Read previewRussia and Ukraine have relied heavily on electronic warfare tactics throughout the conflict, leaning on cheap — but highly effective — technology to interfere with the targeting process of precision strike weapons like attack drones and guided munitions. With the battlefield full of such threats, especially the drones that threaten anything that moves, the need for electronic warfare systems is tremendous. "Different EW tools are needed to conduct strategic missions, but there is also a huge need for so-called 'close-range' EW," Fedorov said. Related storiesClose-range electronic-warfare systems would be particularly useful against enemy drones, specifically the small quadcopters that conduct reconnaissance and strike missions. Louis-Dreyfus, known for her work on shows like "Saturday Night Live," "Seinfeld," and "Veep," was asked to weigh in after fellow comedian and former costar Jerry Seinfeld's recent comments about political correctness in comedy made headlines. "When I hear people starting to complain about political correctness — and I understand why people might push back on it — but to me that's a red flag, because it sometimes means something else," she said. "My feeling about all of it is that political correctness, insofar as it equates to tolerance, is obviously fantastic," the Emmy-winning actor said. CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. The conversation I moderated was on "Big (Geospatial) Data & AI," with the goal of exploring how the two rapidly evolving worlds of satellite data collection and artificial intelligence interact. Simply put, Project Maven at NGA is working on how AI can use satellite imagery and data to detect objects and activities around the world. "As the volume of that data grows, it is beyond the capacity of the human mind to be able to derive any kind of useful understanding from that kind of data," Martin said. And more change is coming: The next step in the evolution of geospatial data and AI, from her view, is applying generative AI "to basically arm non-experts with the ability to expertly use geospatial data."

If you subscribe to Netflix's cheapest plan, and also get Peacock's cheapest plan, and also get Apple TV+, it will cost you $23 a month. So Peacock and Apple would benefit more from being in a bundle with Netflix, so they are more likely to discount their rates to make the bundle work. Digital distributors like Apple have made it very easy for subscribers to turn their streaming subscriptions on and off. Netflix, Comcast, and Apple all declined to comment about bundle economics. Musk's Starlink satellites disrupted by major solar storm
  + stars: | 2024-05-11 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Starlink, the satellite arm of Elon Musk's SpaceX, warned on Saturday of a "degraded service" as the Earth is battered by the biggest geomagnetic storm due to solar activity in two decades. Starlink owns around 60% of the roughly 7,500 satellites orbiting Earth and is a dominant player in satellite internet. Musk said earlier in a post on X that Starlink satellites were under a lot of pressure due to the geomagnetic storm, but were holding up so far. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has said the storm is the biggest since October 2003 and likely to persist over the weekend, posing risks to navigation systems, power grids, and satellite navigation, among other services. The thousands of Starlink satellites in low-Earth orbit use inter-satellite laser links to pass data between one another in space at the speed of light, allowing the network to offer internet coverage around the world.

By investigating the readout, the team determined the cause of the issue: 3% of the flight data system’s memory is corrupted. Members of the Voyager flight team celebrate after receiving the first coherent data from Voyager 1 in five months at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory on April 20. And younger engineers are coming onto the Voyager team and contributing their knowledge to keep the mission going.”

Entertainment companies face a generation problem, with Gen Z shunning TV shows and movies over social video and livestreams. A new startup is pitching a solution by bringing TV to Gen Z where and how they already watch, rather than trying to train them in a new habit. The company, Gaggl TV, licenses TV shows and distributes them to creators to watch with their followers on social platforms. In a deal with Fremantle, Gaggl got the rights to old TV shows like '70s-era "The Price is Right: The Barker Era" and is distributing them to five Twitch streamers. "TV companies just put stuff on Twitch and don't realize it's the creators people are coming to see," Harris said.

Earnings season kicks off next week with quarterly updates from Delta Air Lines, Citigroup, BlackRock, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo. For the millions of recent Latino immigrants in the US, construction jobs have low barriers to entry and the openings are plentiful. New York CNN —Disney is curbing password sharing for its Disney+ streaming service as part of a larger effort to boost signups and revenue. CEO Bob Iger, in a CNBC interview on Thursday, said its popular Disney+ streaming service will start cracking down on password sharing in June in some countries and more broadly in September. Although Disney+ and Disney’s other streaming services’ terms of service explicitly prevent customers from impersonating someone else by using their username or password, it hasn’t been broadly enforcing its policy. The crackdown comes as its rival Netflix has attributed a jump in signups from its recent crackdown on password sharing. The password crackdown had been expected for months.

Why NBC could be a perfect fit for the NBABarring a major upset, ESPN and WBD will continue to broadcast NBA games. The network used to broadcast NBA games nationally starting in 1954, and Comcast still shows games on its regional-sports networks in five markets. Comcast-subsidiary Sky Sports also aired NBA games in the United Kingdom for four years starting in 2019. Moffett, the media analyst and MoffettNathanson cofounder, told BI he sees NBC entering the bidding war for NBA media rights if only to assist its streamer. And most important of all, how does a toilet work at 40,000 feet? Matthias Balk/dpa/picture alliance/Getty ImagesUsing water to flush airplane toilets is a no go because of aircraft weight restrictions. When you press the flush button, a valve opens at the bottom of the toilet bowl, connecting it to a pipe below. Airplanes have never deliberately shot their toilet waste into the atmosphere, not even in the old days, says Jones.
