Jack Black voices the villainous Bowser in Universal and Illumination's "The Super Mario Bros. "I wonder whether the filmmakers were too timid to draw outside the lines with this copyright protected material, lest they end up with something like the disastrous live-action 1993 movie, 'Super Mario Bros.,'" he said.
The prison in Kira Yarmysh’s “The Incredible Events in Women’s Cell Number 3” is not actually a prison but a detention center, and the women inside are considered offenders rather than criminals. Anya, the novel’s main character, is serving a 10-day sentence after being plucked at random from a crowd of protestors at a Moscow anticorruption rally. The detention center is unpleasant but hardly intolerable, and the cafeteria food is surprisingly tasty. Anya’s working-class bunkmates may share her disgust for the government, but they largely view activism as a bizarre pastime for the privileged. Mostly they’re trying to finagle as many cigarettes and hot showers as possible until the annoying interlude is behind them.
Michelle Yeoh won the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture comedy or musical. Yeoh took home the award Tuesday for her starring role in the psychedelic comedy drama “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”“Whew! In her acceptance speech, Yeoh recounted how she wasn’t always accepted in the industry. “Someone said to me ‘You speak English?’ I mean, forget about them not knowing Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Asia, India. For Yeoh, the film is also significant because of the familiarity of its depiction, albeit a bit unconventional, of the immigrant experience, she said.

Sadly, “The Witcher: Blood Origin,” Netflix’s new spinoff, is a disappointment. Not that the original “Witcher” wholly depended on Cavill as its titular lead. “Blood Origin” is the first live-action spinoff, a prequel deep-dive that chronicles how witchers came to be. Unfortunately, “Blood Origin” doesn’t do much with its excellent pieces. “Blood Origin” just feels like a side quest, something that’s only worthwhile for superfans.
Gen Zers and millennials were more likely to pursue freelance work, it found. The reasons for freelancing vary, but common factors include flexibility and the desire for control. The platform's "Freelance Forward 2022" report, which studied 3,000 professionals, found Gen Z and millennials were the most likely to explore freelancing: In 2022, 46% of millennial professionals and 43% of Gen Z professionals surveyed performed freelance work. Insider spoke with Lilani, two millennial freelancers, and two Gen Z freelancers to learn why the type of work had attracted two generations of young professionals. For instance, Iyana Jones-Reese is a freelance photographer on top of her full-time job, while Levi Newman writes Amazon product descriptions for a living.
CNN —The nominees for the 80th Golden Globe Awards were announced on Monday. Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva, two of the stars from “Lopez vs. Lopez,” announced the range of film and television nominees as selected by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Favored Oscars contender “The Banshees of Inisherin” led the film categories, with nominations including best musical or comedy film. It stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. The ceremony, which was not broadcast last January over controversy surrounding the HFPA, will return to NBC on Jan. 10.
New York CNN —Anya Remy is Christmas shopping for her family on a stricter budget than ever before. The new horror-comedy “The Menu,” uses that allure to trap privileged diners at a high-end banquet, the actor John Leguizamo said in an interview with NBC News. “I loved the clever writing, the beautiful poetry about food, and then obviously the beautiful execution of the food,” he said. Beyond these ruling class stereotypes, however, Leguizamo said he’s proud that “The Menu” puts the spotlight on Latino actors in a different way. Outside of the film, food is nurturing and empowering, Leguizamo said. Lately Leguizamo has been busy traveling across the country and doing a deep dive into the culture — including the iconic foods and restaurants — of several U.S. cities as part of his upcoming documentary series, "Leguizamo Does America."
CNN —Anya Taylor-Joy is staying busy. “The Queen’s Gambit” star appears in the prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road,” called “Furiosa,” and can be seen in “The Menu” alongside Nicholas Hoult. Taylor-Joy says she’s getting lots of offers but is selective about what she chooses. [‘Furiosa’] was the most life-changing experience that I’ve ever had, with such talented artists. Taylor-Joy stars in the film alongside Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke and Nathan Jones.
KHERSON, Ukraine, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Under rainy skies, Ukrainian-controlled Kherson's central square was a frenetic melee on Thursday afternoon of humanitarian aid queues and displays of patriotic celebration tinged with uncertainty about the future. Hundreds of people stood in a queue for humanitarian assistance, but said they had no idea what they might receive. CNN —Chris Hemsworth embarked on a personal and physically demanding journey for his new series “Limitless” that ultimately led to a sobering discovery. Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death in the hope that we’ll somehow avoid it,” he told Vanity Fair. “I think that’s my favorite episode. “Doing an episode on death and facing your own mortality made me go, ‘Oh God, I’m not ready to go yet,’” he later added. “I want to sit and be in this space with a greater sense of stillness and gratitude.
[1/2] Cast member Ralph Fiennes arrives at the world premiere for the film 'The King's Man' at Leicester Square in London, Britain December 6, 2021. The two are part of a select group of 12 who have paid a small fortune to dine at the restaurant run by the celebrated American chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes). Unbeknownst to his wealthy guests, Slowik and his team of robot-like professionals have planned a one-off menu with some unexpected ingredients especially for them. "This story for me is about privilege for privileges' sake or pretentiousness for pretentiousness' sake," Taylor-Joy told Reuters at the film's London premiere on Wednesday. "If you're not enjoying yourself and if you're not enjoying life, then what are you really doing?

