CNN —Tardigrades, also known as water bears, commonly survive in some of Earth’s most challenging environments. Under stress in extreme cold or other harsh environmental conditions, tardigrades’ bodies produce unstable free radicals of oxygen and an unpaired electron, aka a reactive oxygen species that can wreak havoc on the body’s proteins and DNA if they overaccumulate. The survival mechanism kicks off when cysteines, one of the amino acids that forms proteins in the body, come into contact with these oxygen free radicals and becomes oxidized, the researchers found. The free radicals become, so to speak, the hammer used to smash the glass on a fire alarm. “We came up with this idea (that) maybe it’s those species that are actually signaling to the tardigrades to enter their tun state,” she said.

CNN —Celebrities, editors and designers are congregating in Paris this week for the hotly anticipated Spring-Summer 2024 collections at Haute Couture Fashion Week, which showcases the industry’s most elite and decadent looks — both on and off the catwalks. The week kicked off on Schiaparelli’s runway, and the stars were out in full force. Also in attendance, Jennifer Lopez commanded attention in an elaborate petaled white coat, paired with opulent surrealist-style gold eyebrow glasses and chunky golden jewelry. They were joined by Natalie Portman, Ali Wong and Elizabeth Debicki, among others, to take in the house’s latest Haute Couture collection. Tessa Barton and Cole Herrmann lived in a 250-square-foot New York studio apartment, with a showerhead that spit brown water and a radiator capable of giving second-degree burns. She and Herrmann, a software engineer, realized they could bottle up her aesthetic into pre-made photo filters and sell them. That idea is now Tezza, a Los Angeles-based company that makes collage kits, apparel and its claim-to-fame photo editing app. Barton and her photo collage wall, in the couple's New York studio apartment. Tezza is best known as a photo editing app, currently ranking between competitors Lightroom and VSCO on Apple's app store.
