The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris drew a combined average of 30.6 million viewers across NBCU’s constellation of platforms, marking an 82% jump in viewership compared to the Tokyo Games and making the Games the most-streamed Olympics of all time. The network’s Spanish-language broadcast on Telemundo also saw a 26% jump over the same period during the Tokyo Games three years ago. “The Olympics reestablished its unique power to reassemble the American media audience,” said Gary Zenkel, the NBC Olympics president. “NBC Nightly News” anchored by Lester Holt averaged 7.6 million viewers during the two-week period, and the “Today” show averaged 3.1 million viewers, the network said. Last month, Comcast reported the streamer had lost 500,000 subscribers in the second quarter, falling to 33 million total, well below Netflix’s 277 million subscribers and Disney’s 153.6 million.

In conversations with nearly a dozen Democratic lawmakers and candidates running in competitive races across the country, a common theme emerged. Tim Walz, Democrats have felt a tangible bump of energy in their districts, through spikes in volunteers, donations and event turnout. Rep. Chris Deluzio, who supports Harris, told CNN he was glad to see that she has moved away from her previous position on fracking. The Republican campaign arm has seized on some of her past positions from his first presidential run, including fracking, as they’ve attempted to develop a strategy to target Democrats in tough races. In July 2022, three months after graduating, I started a full-time software engineering job at Amazon after applying and interviewing for the role. I enjoyed working remotely at AmazonWhen I started working at Amazon, the job was fully remote. I went into the Toronto office a couple of times, but it was super empty. I visited the Vancouver office twice when the company flew me out for social events. Amazon asked employees to RTO and, in some cases, relocate to a new cityI liked remote work and not having to waste time commuting.

In just a few short days, markets have taken some of the urgency off the table for the Federal Reserve to slash interest rates. Earlier in the week, there were even some calls for an emergency intermeeting rate cut. At the least, markets figured the Fed was a near-certainty to reduce benchmark rates by at least a half percentage point. Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel has been one of the loudest voices for aggressive Fed action, calling Monday for an emergency cut . The Fed has been holding its benchmark rate in a range between 5.25%-5.50% for more than a year.

Look out for the Social Security tax torpedo. It may be heading toward the hull of your retirement accounts as we speak. I’m in favor of taxing Social Security benefits, as the United States has done since 1983. In certain circumstances, because of the tax torpedo and another twist nicknamed the capital gains bump zone, someone in the 12 percent tax bracket who takes a $1,000 retirement distribution could end up paying $499.50 in tax — for a marginal rate of nearly 50 percent. There are ways to protect yourself from paying more tax than necessary, but they’re not simple.

The federal minimum wage, which has been stuck at $7.25 an hour for 15 years. Given the situation, here's an idea: Why not raise the federal minimum wage right now? Getting anything done legislatively is always a challenge, especially in an election year, but polls indicate a higher minimum wage is broadly popular. AdvertisementOnce the minimum wage gets so high that it starts to cause a bunch of job loss, that's a problem. If a higher minimum wage lifts millions of people out of poverty, that's incredible.

It's a troubling thought, to be sure, but a longer workweek is already a reality for some workers. AdvertisementIt's the kind of thing that could make an employer less inclined to try something new — like a four-day workweek. Yet even without lackluster sales, Cappelli said, the four-day workweek was already unlikely to be widely adopted in the US. But, at the same time, Cappelli also doesn't think companies will push workers to come in on a sixth day. If companies use economic worries to reverse course on efforts like flexible work arrangements or to conduct layoffs, they put their own well-being at risk.
