It was a combination of the skill of the flight crew and good luck that no one was killed. But there were problems with five rivets near where the door plug was installed, and Boeing workers removed the door plug in order to fix those rivets. It would have had much more difficulty making it safely to the ground if the door plug had failed hours, rather than minutes, from the nearest runway. But the probe is only one of the problems Boeing faces because of the incident. He has faced harsh criticism for many of Boeing’s problems, with more than a dozen whistleblowers at the company complaining to congressional investigators that they faced pressure and retaliation for flagging safety problems in the company’s assembly process.

I have to make a confession: Kamala Harris had a much stronger start than I expected. She appears competent, in command and she is connecting to voters — everything she wasn’t when she ran for president five years ago. Gail Collins: Bret! Bret: I’m not there yet, though the rumored choice of Josh Shapiro, the Pennsylvania governor, as her running mate would go far to reassure me about a Harris administration. Gail: Certainly seems to make sense politically — guy from a very important state, with a moderate image that might reassure Democrats who are worried that Harris is too far to the left.

Serious problems to solveOrtberg will have his hands full fixing the problems at Boeing, which has not posted a profitable year since 2019. It recently agreed to plead guilty to charges that its employees defrauded the Federal Aviation Administration during the original certification process for the 737 Max. The company has come under renewed scrutiny since a 737 Max plane’s door plug blew off shortly after takeoff in January. But that will keep the losses building at Boeing as it can’t make money at its current level of production.

At the risk of mixing medieval metaphors, dragons are a double-edged sword. For Ryan Condal, the co-creator and showrunner of HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” the creatures are key to the show’s magic, literally and figuratively. “They are the one fantasy element that we’ve allowed ourselves,” he said. “In our world, in this period, the magic is these dragons.”But they are also death incarnate. “You take the city with an army if you want it to be standing afterward.

Is 100 Days Enough Time to Pick a Leader? But in many other democracies, an official election period sets out when candidates can debate, make speeches and run political ads (often with strict spending limits). “We know from other countries that 100 days is plenty of time for a healthy campaign,” said Mr. Tama. “Most campaigns in different countries are in the range of a few weeks to several months.”Even in India, the largest democracy in the world, the official campaign only starts a little over a month before voting begins. And in India in 2014, Narendra Modi had six months after his party chose him as leader to wage his successful campaign for prime minister.
