Narcan nasal spray quickly reverses an overdose from heroin and prescription painkillers. The Food and Drug Administration's independent advisors on Wednesday unanimously recommended over-the-counter use of the nasal spray Narcan to reverse opioid overdoses, which would significantly expand access to the life-saving treatment. Emergent BioSolutions ' Narcan is the most commonly sold treatment for opioid overdoses. Emergent BioSolutions said Narcan would be available for the over-the-counter market by late summer if the FDA approves it next month. Opioid overdose deaths spiked 17% during the pandemic from about 69,000 in 2020 to nearly 81,000 in 2021.
Orange juice prices, meanwhile, are notching record highs, and have spiked 30% year-to-date. Egg prices jumped 70% in a year, with high production costs nudging 12 eggs to a record price of $4.82 last month. Wholesale eggs price are lowering on a weekly basis, however, but this hasn't hit grocery stores quite yet. On the contrary, ground beef prices have fallen from record levels, resulting in a dozen eggs costing more than a pound of ground chuck. Elsewhere, orange juice prices notched record highs, surging 30% year-to-date as recent hurricanes, frost, and a plant disease hit production levels.

California is special, as it routinely proves. The latest example is the price of eggs, which have reached upward of $7 for a carton as the Golden State’s cage-free chicken law comes home to roost. Californians pride themselves on being in the forefront of progressive political fashion. And true to form, in 2018 voters approved a ballot measure (Prop. 12) backed by the Humane Society banning the sale in the state of eggs that come from caged hens.

Grocery shoppers, frustrated by the record prices of a dozen eggs, are increasingly choosing to go right to the source by bringing chickens home. The price for a carton of eggs is up 60% year-over-year, according to the latest Consumer Price Index. Eggs are just one example out of hundreds of items that eat further into Americans’ budgets than they did a few years ago. Some shoppers hope a do-it-yourself approach to eggs will help stretch their budgets, and bring a little joy to their backyards.
Three people were arrested in the death of an 11-year-old girl who was killed in a drive-by shooting as she walked home from a nearby corner store, Syracuse, New York, police said. Brexialee Torres-Ortiz had left her home on Jan. 16 to buy a carton of milk for her family. She was returning home when the suspects allegedly opened fire from a car, targeting a 19-year-old boy. The third suspect, an unidentified 16-year-old boy, was arrested in Lincolndale, New York, with the assistance of state police, authorities in Syracuse tweeted Friday morning. Fitzpatrick said the 16-year-old was a "resident of a juvenile facility" and was on furlough from the facility on the day Brexialee was killed.
Advocacy group Farm Action and others have asked the FTC to investigate price gouging, pointing to record profits. Egg companies and some experts say a new strain of avian flu, packaging, and transport costs justify the price. While egg companies claim an outbreak of avian flu, combined with inflated transportation and packaging costs, justify record-high prices, others are calling foul. "Somebody needs to pay attention, and we didn't really see anyone asking why," Joe Van Wye, Farm Action's director of policy and outreach, told Insider. The FTC declined to comment on the letters, and Cal-Maine Foods and Sen. Reed did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.
MrBeast's girlfriend, Thea Booysen, filmed him swigging egg whites and chocolate syrup. The YouTuber has been open about lifestyle habits he believes are required to be the most successful YouTuber in the world. And on Wednesday, Donaldson's girlfriend – the Twitch streamer and author Thea Booysen – gave a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into what his unusual life can look like. In a since-evaporated Instagram Story on Wednesday, Booysen filmed the YouTuber guzzling raw egg whites straight from the carton. In a subsequent story, Donaldson poured chocolate syrup into a cup filled with a yellowish-white liquid – presumably the egg whites, before swigging that down as well.
Egg prices in some states doubled in December, compared with the same month in 2021, according to data from Instacart. Even so, the highest prices for a dozen eggs were in other states, such as Hawaii and Florida. Egg prices increased the most in upper Midwestern states year-over-year in December, according to Instacart. In 2019, chickens on its farms produced just over 17 billion eggs, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Despite the increases, states like Iowa still had some of the lowest egg prices in the US.
Across Wall Street, finance workers of all stripes are returning to work after skiing, gallivanting around the Caribbean, or just visiting Mom for the holiday season. Of course, there's some uncertainty in all this, and Wall Street could still be proved right. Already some Wall Street economists are revising their predictions given the strong economy, even if they're not backing off their priors quite yet. It may take years to get the Chinese consumer, on which Wall Street has placed so many hopes, back to the strength of yesteryear. Don't hatchet your chickens before they countTo be fair, not every Wall Street analyst is looking sheepish right now.
Shoppers in California can expect the priciest eggs at nearly $8 for a dozen, The Washington Post reports. One user joked about painting potatoes instead of eggs for their Easter celebration. The deadly infection kills 90% to 100% of affected chickens within a couple of days, according to information reported by Insider's Alex Bitter. California shoppers reportedly face an even steeper price, paying about $7.37 for only a dozen, according to the Washington Post. Most farms affected in 2022 are already back to laying and supplying eggs again," Metz said, according to the report.

