(Minerva, $18.99, ages 4 to 8.) THE WALKING SCHOOL BUS, by Aaron Friedland and Ndileka Mandela. A beguiling, anxious ragamuffin whose parents’ nomadic lifestyle lands her at a school where everyone else speaks French learns that imagination can heal. At recess she draws a “giant magic hopscotch,” and the hopscotch draws new friends.

Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" is about the Manhattan Project, and features an atomic bomb test. By using chemicals and layering clips while editing, they made a realistic atomic explosion. For Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster, which follows the development and aftermath of the atomic bomb by following its creator, Robert J. ‘I feel really lucky to be able to go to a school that has such a large community and population that is not white. Within my little art bubble that we have in the fine arts, I feel like I do belong. There is a sense of community and strength among P.O.C. and queer people. But once I leave the college and go beyond that, it feels a little more hostile towards marginalized groups.’Andrew Jogi, recent graduate

But learning the facts - that affirmative action is critical for fostering equal access and opportunity in our academic institutions -cemented my belief that affirmative action is necessary if we want to create an equitable nation. The court’s decision Thursday is consistent with its view that race-based preferences should and would have a limited shelf life. Jon Wang, who revealed himself as a plaintiff in this Supreme Court case, was rejected by Harvard but was accepted at and is now attending Georgia Tech. Affirmative action enabled my ability to experience different ways of thinking and to form the lasting friendships I have made. Affirmative action has been a tool used by many countries to ensure underrepresented communities are included in areas they normally are not.

After the coronation, the cross will be shared between the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches in Wales. "We are delighted too that its first use will be to guide their majesties into Westminster Abbey at the Coronation Service."
Over the next two centuries, the role gained significant power within the federal government. In 1828, President Andrew Jackson made it part of the Cabinet, placing the role in line for succession. This continued until President Richard Nixon halted such efforts in 1969.

LONDON, April 4 (Reuters) - King Charles's grandson Prince George and the grandchildren of the Queen Consort Camilla will play major roles in the coronation of the British monarch next month, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Tuesday. George, 9, the eldest son of heir to the throne Prince William, will be one of the king's four pages of honour who will accompany him at the grand ceremony on May 6, and join the procession through the nave of London's Westminster Abbey. Camilla's four pages will be made up of her grandchildren Freddy Parker Bowles, and Gus and Louis Lopes, as well as her great-nephew Arthur Elliot. British newspapers had previously reported that the queen consort wanted her grandchildren to play significant roles, even though their parents are the children from her marriage to her first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles.
The Higgins boat is one of the iconic vessels of World War II. Andrew Higgins, center, developed several kinds of landing craft that were invaluable during World War II. His landing craft were used in every major amphibious assault of World War II, from the shores of Europe to the Pacific islands. In one instance, Navy officials expressed interest in seeing a design for a new 56-foot tank landing craft three days before a scheduled visit to see another type of landing craft.
Trump recently announced a plan to build up to 10 new American cities on federal land. But some right-wing critics have attacked it as a "leftist plan" to create walkable "15-minute cities." Fox News left its in-house comedian, Greg Gutfeld, to handle the coverage of Freedom Cities. A conservative member of the UK parliament recently called 15-minute cities an "international socialist concept" that "would take away your personal freedoms." But Freedom Cities don't sound like 15-minute cities at all.

China’s population has begun to decline, a demographic turning point for the country that has global implications. Experts had long anticipated this moment, but it arrived in 2022 several years earlier than expected, prompting hand-wringing among economists over the long-term impacts given the country’s immense economic heft and its role as the world’s manufacturer. With 850,000 fewer births than deaths last year, at least according to the country’s official report, China joined an expanding set of nations with shrinking populations caused by years of falling fertility and often little or even negative net migration, a group that includes Italy, Greece and Russia, along with swaths of Eastern and Southern Europe and several Asian nations like South Korea and Japan.

Amazon laid off a total of 18,000 employees over the past couple of months, more than expected based on reports. She said the process felt "extremely robotic" and wished the company had been more transparent about its plans. This whole process has been extremely frustrating because of the lack of transparency we were provided. I know Amazon is a giant company, and I know the logistics of a more personalized approach would have been a nightmare, but on the other hand, we are human beings. The lack of transparency made it feel like I was just a line item instead of a human being.

His pay has been out of this world, but then so has the iPhone maker’s share price performance. Nonetheless Apple, its investors and its board have agreed Cook’s pay should orbit closer to Earth in 2023. On Friday, Apple said Cook’s targeted pay will fall to $49 million. Apple says it will target his pay between 80th and 90th percentile among peers in future years. A bigger improvement is making Cook’s pay less of a giveaway.

Many of the worst performing stocks of last year are poised to start off 2023 on the right foot as Wall Street looks to rebound. Major stocks that were down more than 50% or more were nearly all moving higher in premarket trading on Tuesday. The electric vehicle stock, which fell almost 70% last year, was down another 3.8% in premarket trading. Tesla fell below $119 per share in premarket trading. To be sure, premarket trading of stocks tends to be thin, and Tuesday's moves could reverse once the market opens.

1868 — US President Andrew Johnson pardons former Confederate soldiersPresident Andrew Johnson Pardoning Rebels at the White House en.wikipedia.orgNearly a century later, on Christmas Day 1868, US President Andrew Johnson extended a full pardon and amnesty "to all and to every person who, directly or indirectly, participated in the late insurrection or rebellion." At war's end, however, he seemed to determine to punish those who had rebelled to preserve the institution of slavery. The day after being sworn in as the nation's president, Johnson said that "treason must be made infamous, and traitors must be impoverished." Prior to this blanket Christmas Day amnesty, southerners who had fought for the Confederacy could obtain a pardon provided only that they swore allegiance to the Union (top officials were excluded). Under "Proclamation 179," pardons were extended "to every person who, directly or indirectly, participated in the late insurrection."

New York CNN —FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was indicted on eight criminal charges including wire fraud and conspiracy by misusing customer funds, according to an indictment from the US Attorney of the Southern District of New York. Separately Tuesday, US markets regulators charged Bankman-Fried with defrauding investors and customers in his failed crypto exchange FTX. The Securities and Exchange Commission said Bankman-Fried, “orchestrated a years-long fraud” to conceal from FTX investors the diversion of customer funds to Alameda Research, his crypto-trading hedge fund. Star athletes and celebrities who backed FTX also reportedly received a stake in the company, including Tom Brady and Gisele. That meant there was no meaningful distinction between FTX customer funds and Alameda’s funds that Bankman-Fried used as his “personal piggy bank,” the complaint says.
