6 National Parks You Don’t Know About (But Should)

MAKE WAY FOR A MOOSE A hiker in Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park yields the right-of-way on the Minong Ridge Trail. Photo: Jim West/imageBROKER/ShutterstockWITH THEIR mile-deep sandstone canyons, glacier-polished granite domes and herds of charismatic megafauna, it’s no wonder that America’s national parks received nearly 312-million visits in 2022. A staggering 25% of those visitors descended upon just nine of the Park Service’s 424 designated areas. Too often, these crowds funnel into narrow byways, creating headaches and traffic jams—and negating the very thing most parkgoers crave: solitude.

Driving Lamborghini's new off-road supercar

I was driving a $380,000 Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato, and I couldn’t help laughing out loud. Lamborghini worked with Bridgestone to create tires using rubber similar to that on Lamborghini’s other performance tires, but with an off-road tread. The idea for it emerged while Lamborghini engineers and designers were having beers after a day driving off-road in a prototype of the Urus SUV. That was a lot of fun, they thought, but wouldn’t driving one of our all-wheel-drive supercars off-road be even better? Even those of us who can’t afford one should perhaps be glad the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato exists.
This Summer We’re Helping Scientists Track Birds. This data will help scientists understand better how birds are affected by forces like climate change and habitat loss. We’re obviously a little bit biased here, so I’m going to recommend the Merlin Bird ID app. Nearly half of all bird species worldwide are known or suspected to be in decline, and climate change could accelerate this trend. Look up past reports of that species on the eBird Species Map and zoom in on your city.

As you enter the world, remember, too, how beautiful this place is. It will make you feel better about the mess your species has made of things if you can find a way to help. Being in the wild world will make you feel better. I promise you will feel better. Fall in love with the wild world, and you are taking the first step toward saving it.
Utah's new flag design is ruffling feathers, and people are already trying to replace it. Spencer Cox said that he should "have known better" that the new flag would be unpopular. Brandon Beckham, a member of Utah's Republican party central committee, told the Journal that the new design is "just a logo." "The original Utah flag has built in its ideals that are true to the founding of the state that are linked to history," Beckham told the Journal. Ryan Woods, a conservative drag performer known as Lady MAGA USA, said the change flies in the face of history.
Last month, Ryan Shelton took his 2017 Tesla Model S on a road trip for the first time. Ryan Shelton bought his Tesla a year ago but hadn't taken it on a road trip until April. The terrain trapShelton's trip took so long because of the route's hilly terrain. "I was going through these canyons, so I'm going really, really high uphills and really up and down, up and down, up and down," he said. The terrain and camp mode forced Shelton to twice charge his Tesla, which took three hours each time.
But you don’t have to totally cut out travel or stay super close to home to be a good planetary citizen. You need a city that’s dedicated to getting it right to best enjoy an urban biking vacation. Matt Udkow / Santa Barbara County Fire Department via AP fileWhy is California prone to mudslides? Since New Year’s Eve, the California Department of Conservation’s landslide mapping team has documented more than 300 landslides. Lancaster said California has dramatically increased its efforts to identify hotspots since the Montecito mudslides. After the 2018 mudslides hit Montecito, the Los Angeles Times reported that debris basins above the community were undersized and hadn’t been sufficiently emptied. The organization hired an engineering company to map the canyons and installed debris nets.

Jan 16 (Reuters) - Authorities in California were set to assess damage on Monday after a wave of storms killed at least 19 people, swept away scores of homes and forced thousands to evacuate. Small rainstorms lingered early on Monday from San Francisco through central California and a few inches of snow fell on the foothills of the Sierras, the National Weather Service reported. "It's coming to an end as we speak," said meteorologist William Churchill on Monday morning at the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. Outside the United States, countries including India are also beginning to increase the use of recharge ponds to store water in natural or human-made aquifers. While the idea of storing water underground is not new, a recent California law regulating groundwater use has spurred a spate of projects that the state is helping to fund. The new pond, on about 20 acres of former farmland , will help to guide water underground to store it for residents as well as agriculture. Since then the state's population has nearly doubled to 40 million residents.
The lawsuit filed on Thursday is the latest development in the high-profile case around Gabby Petito’s death. In doing so, the lawsuit alleges officers disregarded signs of violence they should have been trained to notice. The suit also alleges police officers “coached Gabby to provide answers that the officers used to justify their decision not to enforce Utah law,” which requires action be taken in response to domestic violence incidents. “Our officers acted with kindness, respect, and empathy toward Ms. Petito,” city spokesperson Lisa Adams said in a statement. An independent investigation in January faulted police for making “several unintentional mistakes” including not issuing a domestic violence citation after Petito told police she had hit her fiancé.

A Texas hiker is warning other outdoor enthusiasts to beware of bison through a viral TikTok video that shows one charging her on a trail, sending her to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Clark, the Texas Park and Wildlife Department, and United Regional Wichita Falls, the hospital where Clark said she received treatment, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Once nearly extinct, bison now number half a million, with most part of private herds, according to the Texas Park and Wildlife Department. Caprock Canyons State Park is the home of the Texas State Bison Herd, which is monitored by park officials, according to the department. "As a rule, bison require at least 50 yards (half a football field) between them and people," the Texas Park and Wildlife Department said.

CNN —The feeling of total vulnerability is something that would prevent most from trying rock climbing, but for Lor Sabourin, it’s what they love most about the sport. When you go out, you’re really choosing to be vulnerable,” Sabourin tells CNN Sport. It provided Sabourin with a chance to speak about their journey and address what it means for them to be a trans climber in 2021. There are also times in normal life where Sabourin feels less safe than their non-trans friends. “I guess that’s really challenging, especially having a background of experiencing pretty extreme violence at a young age for my identity,” they said.
