REUTERS/Carlos Barria Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking permission to appeal a decision reinstating gag orders in his New York civil fraud case to the state's highest court, a court filing showed on Monday. A mid-level state appeals court last week reinstated the gag orders, which barred Trump and his lawyers from making public statements about court staff. Justice Arthur Engoron imposed the gag order on Trump on Oct. 3 after Trump accused Engoron's top clerk of political bias in a post on his Truth Social platform. The post left the court "inundated" with hundreds of threats from Trump supporters, Engoron said in a court filing. In Monday's filing, Trump lawyer Clifford Robert asked the mid-level appeals court, known as the Appellate Division, to allow Trump to appeal its reinstatement of the orders to the Albany-based Court of Appeals.

“There is a foreign policy dividend in keeping a lid on oil prices,” said David Goldwyn, who was a leading energy diplomat in the Obama administration. Exxon Mobil was kicked out of the Dow Jones industrial average, and some European oil companies announced plans to pivot from fossil fuels to renewables more quickly. While he has supported green energy and battery-powered cars, he has also hectored oil companies to increase production in an effort to drive down prices for consumers. He has approved a large drilling project in Alaska over the objections of environmentalists and a small number of offshore oil and gas permits. Mr. Biden has been under pressure from some Democrats to trumpet gains in oil production as a way of reaching out to voters who are leery of high gas prices.

LONDON, Nov 30 (Reuters) - A former Goldman Sachs (GS.N) analyst used confidential information to make more than 140,000 pounds ($176,800) from shares in listed companies, prosecutors told a London court on Thursday. Prosecutor Peter Carter said the brothers "used information which they should not have used – because it was private, confidential, price-sensitive information – to gamble effectively, to invest on the stock exchange". He told the jury that Goldman Sachs' internal policies strictly forbid any use of confidential information acquired by the investment bank or its employees. "To breach a confidence or to use confidential information improperly or carelessly would be unthinkable," the policy says. Carter said the policy was clear that employees are not allowed to use confidential information "other than for your work at (Goldman Sachs) and nothing else".

Trump's civil fraud trial, which could run him and Trump Org out of NY, is in its ninth week. A rep for Trump's biggest "victim," Deutsche Bank, testified Tuesday as an unlikely defense witness. AdvertisementDonald Trump's defense team tried to turn the tables at his civil fraud trial on Tuesday — calling a representative from his own biggest fraud victim, Deutsche Bank, to the witness stand in his defense. "We're expected to conduct due diligence and verify the information provided to the extent that's possible," the witness, Dave Williams, a Deutsche Bank managing director, told Trump's attorney Clifford Robert. How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump's company no longer prepares the sweeping financial statements that New York state contends were full of deceptive numbers for years, an executive testified Monday at the former president's civil fraud trial. Trump's 2014 to 2021 “statements of financial condition” are at the heart of state Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit against him, his company and some of its key figures. The defendants deny wrongdoing, but James says they misled lenders and insurers by giving them financial statements that greatly inflated Trump's asset values and overall net worth. Trump asserts that his wealth was understated, not overblown, on his financial statements. During cross-examination, Hawthorn acknowledged that Trump's financial statements could have been audited by the company, rather than just compiled, though he noted that auditing wasn't required.

U.S. gasoline prices are plunging just in time for Thanksgiving, and with the OPEC Plus oil cartel in apparent disarray, they could be heading lower for Christmas. But this week, they fell to levels not seen at this time of year since 2021, according to the AAA motor club, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine sent energy prices higher. “For consumers it’s a terrific tailwind,” said Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis at Oil Price Information Service. The price for a gallon of gas was $3.64 at the same time last year. Prices have dropped below $3 a gallon in more than a dozen states and are falling with particular speed in Montana, Florida and Colorado.

Trump's lawyers asked for a mistrial in their civil fraud trial in New York. AdvertisementThe mistrial filings — from Trump's lawyers Alina Habba, Christopher Kise, and Clifford Roberts — included quotes from the court transcript in which the lawyers first complained about Greenfield. Judge Arthur Engoron talks with his principal law clerk Allison Greenfield during the fraud trial for former President Donald Trump at New York Supreme Court. A summary judgement decision from Engoron — which Trump lawyers complain came less than a week before the trial — has already largely ruled in the attorney general's favor. After the ruling, Trump's lawyers can take it up with an appeals court, which will decide whether to let the trial stand.

The 4.6 million birds killed this year compares to the nearly 58 million birds the U.S. Department of Agriculture said were slaughtered last year in the first year of the outbreak. Retail turkey prices aren't tracked the same way, but USDA reports show that wholesale frozen turkey prices averaged $1.15 per pound in October, down from last year's $1.79 per pound and the previous year's $1.35 per pound. “I think there should be a lot of relief coming in the holiday season.”A combination of factors contributed to the sharp drop in bird flu cases this year. Officials say bird flu doesn’t represent a significant health threat. Bird flu vaccines are being developed and might help in the future, but at this point they remain impractical.

Nov 13 (Reuters) - Donald Trump Jr. testified on Monday about what he called the "sexiness" of his father's real estate portfolio, in his second time taking the stand in the former U.S. president's civil fraud trial. Donald Jr. said the "sexiness" of his father's real estate projects attracted licensing deals with other developers who wanted to emulate his style. "Let him go ahead and talk about how great the Trump Organization is," said Engoron, who has defended himself during the trial from allegations of bias from Trump and his lawyers. Donald Jr., Eric and Ivanka Trump said they were not involved in preparing their father's financial statements and left bookkeeping at the Trump Organization to accountants. Exxon Mobil said on Monday that it planned to set up a facility in Arkansas to produce lithium, a critical raw material for electric vehicles, which pose one of the biggest challenges to the company’s oil business. It could also open the door for southern Arkansas to emerge as a major source of lithium. Most of the metal today comes from Australia and South America and much of it is processed in China. “Electrification is going to be a major component of the energy transition and we bring highly relevant experience to the production of lithium,” Dan Ammann, president of Exxon Mobil Low Carbon Solutions and a former top executive at General Motors, said in an interview. “We see an opportunity to deploy that will be highly profitable.”

It was going to include 98 turbines located 15 miles off the coast of southern New Jersey. The others will use a combination of renewables, nuclear power, and natural gas with carbon capture and storage. Putting federal money behind a program to fight climate change while using natural gas, a fossil fuel, as one of its main ingredients may not seem intuitive. To wit, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, where the funding for the hydrogen hubs comes from, specifically required that two of the selected hydrogen hubs be located in natural gas-rich regions. Making hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture will require additional energy and be more expensive than producing hydrogen from natural gas where the excess carbon emissions just spew into the atmosphere. That is what the U.S. government is trying to change with its hydrogen hubs program and the production tax credit.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, and Vera Jourova, a vice president, will attend the summit, according to an update to their official calendars published on Friday. While Sunak hopes to secure Britain's role as a world leader in AI regulation, some have questioned what the summit will achieve in practice. Last week, Bloomberg reported a number of world leaders - including Germany's Olaf Scholz and Canada's Justin Trudeau - would not be attending. While several world leaders, including U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, are expected to attend the summit, the full guest list has not been made public. Matt Clifford, a tech investor and one of two chief organisers of the event, recently told Reuters the aim of the summit was to kickstart international dialogue on AI regulation.
