VATICAN CITY Associated Press —Pope Francis took the unusual decision Wednesday to expel 10 people – a bishop, priests and laypeople – from a troubled Catholic movement in Peru after a Vatican investigation uncovered “sadistic” abuses of power, authority and spirituality. It was announced by the Peruvian Bishops Conference, which posted a statement from the Vatican embassy on its website. The statement was astonishing because it listed abuses uncovered by the Vatican investigation that have rarely if ever been punished canonically — such as hacking someone’s communications — and cited the people the pope held responsible. Victims of Figari’s abuses complained to the Lima archdiocese in 2011, though other claims against him reportedly date to 2000. The investigation, published in 2017, found that Figari sodomized his recruits and forced them to fondle him and one another.

CNN —After more than five decades at the forefront of United States foreign policy, President Joe Biden may have hoped to use his speech to over a hundred world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York to burnish both his own legacy and the country’s leadership on the world stage. “The world has changed, and the world’s gotten more difficult in many ways,” one senior administration official said. Election loomingIn New York, world leaders will find themselves grappling with the growing list of global flashpoints – all while an election just weeks away looms over the US’ role as the democratic world’s champion, benefactor and leading arms supplier. While Biden will be formally representing the US at the table, former president Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are separately meeting with world leaders to bolster relationships and outline their own goals. This will be followed by a meeting focused on Ukraine reconstruction with world leaders – a critical topic ahead of Biden’s meeting with Zelensky later this week.

☆ A popular China ETF is surging Tuesday. It's not time to jump in just yet, according to the charts

Not surprisingly, the news has given a jolt to the most liquid Chinese ETF today, as well. The iShares China Large Cap ETF (FXI) has been trading even higher than that so far on Tuesday. The ETF was trading considerably higher in pre-market trading hours and opened a whopping 6% higher from the prior day's close. And that's exactly why we need to look beyond the last few months to a get true sense of its trend. And at that point, the ETF would be hitting its highest level since early 2022.

☆ OPEC is highly bullish on long-term oil demand growth. Not everyone agrees

Low global demand forecasts, coupled with new oil supply coming from non-OPEC countries, spell a long period of subdued crude prices. Has demand growth hit its apex, and is it just downhill from here? The oil producer group's 2024 World Oil Outlook report, released Tuesday, predicts strong energy demand growth of 24% globally between now and 2050. It also forecasts "robust medium-term growth" in oil demand reaching 112.3 million barrels per day in 2029, an increase of 10.1 million barrels per day compared to 2023. The IEA still sees global oil demand rising; it just forecasts a smaller rise, and expects it to peak by the end of the decade.

September is a historically weak month for stocks, but the first U.S. Federal Reserve rate cut in four years meant that markets have mostly bucked the trend so far. The S & P 500 has risen around 1% month-to-date, and jumped about 8% since the end of June when stocks went through much volatility. But risks such as the U.S. election, inflation and geopolitical conditions raise the question of what the path ahead will be like for stocks. "In my view, the banking sector could win ... as should solid growth stocks – at reasonable valuations – in the healthcare and software sectors," he added. Valuations in the U.S. market look "less demanding" — if you exclude Big Tech, mega-growth stocks, which are dragging up the overall price-to-earnings multiple of the S & P 500, Webber added.

CNN —Astronomers have observed a massive pair of jets releasing from a supermassive black hole 7.5 billion light-years from Earth. The megastructure spans 23 million light-years in length, making these black hole jets the largest ever seen, according to new research. Black hole jets can accelerate radiation and particles close to the speed of light, causing them to glow in wavelengths visible to radio telescopes. The massive black hole jets could help answer both. Martijn Oei (pictured), lead author of the new study, and his colleagues will continue their search for massive black hole jets.
