which has helped raise money for the property, recently told its equity investors that their investments could be wiped out. Flow launched in 2022 with investments in six apartment buildings, including the now-troubled Nashville property, and a $350 million check from venture firm Andreessen Horowitz. A Flow spokesperson sought to distance the Miami-based startup from the 2010 West End property, saying that Flow has never managed the building and is only the minority equity owner.

They'll hand 5%, or $25,000, to their agent, who then gives half, or $12,500, to the buyer's agent. They also feared that buyers' agents might "steer" clients away from homes that dared to offer less than the going rate. But in order to keep using the MLS, buyers' agents will have to abide by another rule that will further upend the old way of doing things. In the old days, a seller might have unthinkingly offered a commission of 2% or even 3% to the buyer's agent. The idea that sellers pay both agents' commissions has always been a clever sleight of hand.

This spring, the company unveiled plans for Pagani Residences, a 70-unit condo development in Miami's North Bay Village. Beyond automakers, there's a growing list of luxury brands hoping to use real estate to turn their cultural cachet into cold, hard cash. New York's five-star Sherry-Netherland Hotel began welcoming long-term residents almost a century ago, and since then roughly 700 branded residences have graced skylines around the world. But when it comes to branded residences, there are real selling points for buyers. The Elle project may seem out of left field, but Itani told me he's talking with another publication interested in making similar inroads.

New York CNN —Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued General Motors Tuesday, alleging the carmaker illegally collected and sold drivers’ data to insurance companies without their consent or knowledge, according to a release from the AG’s office. The suit said those two companies then sold these scores to insurance companies. Insurance companies can use data to see how many times people exceeded a speed limit or obeyed other traffic laws. But the attorney general’s office claimed GM “deceived” its Texan customers by encouraging them to enroll in programs such as OnStar Smart Driver. But by agreeing to join these programs, customers also unknowingly agreed to the collection and sale of their data, the attorney general’s office said.

Organizations are shifting to hybrid cloud and on-prem IT infrastructure for more control over data. It has been a decades-long dream of corporate America: making it harder for aggrieved customers, workers and others to file lawsuits against companies seeking compensation for alleged injuries, mistreatment and other harms. Now Uber, the giant ride-hailing company that has been a magnet for such litigation, is pitching a plan that could fulfill that fantasy, at least in one state. The company is seeking to place a measure on Nevada’s ballot that would drastically limit the amount of money that lawyers could collect when they brought successful lawsuits. If the measure passes, it will make it less attractive — and in some cases financially impractical — for plaintiffs’ lawyers to file such suits.

zimmytws | iStock | Getty ImagesThe Social Security Administration faces a "record-breaking backlog" of open cases, leading to approximately $1.1 billion in projected improper payments to beneficiaries, according to a new report from the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General. Of those that were improper payment cases, the average processing time was 698 days, according to a sample evaluated by SSA OIG. Improper payment includes overpayments, where beneficiaries are paid more than they should be, as well as underpayments, where payments to beneficiaries may be erroneously reduced. watch nowIf the pending cases had been resolved immediately, about 528,000 beneficiaries would have been improperly paid about $534 million, the report estimated. After 12 months, that improper payment amount for those beneficiaries rose to about $756 million.

There were French firemen flipping like acrobats, a musician playing a piano that hung vertically in the air, and Olympic athletes overwhelming the stage and forming a mosh pit around the French electro-pop band Phoenix. The Paris Olympics ended much as they began, with a raucous spectacle before a joyous crowd, a generous supply of strobe lights, smoke and fireworks. And then the actor Tom Cruise rappelled off the stadium roof to collect the Olympic flag from the gymnast Simone Biles and carry it off on his motorcycle, à la “Top Gun” and “Mission: Impossible” to Los Angeles, where the next summer Olympics is set to take place in 2028. “Together, we have experienced the Games like nothing we have ever lived before,” said Tony Estanguet, the president of the Paris Olympics organizing committee, adding that of all the records broken, among them was one for marriage proposals. “From one day to the next, time stood still and a whole country got goose bumps.”

These weren’t spies or drug test collectors. They are the staff of the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. And to collect items that tell the stories of the Paris Games, they needed to be everywhere. There were 32 sports and 329 medal events crammed into two weeks. So museum staff members fanned out as history happened to gather mementos: a gymnast’s leotard, a fencer’s saber, a Grand Slam tournament champion’s tennis racket, an opening ceremony outfit.
