Emily's mother, Andrea Halnon, was also afraid to jump out of a plane, but she "met her fear with joy and determination," her daughter says. The door slid open, the plane was moving 100 miles per hour, and a torrent of wind rushed in. On this big grief day, when I didn’t know how to cope with feeling too far away from my mom, I’d found the answer. I carried every emotion with me as I let go of the plane — fear, joy, grief, longing, love. My eyes were wide open, and I could see I was exactly where I wanted to be.

“I wanted to burn my house down.”Any parent dealing with head lice can probably relate to this situation. Head lice have unfortunately become a part of raising children today, said Deborah Altschuler, president of the National Pediculosis Association. Lauren Salzberg (R), also known as Lice-Lady, treats a customer for head lice in her studio, a converted garage, in Potomac, Maryland, in November 2015. Head lice are most common among young children — 6 million to 12 million lice outbreaks occur yearly in children between 3 and 11 in the US — though adults are vulnerable to head lice as well. The best way to check if a child has lice is with a lice comb, Altschuler said.

New York CNN —Pinterest on Thursday said it has harnessed AI to develop technology that would deliver greater representation of diverse body types in its search results. Using shape, size and form to identify body types in images, the new body-type technology lets people search results that show bodies like their own, including plus sizes, via the algorithm. Instead, a wider variety of body types will show automatically, beginning with initial search results. For example, if a user searches for date night outfit inspiration, they will see results inclusive of various body types and skin tone ranges in those results, the company said. Then in 2021, Pinterest rolled out its hair pattern search feature that refines search results by choosing from six different hair types – protective, straight, wavy, coily, curly and shaved/bald.

If you take all my rules literally, you're going to be running around in circles while tearing your own hair out," Cramer said. One of the first things investors can do to develop good judgment is making sure they know themselves and their objectives, he said. First, though, you need to consider what you're trying to get out of the market, you need to know yourself," Cramer said. "The answer to that question is not going to be the same for everyone, but everything else stems from it. You can't make judgments about stocks until you know what characteristics you actually are seeking and you value."

Johannes Fritz, a maverick Austrian biologist, needed to come up with a plan, again, if he was going to prevent his rare and beloved birds from going extinct. But shifting climate patterns have delayed when the birds begin to migrate, and they are now reaching the mountains too late to make it over the peaks, locking them in an icy death trap. “Two or three years, and they’d be extinct again,” Mr. Fritz said. Determined to save them, Mr. Fritz decided he would teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. And he was confident he could succeed in this daring, unconventional plan — because he had done it before.

CNN —Compulsive nail-biting, skin-picking, hairpulling, and lip- and cheek-biting are among a range of body-focused repetitive behaviors, or BFRBs, that can become a source of distress, but new research may offer hope for relief. Gently tapping the middle and index fingers against the thumb is one of the habit replacement techniques suggested by research. In the study, Moritz recruited 268 people with BFRBs — include participants exhibiting skin-picking, trichotillomania, nail-biting, and lip- and cheek-biting behaviors — who were between ages 18 and 80. After six weeks, 54% of people in the group using the habit replacement techniques reported improvement on a scale devised to measure the severity of body-focused repetitive behavior compared with 20% in the control group. However, she said she thinks habit replacement techniques are just part of a bigger BFRB treatment puzzle.

Bald and boldly suited, he was the architect behind the meteoric success of Gucci, the largest fashion brand in the stable owned by the French group Kering, which also includes Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Saint Laurent. The news was buried in the third paragraph of a memo Kering released that outlined a major organizational shake-up as François-Henri Pinault, the chairman and chief executive, tries to write a new chapter for the fortunes of Gucci and the conglomerate. In the same announcement, Kering said Francesca Bellettini, the chief executive of Yves Saint Laurent, would become the conglomerate’s deputy chief executive for brand development, a promotion that will require all Kering brand chief executives to report to her and make her one of the most powerful women in the luxury industry. Most people come to Ox Ranch — an 18,000-acre property outside Uvalde, Texas — for the thrill of hunting exotic animals in the Hill Country. Mr. LuJan is a commercial paleontologist, bald and often dressed in dinosaur-themed shirts and socks, who collects fossils and assesses their value for private clients. Such arrangements are not unusual in the vast and wealthy state, which is in the middle of a paleontological renaissance. That won’t be the case with Ox Ranch, and Mr. LuJan has bigger ambitions. But Mr. LuJan sees a paleontological void in the state, which has no public museum devoted solely to its fossil treasures.

Researchers hoped to find evidence of a healthy new generation of ospreys when they checked 84 nests of the fish-eating bird in mid-June at Mobjack Bay, an inlet at the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay. It was the lowest reproductive number in more than 50 years of monitoring the local population of the raptor, according to scientists at the College of William & Mary. And they said it represented the latest evidence in a long-term decline in breeding success due to the bay-wide depletion of the bird’s favorite food — Atlantic menhaden. The fish are nutrient-rich, a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids; they consume smaller organisms like plankton and they filter huge quantities of ocean water. But they are also a mainstay of the commercial fishing industry, caught in mass quantities to be processed into bait for crabs and lobsters, and in greater volume for so-called reduction fisheries, in which they are ground up and turned into products including fish oil and fish meal.

A female bald eagle abducted Tuffy, a baby hawk, from his nest and began caring for him as her own. This behavior has only been spotted in the wild four other times, the Los Angeles Times reports. This behavior — strange, according to experts, because eagles prey on hawks — is even more exciting for bird enthusiasts because it has only been seen in the wild four other times, the Los Angeles Times reports. Doug Gillard — former Olympian hammer thrower turned birdwatcher — was the first to spot the strange family in a Bay Area forest, and has nicknamed the baby hawk Tuffy. He now lives with his adoptive parents and their child, whom Gillard nicknamed Lola, according to the Los Angeles Times.

I decided to take a “scent walk” with my best friend, Julie, who lives in Morningside Heights in New York City. Rob Mastrianni, a park ranger in Manhattan, who recommended taking a walk with the express goal of spotting wildlife. If there’s a safe way to take a walk in the rain, wind or fog, “lean into the elements,” said Rob Walker, the author of “The Art of Noticing,” a book about finding opportunities to be amazed in everyday life. Revel in the dramatically shifting landscapes — the drama of wind whipping through the trees, or the way that rain can make greenery look more vivid. “I don’t want to encourage anyone to go kick a football around in a hurricane,” Walker said.

Tesla is the most American car brand
  + stars: | 2023-06-21 | by ( Graham Rapier | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +1 min
Last year, Tesla only claimed the two top spots. Tesla may not have ads featuring American icons like the Wild West, bald eagle, or stars-and-stripes galore, but it's still the most American car brand, at least based on its manufacturing. The survey takes five primary factors into account: final assembly location, origin of parts, origin of engines, origin of transmissions, and manufacturing workforce. To qualify for a $7,500 tax credit, new EVs and their batteries must be mostly assembled in the US — something that's benefitting Tesla greatly so far. Tesla is set to receive billions in other credits, too, thanks to its early investment in manufacturing stateside as other automakers race to catch up.
