A commodity "super squeeze" is denoted by higher prices driven by supply constraints more than a robust growth in demand, he explained. "If it's a supply constraint that's driving high commodity prices, it's a very different story for global growth," he told CNBC via Zoom. Higher prices as a result of a super squeeze are "not as positive." The super squeeze could be deeper, or more prolonged if geopolitical, climate change or energy transition related supply disruptions are larger than expected. He highlighted that extreme weather events and geopolitics have also impacted the agricultural and energy commodity baskets.

This year could be a banner one for dividends, according to Bank of America Securities. For one, high dividend yield tends to lead in recoveries and global wave upturns, she wrote. Dividends also bridge a gap between "muddled macro signals" that impede a full cyclical/small cap recovery as the Federal Reserve pauses and/or cuts rates, Subramanian said. Atlanta Federal Reserve President Raphael Bostic said Thursday he expects policymakers to start cutting rates in the third quarter of 2024. "We expect more cash to revert to equity income as retirees reach for yield as cash yields ebb," Subramanian said.

Copper prices are set to soar more than 75% over the next two years amid mining supply disruptions and higher demand for the metal, fueled by the push for renewable energy. In a December report, the investment bank forecast that the higher renewable energy targets would boost copper demand by extra 4.2 million tons by 2030. This would potentially push copper prices to $15,000 a ton in 2025, the report added, way higher than the record peak of $10,730 per ton scaled in March last year. "This assumes a very soft landing in the U.S. and Europe, an earlier global growth recovery, significant China easing," Citi analysts said, while also emphasizing on continued investments in the energy transition sector. A growing economy tends to boost demand for copper, which is used in electrical equipment and industrial machinery.

The so-called core CPI was also lifted by a 3.7% rise in the cost of lodging away from home, which ended three straight monthly declines. The core CPI gained 4.1% on a year-on-year basis in September, the smallest rise since September 2021, after advancing 4.3% in August. Over the last three months, the core CPI increased 3.1%. Still-strong demand in the economy, marked by labor market tightness, which is driving core services inflation excluding rents, imply that the higher rates could last for some time. Just when Chinese electric car companies may be needing the cash, foreign automakers need the market — not only in China but globally. Volkswagen isn't faring much better in China's electric car market, with an average of just over 10,000 vehicles delivered each month in the first half of the year. China's homegrown electric car brands from BYD to Zeekr have piled into the local market, where Tesla still commands a hefty share. Li Auto was the only one of the three U.S.-listed Chinese electric car companies to have the healthiest reading above 1, according to a Wind Information screen for the first quarter. China's electric car market is set to grow by 27% this year to 8.7 million units — and remain the largest in the world in coming years, according to Bank of America Securities.
