Strikes at German regional airports ground majority of flights
  + stars: | 2023-02-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BERLIN, Feb 27 (Reuters) - The majority of flights at Germany's Duesseldorf and Cologne Bonn regional airports were grounded by a 24-hour strike by the Verdi trade union on Monday, the airports said. Of Monday's usual 136 daily passenger flights scheduled for Cologne Bonn airport, only two were set to operate as scheduled. The union brought air traffic to a standstill earlier this month with one-day strikes at seven major airports, including the Frankfurt and Munich hubs, affecting nearly 300,000 passengers. Cities across the western state of North Rhine Westphalia, including Cologne, Leverkusen and Bonn, were also affected by public service worker strikes on Monday. Verdi and the German Civil Service Association are demanding 10.5% more pay for state employees, or at least 500 euros ($527.75) more a month.

I work with refugees, and I continue to do my work, but I am now a refugee, too. Kateryna Shukh, center, says she has found solace in supporting other Ukrainian refugees by hosting art therapy sessions from her new home in Warsaw, Poland. Kateryna ShukhIn Poland, for example, Ukrainian refugees have the legal right to remain for 18 months, with the possibility of applying for a three-year temporary residence permit. "Maybe 20% have gone back (to Ukraine) already," Shukh said of the refugees she works with.

A German court this week sentenced tax lawyer Hanno Berger, alleged to have masterminded one of the country's biggest post-war frauds, to eight years in jail. It is the highest-profile prosecution and longest sentence to date in a series of trials that have also convicted British bankers. Although Britain was not impacted by cum-ex trading, much of the structuring and organising of the scheme took place in London, according to lawyers and authorities, some of whom turned to the country for help unpicking what had happened. It does not have the power to investigate tax fraud, but can investigate civil and criminal market abuse. One warning notice was sent in June 2020 to an unnamed former chief executive, according to a 2021 High Court judgment.
His centre-left Social Democrats, the Greens and liberal Free Democrats, have had to wrangle to reach compromises, sometimes delaying decisions. Some European allies say the focus on domestic challenges and internal politicking have distracted Berlin from regional cooperation and especially the key German-French motor that traditionally drives the European Union. Relief measures worth hundreds of billions of euros have helped Scholz's coalition stave off serious social unrest due to soaring energy prices in the wake of the Ukraine war, but recent polls suggest it has lost its majority. MIXED MESSAGESTo be sure, Germany's allies have welcomed the Zeitenwende after years of warning the country of complacency on security. The government may for example not reach the NATO spending goal until 2025, a spokesman said this week.
Fossil-fuel interests are fighting for natural gas at the United Nations' COP27 climate summit. But natural gas is mostly methane — a greenhouse gas 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide — and it leaks. One-third of the fossil fuel lobbyists Global Witness identified are registered as part of national delegations, according to Dominic Kavakeb, a spokesperson for Global Witness. Fossil fuel influence threatens to undermine progress on one of the most powerful, immediate climate solutions: ending human methane emissions. While methane's consequences are severe, the good news is that countries and industries can quickly slow climate change by cutting methane emissions.
One person was in a meeting when they suddenly dropped off the call, sources told The New York Times. At least one Twitter employee was booted from the company's system in the middle of a call about Twitter Blue, three sources familiar with the meeting told The New York Times. "This is a master class in how not to do it," Sandra Sucher, a Harvard University professor who studies layoffs, told the Times, noting it was uncommon to see layoffs of this scale done so rapidly without a clear explanation. Rachel Bonn, a former Twitter employee who is eight months pregnant, said she lost access to her work laptop Thursday night hours after Musk said layoffs were coming. Another former Twitter employee, Chris Younie, said he was also abruptly unable to turn on his work laptop or log into his emails at around 3 a.m. on Friday.
The company's content moderation team is expected to be a target of the cuts, tweets from Twitter employees suggested on Friday. Twitter employees vented their frustrations about the layoffs on the social network, using the hashtag #OneTeam. User Rachel Bonn tweeted: "Last Thursday in the SF (San Francisco) office, really the last day Twitter was Twitter. The company's office in Piccadilly Circus, London, appeared deserted on Friday, with no employees in sight. Employees told Reuters they were left to piece together information through media reports, private messaging groups and anonymous forums.
The International Committee of the Red Cross proposed creating a digital equivalent to its distinctive red symbol to warn off hackers who attempt to break into medical institutions’ networks. Such a digital emblem would deter some but not all hackers, Red Cross advisers say, at a time when hospitals are frequently hit with cyberattacks. The Red Cross and its cyber advisers worked for more than two years on the project. Whatever option governments choose would need to be simple to install, said Matthew Smith, a professor of computer science at the University of Bonn in Germany, speaking at the Red Cross event. “As easy as placing a red cross on a building,” he said.
A Twitter employee who's eight months pregnant says her laptop access was "cut off" on Thursday. Rachel Bonn tweeted just hours after a memo was sent to staff announcing mass layoffs on Friday. Rachel Bonn tweeted an image of herself with her nine-month-old baby in front of rows of pumpkins. "Last Thursday in the SF office, really the last day Twitter was Twitter. Just got cut off from laptop access #LoveWhereYouWorked," Bonn tweeted at about 10:00 p.m. San Francisco time on Thursday.
A revised draft of their summit conclusions said EU leaders would broadly endorse the proposals - including plans to launch an alternative price benchmark for liquefied natural gas and start joint gas buying among EU countries. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterThe proposals each need support from a reinforced majority of EU countries - at least 15 members representing at least 65% of the bloc's population. EU leaders look set to back that idea, asking Brussels to examine a "temporary dynamic price corridor" on gas transactions, according to their draft conclusions. The conclusions may struggle to win support from all leaders, since countries are split over the Iberian mechanism. The draft conclusions said a price cap on gas used for power generation must avoid increasing gas consumption.