Courtesy of Anya HindmarchHindmarch's short-lived project is just the latest sign of the opportunities available in the upscale pet market, especially for dog owners. In summer 2021, Versace expanded its homeware collection to cater to pets, no doubt inspired by Donatella's own Jack Russell, Audrey. Heather GildroyPagerie, a luxury pet brand that just launched a collection aimed as much at humans as at dogs, hopes this will be the case.
More than 100 N26 bank customers, including a Ukrainian refugee, say their accounts were suddenly terminated in April. The online bank confirmed accounts were "wrongly closed" but said it is working to roll out a technical solution. Customers shared their distress online after N26 shut their accounts on April 14 as part of anti-fraud measures that went wrong. The N26 customers that Insider spoke to were spread across Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Ireland, Latvia, and Romania. Online banks are under pressure to make judgment calls and have to tread a fine line," Prince said.
Reports from the Associated Press and The New York Times highlight deportations of Ukrainian children. Anya is just one example among recent reports on Russia's efforts to adopt Ukrainian children and raise them as Russian. Ukrainian officials as early as April said Russian forces were "forcibly deporting" kids and fast-tracking adoptions. US officials in September said Russian authorities had overseen the deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children to Russia, adding the "efforts specifically include the forced adoption of Ukrainian children into Russian families" and "the so-called 'patriotic education' of Ukrainian children." US officials also said the efforts involved legislation aimed at expediting the process of granting Russian citizenship to Ukrainian kids and the "deliberate removal of Ukrainian children by Russia's forces."

CNN —The curse of “Stranger Things” means every sci-fi/macabre concept involving teenagers will seemingly have its day on TV, with “The Midnight Club” as the latest example. The diverse makeup of the key group and approach to things like LGBTQ rights give “Midnight Club” a contemporary feel, despite its foundation in the past. As for the broader secrets, “Midnight Club” is in no hurry to disgorge those, perhaps hoping curiosity will pull viewers into a second season. Stranger things have happened, but if not, this could be the latest series in this genre that struggles to keep the midnight oil burning. “The Midnight Club” premieres October 7 on Netflix.
CNN —“Amsterdam” certainly doesn’t suffer from a lack of ambition, and the star-studded cast merely adds to that sense of grandeur. Burt (Christian Bale), a part-Jewish Park Avenue doctor whose in-laws disapprove of him, and Harold (John David Washington) bonded while serving together during World War I, where they met up with a free-spirited nurse, Valerie (Margot Robbie) who fell for Harold, forging a seemingly inseparable trio. Recovering from their war injuries, they took refuge in Amsterdam, a place where the world’s concerns – including those involving race – appeared to shrink away. Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington in 'Amsterdam.' “This is so strange,” Burt mutters at one point, which turns out to be an inadvertent commentary on the film itself.
CNN —Video game purists expecting a faithful adaptation of the original Nintendo game might be somewhat surprised by first teaser for the new “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which debuted on Thursday. This is also when the game’s memorable music is finally heard, albeit briefly. The CGI-animated film, from Nintendo and Illumination, features several other big name stars, including Charlie Day as Mario’s brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The last time the iconic video game was translated into a feature-length studio film was almost 30 years ago, with the ill-begotten 1993 release of the live-action “Super Mario Bros.,” starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. The new movie is due to hit theaters on April 7, 2023.
LOS ANGELES, Oct 5 (Reuters) - In the new movie "Amsterdam," Christian Bale, John David Washington and Margot Robbie play friends who are reunited years later and accused of murder. The film from Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell, which debuts in theaters on Friday, is inspired by the real-life story of a little-known plot to overthrow U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s. Bale and Washington play wounded World War One soldiers who celebrated their postwar life in Amsterdam with their nurse, played by Margot Robbie. Director David O. Russell with cast members Rami Malek, Andrea Riseborough, Margot Robbie and Christian Bale attend the European premiere of the film "Amsterdam", in London, Britain September 21, 2022. De Niro said he believed the film had resonance with the current U.S. political climate.