Keep an eye on the 3,800 level as the market sell-off picks up once again and investors put their hopes on a yearend rally, UBS' Art Cashin told CNBC's " Squawk on the Street " on Thursday. "That one-two combination this morning has us down, testing a very important 3,800 level in the S & P," he said. The comments from Cashin come after Tepper, the founder of Appaloosa Management, told CNBC on Thursday that he's bearish on the stock market heading into 2023. Oatly – Shares of the oat-based drinks maker tumbled 11% after the company reported a larger-than-expected quarterly loss and revenue that fell short of consensus. Amazon – Amazon fell 1.4% following a report that it plans to lay off about 10,000 employees as soon as this week. Yet chicken prices fell in October. It may seem counterintuitive that egg and chicken prices moved in opposite directions. The last bout was in 2015, when a record 50.5 million birds were impacted, the CDC said. Elevated egg prices "could last into the first quarter of 2023," Lapp said. 'Broilers' are less affected by flu than 'layers'Meanwhile, chicken prices retreated in October, falling by 1.3% during the month.

New York CNNBusiness —There’s at least one item in the grocery store that is getting less expensive: avocados. A significant supply glut of the buttery fruit has triggered a drop in wholesale prices, sending store prices lower as well. A glut of global avocado supply has triggered a significant drop in prices. “In the first half of 2022, avocado shipments from Mexico were 25% lower compared to the record-high shipments we saw in 2021,” said Magana. Those regulations were quickly lifted, but not before causing a further run-up in store prices.
BIG PICTUREThe Fed is operating on data that’s offered a murky view of the economy’s health in recent months. On one hand, the housing market is cooling off markedly, but higher borrowing costs so far haven’t made a dent in inflation. That may reassure the Fed that there’s room to keep rate hikes going without triggering a recession. There is a glut of avocados in America and that’s triggered a steep drop in wholesale prices. Don’t yell at me, I don’t make the rules…Anyway, starting Thursday, it’s festive cup season, which Starbucks fans seem excited for.
Anthony Scaramucci poked fun at British Prime Minister Liz Truss' abrupt resignation. Scaramucci congratulated Truss for lasting longer than he did in the White House. Truss did not outlast a head of lettuce which a British tabloid had pitted against her. "1 Scaramucci = carton of milk 1 Truss = head of lettuce," Scaramucci wrote on Twitter. That means Truss lasted "4.1 Scaramuccis," rounding up, of course.

The CIA on Saturday unveiled the model of Ayman al-Zawahiri’s safe house in Kabul used to plan the U.S. drone strike that killed the Al-Qaeda leader last month. The scale model of Zawahiri’s house was shown to reporters as part of a tour of a newly refurbished museum at the agency's headquarters. “This was the model that was used to brief President Biden on the Zawahiri mission,” said Janelle Neises, deputy director of the CIA museum. Zawahiri was struck by a Hellfire missile as he stood on the balcony of the house, U.S. officials say. “He carved a trail of murder and violence against American citizens, American service members, American diplomats and American interests,” Biden said.
