CNN —Molly Manning Walker learned she was a two-time BAFTA nominee at the unholy hour of 5 AM. That’s not to say Manning Walker is a world apart from the young subjects of her film. The film, Manning Walker’s first feature, was a hit at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it won top prize in the Un Certain Regard competition. Almost exactly 250 years after the Sons of Liberty dumped chests of tea into Boston Harbour, a professor from Bryn Mawr College has committed a crime against the British cuppa very nearly as grave. What purports to be a nice cuppa accompanied not by good honest cow’s milk but some kind of yellow citrus thing. Or, god forbid, arrives not in a good honest tea bag, but taking the false form of — shudder — tea leaves. You’re offered a cuppa char if you’ve given birth, witnessed a murder, come home from a crappy day at work. Whether in the seas of Boston Harbour or some mad prof’s lab in rural Pennsylvania, tea and salt do not mix and that, my Yank friends, is that.

Britain’s media has reacted with fury and bewilderment after a US scientist claimed the perfect cup of tea is made with a pinch of added salt. “I guess we are going to war again?” legal journalist Molly Quell wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “We cannot stand idly by as such an outrageous proposal threatens the very foundation of our Special Relationship,” the embassy wrote in a viral X post. Francl also found little sympathy in the British press, which took her suggestion with more than a pinch of salt. In the meantime, the embassy said it “will continue to make tea in the proper way – by microwaving it.”

While throwing up a middle finger today clearly communicates a resounding “f**k you,” in classical society, historians say a middle finger was more of a ribald sexual reference. Proudly displaying a middle finger was usually a joke, an insult or a sexual proposition, Nelson and other classical researchers posit. Morris has said that the middle finger landed in the US with Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. Anti-establishment artists from Joe Strummer of The Clash to Tupac Shakur have pointed a middle finger at the ruling class in their work — and, in famous photos, literally. The singer appeared during Madonna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show and flexed her middle finger toward the camera, prompting the NFL and NBC to apologize.

Features include the ability to choose from 6,000 U.S. stocks and 24-hour trading five days a week. Robinhood currently offers 24-hour trading in the U.S., allowing trades to happen outside 9:30 a.m. Robinhood won't offer U.K. stocks to begin with but will look to add them as it brings more products into the platform. Jordan Sinclair, Robinhood's U.K. chief, said he expects 24-hour trading to be popular, as it will let users trade on market-moving news. Dan Moczulski, U.K. managing director of EToro, a rival stock trading platform, said the arrival of more competition in the retail trading market marks "an exciting time for the industry."

Costco sells some American brands and products that aren't commonly available in the UK. Candy brands I saw at Costco included Red Vines licorice, Mike and Ike candy, and Welch's Fruit Snacks. CNN —Responses to the recent statements by the commander in chief of the Ukrainian military, Valery Zaluzhny, warning of a stalemate war between Ukraine and Russia, have been varied and revealing. On the other side, skeptics of Western support for Ukraine gloatingly cited the interview as evidence that Ukraine should have capitulated at some imagined earlier opportunity. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyi meets with the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg on September 28, 2023 in Kyiv, Ukraine. LONDON — The Bank of England on Thursday left interest rates unchanged, but said monetary policy will likely need to stay tight for an "extended period of time." The Monetary Policy Committee voted 6-3 in favor of keeping the main Bank rate at 5.25%, with three members preferring another 25-basis point hike to 5.5%. "The MPC's latest projections indicate that monetary policy is likely to need to be restrictive for an extended period of time. Further tightening in monetary policy would be required if there were evidence of more persistent inflationary pressures," the MPC said in its Thursday statement. It added that monetary policy will need to be "sufficiently restrictive for sufficiently long" to return inflation to the 2% target sustainably.

He says he had considered the idea ludicrous as someone who's gay and used to be an atheist. And it was also a big shift for someone who was living abroad in the Hague, who's openly gay, and who was heavily invested in a different career. I thought it was completely ludicrous, as someone who used to be quite atheist as a teen, who's gay, and who'd been preparing for an entirely different career.