An aircraft stands on the airfield as pilots at Lufthansa's budget airline Eurowings go on a one-day strike at Cologne-Bonn airport, Germany, October, 6, 2022. REUTERS/Benjamin WesthoffFRANKFURT, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Lufthansa's (LHAG.DE) budget division Eurowings warned on Saturday that pilots' demands to ease their workloads is putting jobs at the airline at risk. The union wants Eurowings to lighten pilots' workloads by, for example, increasing their rest periods. "The union's position eats away at the prospects of Eurowings Germany," the airline said. A one-day strike earlier this month saw Eurowings operate at half capacity, affecting around 30,000 passengers.
“This is the size of the German economy — a massive setback for the world economy,” she said. Those will be lowered again when the IMF releases its latest World Economic Outlook report next week, Georgieva said. “In less than three years, we lived through shock, after shock, after shock,” the Bulgarian economist said. She urged policymakers to stay the course on fighting inflation but cautioned that tightening monetary policy too much could hurl the globe into a prolonged recessionary period. “Uncertainty remains extremely high in the context of war and pandemic.

But its current leading man, its MVP for the month, is Jeffrey Dahmer, the notorious serial killer who died in 1994. “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is currently Netflix’s most-watched title, according to its self-reported data released September 27, amassing more than 196 million viewing hours in the past week. And in case that hasn’t satisfied interest in all things Dahmer, that will be followed Oct. 7 by “Conversations With a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes,” the latest installment in that docuseries franchise, which in the past has featured Ted Bundy and most recently John Wayne Gacy. While “Monster” might have sought to anticipate certain criticisms, that’s one that Netflix – and indeed, the entertainment industry – hasn’t resolved. “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is currently playing on Netflix, and “Conversations With a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes” will premiere Oct. 7.

Gas flames of a cooker are pictured in a private home, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues, in Bad Honnef near Bonn, Germany, March 30, 2022. REUTERS/Wolfgang RattayBERLIN, Sept 20 (Reuters) - It's becoming increasingly clear to the German government that the unstable situation of Germany's biggest gas importers calls for the state's power, guarantees and financial backing, two sources told Reuters on Tuesday, after reports saying Berlin is close to agreeing a takeover of Uniper. The sources said the government's gas levy on consumers must address whether Uniper's current situation could be solved by state funding, as news about the government taking a majority stake raised questions about the need for a levy. Without the measure, average home energy bills were tipped to reach over 3,500 pounds a year in October with forecasts of much higher bills to come. CZECH REPUBLICThe Czech government has agreed to cap electricity and gas prices next year to shield households from soaring prices. ITALYItaly approved an aid package worth some 14 billion euros ($14 billion) in September to shield firms and families from surging energy costs. The measures came on top of some 52 billion euros already budgeted since January to soften the energy crisis in Italy. NORWAYNorway has been subsidising household electricity bills since December and now covers 80% of the portion of power bills above a certain rate.
The walkout by security staff has resulted in a high three-digit number of flight cancellations, German airports association ADV said. Some 160 of them were at Duesseldorf airport, accounting for more than half of the planned 290 departures and arrivals, the airport said. At Cologne/Bonn, 94 out of 136 flights were called off, and Berlin airport's website also showed many cancelled flights. Tuesday's walkout will hit Germany's busiest airport, Frankfurt, which handled around 2.1 million passengers last month. Labour union Verdi is demanding that employers raise the wages of airport security staff by at least 1 euro an hour for the next 12 months and that staff in different parts of Germany earn the same.
Here's what parents of successful kids have in common, according to research. Children with parents who stepped in to provide instructions frequently displayed more difficulty regulating their emotions later, the researchers wrote. "Too much direct engagement can come at a cost to kids' abilities to control their own attention, behavior and emotions. When parents let kids take the lead in their interactions, children practice self-regulation skills and build independence," Obradović wrote in the study. The parents tend to take parental leave.
