Marjorie Taylor Greene sent $2,000 checks to 18 of her colleagues' campaigns in March. But spokespeople for two of those vulnerable Republicans — Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin and Rep. Michelle Steel of California — now say that their campaigns didn't end up cashing the checks. Though the March 29 contributions appear in Greene's campaign filings with the Federal Election Commission, they never appeared in Van Orden or Steel's filings. Greene's campaign, which did not respond to Insider's request for comment, has not amended its filings with the Federal Election Commission to reflect that the checks were never cashed. Van Orden represents a swing district, and Democrats are eager to tie more vulnerable Republican candidates to the party's electorally toxic far right.

CNN —A group of eight House Republicans joined with Democrats Tuesday in a historic vote to remove Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker. The vote in the House of Representatives on the motion to vacate was 216-210, with Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz leading the effort. Because of the GOP’s razor-thin majority in the House and a Democratic conference united against him, McCarthy needed the support of nearly all of his party’s members to keep the gavel. It was not immediately clear who would replace the California Republican, and GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina was named speaker in the interim. The move comes weeks after Digital World investors voted to give up to a one-year extension to complete the much-delayed deal. The blank-check firm amended the merger agreement on Sept. 29, according to the filing, which also disclosed that Digital World can terminate the agreement only in that three-week period in November. Digital World has faced a series of challenges since it stuck a merger deal with Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) on October 2021. If the merger closes, Trump Media would gain access to more than $1 billion in cash from DWAC's institutional investors, such as hedge funds. According to a Feb. 2, 2021 services agreement, Trump controls 90% of Trump Media.

Rep. Matt Gaetz formally sought to remove the House speaker on Monday evening, filing a motion to vacate that would force Kevin McCarthy from his post in what will be a historic clash within the chamber’s Republican caucus in the days to come. “It is becoming increasingly clear who the speaker of the House already works for, and it’s not the Republican conference,” the Florida Republican said. And though it only takes one lawmaker to bring up a vote to vacate the speaker, it would require a majority of voting lawmakers to succeed. In turn, they gained the power to bring up a motion to vacate the speaker – lowering the threshold to just a single lawmaker’s request. McCarthy has repeatedly brushed off the threats, touting his fight for speaker as an example of his resilience.
