Apfel died on Friday at the age of 102, according to a post on her verified Instagram page. “I go at it full, I’m very passionate about what I do,” Apfel told CNN in an interview in 2018. Jemal Countess/WireImage/Getty Images“(Styling the White House) was a relatively easy job actually, because everything had to be as close as humanly possible to the way it was,” Apfel told the Guardian in 2015. The exhibition, “Rara Avis (Rare Bird),” was the first time the museum had paid tribute to a living woman who was not a fashion designer. Gold-leafed books with engravings, 200-year-old leather-bound books, books so rare and precious they are wrapped carefully in cellophane before being nestled into place inside an antique wooden box set on the Seine’s stony shoulder for students, intellectuals, power brokers and tourists to browse. For centuries, the wooden bookstalls have been a fixture in the heart of Paris, and so when the city’s police, citing security concerns, ordered them closed during this summer’s Olympic Games, an uproar ensued. Now President Emmanuel Macron has stepped in. In a decision that resounded across the city this week, Mr. Maron deemed the booksellers “a living heritage of the capital” and said they could stay. It began with a citation from Albert Camus: “Everything that degrades culture shortens the paths that lead to servitude.”

Lost Images Reveal the History of Rio’s CarnivalRafael Cosme was at a Rio de Janeiro antique fair six years ago when he found a pile of film negatives on the ground. It is Rio’s annual collective exhalation — a four-day eruption of art and music, costumes and joy — that began again on Saturday. “I realized there are endless stories I could tell about this city,” Mr. Cosme said about his discovery of Rio’s lost photos. Around that time, Rio’s rich elites began parading around the city during Carnival in open cars, according to Maria Clementina Pereira Cunha, a historian who has written books about Rio’s Carnival. Today the parade remains the centerpiece of Rio’s Carnival, held in a dedicated stadium built in 1984.

Julia Lippman and Mathew Eapen love antique homes, but they’re not typical old-house enthusiasts — or purists when it comes to decorating. “I love old houses, the quirks and the tall ceilings,” Ms. Lippman, 37, said. But “I did not want a house full of really big, dark antiques.”The couple, who are both lawyers, were living in an apartment in downtown Boston with their dog, Scout, when Ms. Lippman became pregnant with their first child, Sammy, now 4. They needed more space, and they knew where they wanted to move: Salem, Mass., the small city north of Boston known for its 1692 witch trials.

The Queen Anne-style property was in disrepair, but even with paint peeling off its exterior, Heemstra could see its potential. She has to use different types of paint scrapers and even dental tools on some of the exterior details. Sometimes Heemstra even had to resort to using dental tools to scrape the old paint off. That would've meant that Heemstra completed the restoration project within a year of buying the home.

WHY WE’RE HEREWe’re exploring how America defines itself one place at a time. In towns across New England, antique canes or their replicas are bestowed on the oldest residents. Jan. 20, 2024For more than a century, when selectmen in Rye, N.H., honored the town’s oldest resident, the title came with a distinctive trophy: a gold-topped, ebony walking cane, engraved with the town’s name, that was theirs to keep for as long as they might live. But when the town feted its latest honorees in November — Marion Cronin and Barbara Long, born on the same day in 1921 — that cane was nowhere in sight. Instead, town officials presented a less fancy replica; the original was safely locked up in the town museum.

CNN: Why are high lead levels so dangerous, and why is it that children are most at risk for lead poisoning? This screening is essential, given the adverse outcomes of lead poisoning and because high lead levels are often asymptomatic. There are some therapies that exist for acute lead poisoning if a child has ingested a large quantity of lead-containing substances. A major source of lead exposure is through lead paint. Lead poisoning is a preventable tragedy, and we can all take steps to reduce its harm.

The Latest Trend in Luxury Hotels? No More Lobbies
  + stars: | 2023-12-01 | by ( Jordi Lippe-Mcgraw | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
HISTORICALLY, lavish lobbies telegraphed luxury to hotel guests in bold type. Consider the Four Seasons George V in Paris, a circa-1928 slice of the good life. Adorned with dinosaur-size chandeliers, 12,000-bloom floral arrangements and antique Flemish tapestries, its opulent entrance has long epitomized globe-trotting grandeur. Lately, however, travelers are striding into high-end hotels to find…no lobby at all. These properties claim that jettisoning the grand entrance and front desk provides a more personal sense of “coming home.” But is the trend genuinely luxe or just stingy minimalism masquerading as “elegance”?

Boris later traveled to Japan to be ordained as a Buddhist priest and returned to practice his adopted religion in Manhattan. Mr. Erwitt credited “shyness” — he had arrived in New York speaking no English — with making him a photographer. He began seriously taking pictures in Los Angeles with an antique glass-plate camera when he was 16, then upgraded to a Rolleiflex. The unheroic and the offbeat had already become signature motifs for Mr. Erwitt. He made his first dog-related pictures in 1946, for a fashion story about women’s shoes for The New York Times Magazine.

CNN —A haul of Ukrainian treasures sent to Europe for an exhibition nearly 10 years ago have been returned to Kyiv from the Netherlands after a lengthy legal battle. The collection of ancient artifacts was dispatched to the Netherlands from four museums in Crimea before Russia’s annexation of the region in 2014. The collection comprised 565 items, including antique sculptures, Scythian and Sarmatian jewelry, and Chinese lacquer boxes that are 2,000 years old, the museum said. “The exhibition in the Netherlands was showing the history of Ukrainian Crimea, therefore it is exclusively the people of Ukraine who should possess these treasures,” he added. Ultimately, the Supreme Court of the Netherlands ruled on June 9 of this year that the collection should be returned to Kyiv.
