Oracle, which works with Nvidia and Microsoft on generative AI capabilities, has already helped use cloud tech to cut red tape for countries. For the first time, we're beginning to win business for countries," Ellison said. Countries including Serbia are standardizing on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and using generative AI for processes like automating health care. Cloud and generative AI applications allowing countries to give rural areas internet access could increase educational opportunities and create more economic value. "There's the 'Black Mirror' bad side of it: Big Brother, data wars, AI warfare and all that stuff," Garder said.

Like many other enterprise companies, Symphony was locked into its cloud providers as its tech stack became increasingly entwined with and dependent on the cloud companies' tools and software. Some of that computing power and storage comes from the major cloud providers themselves, by way of consumer devices, but they can also come from a company's own private cloud, Gurle said. On Wall Street, tech execs constantly look for new ways to keep cloud costs in check. This is reaching new heights thanks to the AI craze, with the construction of data centers wreaking havoc on rural communities. Here's the pitch deck Hive used to raise $13 million.

Igor Golovniov | Sopa Images | Lightrocket via Getty ImagesMicrosoft was accused Friday of abusing the dominance of its Azure cloud computing unit to squeeze a — and, in some cases, evaporate — the profit margins of rival cloud platforms in Europe. Under those rules, Microsoft required firms to purchase a Software Assurance license and "mobility rights" if they wanted to deploy their Microsoft software on hosted cloud services offered by rival providers. It also formed the basis of an investigation from the European Commission seeking to determine whether Microsoft's cloud practices are anti-competitive. But the growth of the unnamed cloud vendor's profit margins didn't match Microsoft's, and in fact the competing cloud vendor saw their margins fall from a positive mid-twenties percentage in 2018 to double-digit negative profit margins in 2023. The biggest decline in profit margins for this cloud firm occurred in 2019, the same year Microsoft changed its licensing terms to favor licensing software on Azure, the CISPE said.

Among his reasons for no more than a neutral opinion, Ng highlighted that Super Micro Computer currently trades in line with Nvidia on a price-to-earnings basis. The U.S. Commerce Department probe is because Chinese assembled smart vehicles could collect sensitive data about U.S. citizens and infrastructure and send the data to China, the White House said. "China's policies could flood our market with its vehicles, posing risks to our national security," President Joe Biden said in a statement. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said the administration was taking action "before Chinese manufactured vehicles become widespread in the United States and potentially threaten our privacy and national security." The White House also said vehicles could "be piloted or disabled remotely" and added the investigation will also look at autonomous vehicles. The Commerce Department will seek comments for 60 days on the potential risks of Chinese connected vehicles and then consider drafting regulations to address concerns.

Opinion: What the AT&T outage reveals
  + stars: | 2024-02-23 | by ( Opinion Bob Kolasky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —The news Thursday morning of the AT&T service outage — affecting tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of customers — was yet another reminder of the importance of critical infrastructure resilience. By a few minutes after 3 pm ET, about 11 hours after customers’ initial reports of the outage, AT&T said it had restored service to all affected customers. For communications, it can be conceptualized in two different ways: What is the scope and scale of the service outage and what are the cascading consequences of the outage? In a connected world, a widespread communications outage can have a contagion effect. Infrastructure outage incidents can’t be addressed by stove-piping information.
