After making $200 off her own used clothes, she turned to some of her favorite places to shop: thrift stores. Much of her business' growth came from her dorm room at Duke University, where she graduated last year with a degree in psychology. I had maybe 200 or so items in my dorm room my sophomore year, and now I have 1,300 items [in a storage unit]." How much cash do you need to start a thrifting side hustle? [In terms of the thrifting], you can start with as little as $5.

It's been a bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000, but the overall trend stays with big cap tech. Talk about timing: It launched just as the S & P 500 was recovering from the banking crisis, and MAGS has been one of the star ETF performers of the last year. A bumpy road from 4,000 to 5,000 The S & P 500 had been comfortably over 4,000 from mid-2021 into mid-2022, when rising rates pushed the broad index below 4,000. This is true not just this year, but since the S & P went over 4,000 at the end of March, as has international investing. If you own the S & P 500, which has become tech-dominant, you are happy.

If you're like most people, you may not have an emergency savings fund. It's not necessarily our fault, experts say, as our brains are programmed to focus on our needs today. He and other financial advisors typically recommend having at least three to six months' living expenses set aside in case of an abrupt change in income or unexpected event. At that point, it doesn't feel like as much of a stretch to set aside 20% of your income toward retirement and 5% toward an emergency fund. Financial advisors often see this barrier to savings with their clients and have their own tactics for nudging clients to set aside more cash and free up flexibility in their budgets.

Apple and Nvidia are "own, don't trade" stocks, so should they be kept as they are, or shrink down? First, let's address our idea of "own, don't trade" stocks. To main a diversified portfolio, we don't want any of our positions, even Apple, to get much bigger than 5-6%. That doesn't mean we don't love the name or no longer view it as an "own, don't trade," it simply means that while it is an "own, don't trade" we also still abide by the view that discipline trumps conviction (diversification and not don't be greedy being the two disciplines of focus in this case) and that overrides the own, don't trade mantra. When we say "don't trade" these two names, we stay invested in both and don't try to catch the next 10% move up or down.

However, the reason Apple is designated an "own it, don't trade" stock is because near-term catalysts are less important than the longer-term trajectory. If 2023 taught us anything it's that the stock market will always surprise you. – Thank you, Cathryn, San Francisco We certainly understand and agree it's becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a diversified portfolio that's not dominated by technology stocks. There are also what many investors would think of as tech companies in S & P 500 Communication Services , at an 8.6% weighting. After all, we would say Meta, Alphabet and Amazon are as much tech companies as Apple or Microsoft, with all three considered leaders in artificial intelligence. These are industrial technology companies, not the industrial companies of old. So, using some of the examples provided in the question: Yes, Microsoft and Apple are both considered Information Technology companies.

CNBC is now accepting nominations for the 2024 Disruptor 50 list — our annual look at the most innovative venture-backed companies using breakthrough technology to meet increasing economic and consumer challenges. A notable past Disruptor 50 company that made it to the public market this year, Instacart , has failed to maintain its IPO pricing. Business failures, too, have occurred for formerly high-flying, high-profile backed Disruptor 50 companies, including Convoy and WeWork. This is especially true of companies involved in the booming AI hype cycle sparked by 2023's top Disruptor 50 company, OpenAI, just over a year ago. 2024 honorees will be notified in April, and the list will be released in May across CNBC's TV and digital platforms.

How do you sell your vision of the future to win hearts and minds when many people are focused on the impacts of the economic downturn? Check out the speakers' list and agenda here.
